This study is carried out to investigate the water quality changes in Busan Metropolitan streams. The results are as follows. In Busan Metropolitan streams, the loading rates of contaminants are greater in industrial waste water streams than domestic waste water streams. Some sampling points show a little high loading in autumn, but this needs more investigation to make clear the causes. The level of organic contaminants(BOD_(5) and COD_(MN)) is found to be low and does not show seasonal variation in domestic waste water streams. But, the level of organic contaminants in industrial waste water streams is relatively high and seems to be seasonally variable, which is affected by other factors. The nutrient materials, such as nitrogen(as T-N, about 20mg/L) and phosphorus(as T-P, about 2.0mg/L), are abundant than Nak Dong River and the general trends of contaminants level are similar to those of organic contaminants.

Signaling pathways activated by leptin in metabolically important organs have largely been studied only in animal and/or cell culture studies. In this study, we examined whether leptin has similar effects in human peripheral tissues in vivo, ex vivo, and in vitro and whether the response would be different in lean and obese humans. For in vivo leptin signaling, metreleptin was administered and muscle, adipose tissue, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells were taken for analysis of signal activation. Experiments were also done ex vivo and with primary cultured cells in vitro. The signal activation was compared between male versus female and obese versus lean humans. Acute in vivo, ex vivo, and/or in vitro metreleptin administration similarly activated STAT3, AMPK, ERK1/2, Akt, mTOR, NF-κB, and/or IKKα/β without any differences between male versus female and obese versus lean subjects. All signaling pathways were saturable at ~30-50 ng/mL, consistent with the clinical evidence showing no additional effect(s) in obese subjects who already have high levels of leptin. Our data provide novel information on downstream effectors of metreleptin action in humans that may have therapeutic implications.

<P>Renal fibrosis is characterized by the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins such as type I collagen, fibronectin, and by the increased expression of PAI-1. This study evaluated the anti-fibrotic effect of bee venom and its major compounds (melittin and apamin) on TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic gene expression. Bee venom and melittin significantly suppressed type I collagen, fibronectin, and PAI-1 protein expression in the TGF-β-treated kidney fibroblast. However, apamin only inhibited the expression of fibronectin and type I collagen. These results indicated that the inhibitory effects of bee venom on TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic gene expression are caused by melittin. Moreover, we attempted to elucidate mechanisms underlying the anti-fibrotic effect of melittin. Melittin dramatically inhibited the phosphorylation of TGFβRII and Smad2/3. Also, melittin inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and JNK, but not the phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt, and p38. These results suggested that melittin inhibits TGF-β-induced pro-fibrotic genes expression through the suppression of TGFβR-Smad2/3, ERK1/2, and JNK phosphorylation, and melittin can be used as a clinical drug for the treatment of fibrosis associated with renal diseases.</P>
A case of lupus vulgaris with negative PCR and acid-fast bacilli staining

A 72-year-old female patient presented with a 2.0~5.0 cm-sized, irregularly shaped, scaly, pink, firm plaque with well-defined borders on the right mandibular area for 20 years. On diascopy, the infiltrate exhibited a typical apple-jelly appearance. No regional lymphadenopathy was detected. She had no history of tuberculosis. Chest radiography was normal, but the intradermal tuberculin test was positive. Histopathological findings showed lymphohistiocytic infiltration in the superficial dermis and non-necrotizing epitheloid cell granulomas surrounded by lymphocytes in the deep dermis. Acid-fast bacilli (AFB) staining and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay results were negative, but based on the clinical and histopathological findings, a diagnosis of lupus vulgaris was made. A four-drug protocol including isoniazid 5mg/day, rifampin 10mg/day, pyrazinamide 25mg/day, and ethambutol 18mg/kg was started. The cutaneous lesion showed improvement within 6 weeks. Lupus vulgaris is the most common form of cutaneous tuberculosis (CTB). A proper diagnosis of skin tuberculosis requires a good correlation of clinical findings and diagnostic testing, including AFB smears, cultures, PCR and histopathological examination. Our case clearly shows that although the diagnosis of lupus vulgaris is confirmative with AFB staining and PCR, with their low positive rates, the diagnosis is largely based on the clinical and histopathological findings.
Two cases of injection complication following an illegal practice

Illegal filler injection by non-medical personnel has been increasing resulting in numerous side effects. In the literature, bruising, hypersensitivity reaction, infection, as well as granuloma formation and tissue necrosis have been reported. We herein report two cases of filler complication following an illegal practice by non-medical personnel; one case is the development of calcinosis cutis, and the other case is the fat necrosis at the site of injection. The first was a 52-year-old female presenting with firm subcutaneous nodules on the left pelvic area for 1 year. The patient had had injections on the left pelvic area for abdominal lipolysis 1~2 times/month by non-medical personnel. The histopathologic findings showed calcification in the deep dermis. The patient wasdiagnosed as calcinosis cutis. The other patient was a 77-year-old female presenting with skin-colored firm mass on the right cheek for several years. The patient had injection of an unknown material on the face under illegal settings 30 years ago. The histopathologic findings showed fat necrosis. We assumed that the deep portion of the firm mass was not biopsied accurately and may be a foreign body granuloma. Filler injection is a relatively safe aesthetic procedure, but complications can occur, especially if they are injected under illegal settings. Patients need to better understand the risks of an illegal injection.
Functional compounds and physiological activities of adzuki bean cultivars

This study investigated the functional compounds and physiological activities of adzuki bean (AB) cultivars to select a good cultivar for use in the food processing and cosmetic industries. The total dietary fiber content of AB cultivar Geomguseul (9.54%) was higher than other cultivars. The total polyphenol content of Huinguseul was 15.53 mg/g extract, which was higher than that of other cultivars, and the phytic acid content of Chungjupat was the highest at 1.08 g/100 g. DPPH radical scavenging activity was higher in Hongeon (21.08 mg TE/g sample) compared to the other cultivars. Huinguseul showed higher ABTS radical scavenging activity than other cultivars, and the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) value of Huinguseul was the highest at 106.95 mM. The α-glucosidase and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of AB cultivars Huinguseul (29.30%) and Geomguseul (57.77%) were higher than other cultivars, respectively. To summarize, Huinguseul and Geomguseul could be highly useful as food and cosmetic materