Balloon-Assisted Coil Embolization and Balloon Angioplasty for Post Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Vasospasm: Initial Experience with Scepter Mini Balloon

        Ioannidis Ioannis,Adamou Antonis,Nasis Nikolaos,Vlychou Marianna,Poullos Nektarios 대한신경중재치료의학회 2022 Neurointervention Vol.17 No.2

The scope of this technical note is to report our experience with balloon remodeling for wideneck aneurysms and balloon angioplasty of post-subarachnoid hemorrhage vasospasm using the novel Scepter Mini balloon (SMB). Five cases were treated with balloon remodeling for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, 2 of which were additionally treated with angioplasty due to post-bleeding vasospasm. All patients had their aneurysm located on parent vessels with a diameter smaller than 2 mm. Complete occlusion was noted in all aneurysms, and the patients had no short-term complications attributed to the catheterization. Additionally, we confirm the previously reported smooth navigation of the balloon through vessels with tortuous anatomy without catheter-induced vasospasm. Based on our experience, the SMB can be a safe and efficient device for applying the balloon remodeling technique for distally located wide-neck aneurysms and distal balloon angioplasty.

Insect symbionts and applications: The paradigm of cytoplasmic incompatibility-inducing Wolbachia

        Panagiotis IOANNIDIS,Kostas BOURTZIS 한국곤충학회 2007 Entomological Research Vol.37 No.3

Wolbachia is a group of Gram-negative, obligatory intracellular and maternally transmitted alpha-Proteobacteria. They have been reported to establish symbiotic relationships with a great variety of species of the most diverse animal class, the insects, as well as with several other arthropods and with filarial nematodes. The reproductive alterations Wolbachia causes in its hosts account for its widespreaddistribution. These alterations include parthenogenesis, feminization, male killing, and cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI). CI is the most frequent and best studied effect Wolbachia has on its hosts. CI is a form of male sterility, ultimately resulting in embryo lethality in diplodiploid host species. As a consequence of CI, Wolbachia infections spread and lead to the replacement of uninfected populations. CI was used nearly four decades ago to control important disease vectors with very encouraging results, and a number of more recent studies have confirmed the effectiveness of CI as a pest population suppression tool as well as a driving mechanism. Furthermore, recent advancements in the field encourage the development of Wolbachia-based methods for the biological control of insect pests and disease vectors of agricultural, environmental and medical importance.

The roles of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio and uric acid as predisposing factors for metabolic syndrome in healthy children

        Maria Efthymia Katsa,Anastasios Ioannidis,Athanasios Sachlas,Ioannis Dimopoulos,Stylianos Chatzipanagiotou,Andrea Paola Rojas Gil 대한소아내분비학회 2019 Annals of Pediatirc Endocrinology & Metabolism Vol.24 No.3

Purpose: To estimate the roles of triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL) ratio and uric acid in predisposition for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components in healthy children. Methods: Anthropometric and biochemical analyses were performed on 110 children, aged 5 to 12 years, from the Greek county of Laconia. The children were studied as a whole population and in separate groups according to age and predisposition to MetS after taking into consideration International Diabetes Federation criteria, body mass index, and lipid profile. Results: Seventeen percent of children exhibited predisposition to MetS, while 39.1% had TG/HDL ratio >1, and 3.64% had high level of uric acid. According to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the relative probability for MetS predisposition sextupled when TG/HDL ratio was ≥1 (odds ratio [OR], 5.986; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.968–18.205). Children in the total population and those aged < 9 years had a greater probability for increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (OR, 3.614; 95% CI, 1.561–8.365) when TG/HDL ratio was ≥ 1. The TG/HDL ratio was positively correlated with body mass index (BMI) (P=0.035) in children without MetS, cholesterol in the total population (P=0.06) and children ≥9 years old (P=0.026), and with LDL in the total population and both age groups (P=0.001). The TG/HDL ratio was also positively correlated with alanine aminotransferase in the total population (P=0.033) and gamma-glutamyl transferase in most studied groups (P<0.001). Uric acid was positively correlated with waist circumference in the total population (P=0.043) and in those without MetS (P=0.027). It was also positively correlated with BMI, TG, cholesterol, and TG/HDL ratio and negatively correlated with HDL in most studied groups (P<0.005). Conclusion: The studied parameters correlated with MetS components and could be characterized as effective indexes for childhood MetS, regardless of age and predisposition to MetS.

Deflection of Castellated I-Beams under Transverse Loading

        Ioannis G. Raftoyiannis,George I. Ioannidis 한국강구조학회 2006 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.6 No.3

The fatigue behaviour of thin-walled CHS-to-SHS T-joints (t < 4 m) under in-plane bending are studied in this paper. Thefailure modes observed in the fatigue tests are described. Surface crack growth was recorded at progressive stages of fatiguelife, from initiation, through-thickness life and end of test failure. The characteristics of fatigue crack initiation and propagationare described. The stress concentration factors (SCFs) along the weld toes at both the circular brace and the square chord are-dimensional joint parameters on SCFs are discussed. The resultant SCFs are compared to both the SCFs from CHS and RHSparametric formulae in IIW guidelines. Both the fatigue tests and FE analyses showed that the hot spot locations of the CHS-to-SHS T-joints were located at the weld toe of the square hollow section chord.

Chemical functionalization and stabilization of type I collagen with organic tanning agents

        Madalina Georgiana Albu,Viorica Deselnicu,Ioannis Ioannidis,Dana Deselnicu,Ciprian Chelaru 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.2

We investigated the interactions between selected organic tanning agents and type I fibrillar collagen as amodel fibrillar substrate to enable the fast direct evaluation and validation of interpretations of tanning activity. Type Ifibrillar collagen (1%) as gel was used as substrate of tanning and tannic acid, resorcinol- and melamine-formaldehydeand their combination at three concentrations as crosslinking agents (tannins). To evaluate the stability of collagenduring tanning, the crosslinked gels at 2.8, 4.5 and 9.0 pHs were freeze-dried as discs which were characterized by FTIR,shrinkage temperature, enzymatic degradation and optical microscopy, and the results were validated by statisticalanalyses. The best stability was given by combinations between resorcinol- and melamine-formaldehyde at isoelectricpH.

Comparison Between Ambulatory and Conventional Urodynamics of the Modified Orthotopic Hautmann Neobladder

        Malioris Apostolos,Dimitriadis Georgios,Kampantais Spyridon,Gkotsos Georgios,Vakalopoulos Ioannis,Ioannidis Stavros,Hatzimoutatidis Konstantinos,Hatzichristou Dimitrios 대한배뇨장애요실금학회 2015 International Neurourology Journal Vol.19 No.4

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the diagnostic accuracy of conventional and ambulatory urodynamic studies (UDS) in estimating neobladder function. Methods: We evaluated 32 patients who underwent radical cystectomy and orthotopic Hautmann W neobladder with Abol- Enein-Ghoneim uretero-intestinal anastomosis for bladder cancer. The patients were initially examined by using both conventional and ambulatory UDS. Results: Conventional UDS detected a very high mean intravesical pressure at maximum capacity (53.7±17.5 cm H2O). By contrast, the mean intravesical pressure detected by using ambulatory UDS (which reflects the dominant pattern of pressure variation during filling) was significantly lower (34.4±5.2 cm H2O, P<0.001). The comparison between intravesical pressure at half of maximum capacity in conventional UDS and the mean value in ambulatory UDS did not show significant difference (P=0.152). The mean voided volume in conventional UDS was greater than both the mean voided volume (P<0.001) and the mean maximum voided volume in ambulatory UDS (P=0.001). However, this difference did not affect the postvoid residual urine volume measured in both studies (P=0.207). Moreover, incontinence episodes recorded in ambulatory UDS were more frequent but not statistically significantly different from those recorded in conventional UDS (P=0.332). Conclusions: The estimation of neobladder function by means of ambulatory UDS seems to provide interesting research data for the mode of lower urinary tract function in patients with orthotopic substitution after radical cystectomy. The great high value in ambulatory UDS, in cases in which conventional UDS had failed, is due to the exposure of daily and nocturnal incontinence episodes, confirming our patients’ complaints.

Fascial entrapment of the sural nerve and its clinical relevance

        George K Paraskevas,Konstantinos Natsis,Maria Tzika,Orestis Ioannidis 대한해부학회 2014 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.47 No.2

Sural nerve presents great topographic variability and it is responsible for sensory innervation of the posterolateral side of the distal third of the leg and lateral aspect of the foot. Entrapment of the nerve could be caused by compression due to fascial thickening, while the symptomatology includes sensory alterations and deficits at the nerve distribution area. We report a cadaveric case of a variant sural nerve that presented a distinct entrapment site. A supernumerary sensory branch was encountered originating from the common peroneal nerve, while the peroneal component of the sural nerve was observed to take a course within a fibrous fascial tunnel 3.1 cm in length that caused nerve fixation and flattening. The tension applied to the aforementioned branch was shown to worsen during passive forcible foot plantaflexion and inversion. The etiology, diagnosis and the treatment options are discussed comprehensively.

Causes for Retraction in the Biomedical Literature: A Systematic Review of Studies of Retraction Notices

        Hwang Soo Young,Yon Dong Keon,Lee Seung Won,Kim Min Seo,Kim Jong Yeob,Smith Lee,Koyanagi Ai,Solmi Marco,Carvalho Andre F,Kim Eunyoung,Shin Jae Il,Ioannidis John P A 대한의학회 2023 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.38 No.41

Background: Many studies have evaluated the prevalence of different reasons for retraction in samples of retraction notices. We aimed to perform a systematic review of such empirical studies of retraction causes. Methods: The PubMed/MEDLINE database and the Embase database were searched in June 2023. Eligible studies were those containing sufficient data on the reasons for retraction across samples of examined retracted notices. Results: A 11,181 potentially eligible items were identified, and 43 studies of retractions were included in this systematic review. Studies limited to retraction notices of a specific subspecialty or country, journal/publication type are emerging since 2015. We noticed that the reasons for retraction are becoming more specific and more diverse. In a meta-analysis of 17 studies focused on different subspecialties, misconduct was responsible for 60% (95% confidence interval [CI], 53–67%) of all retractions while error and publication issues contributed to 17% (95% CI, 12–22%) and 9% (95% CI, 6–13%), respectively. The end year of the retraction period in all included studies and the proportion of misconduct presented a weak positive association (coefficient = 1.3% per year, P = 0.002). Conclusion: Misconduct seems to be the most frequently recorded reason for retraction across empirical analyses of retraction notices, but other reasons are not negligible. Greater specificity of causes and standardization is needed in retraction notices.
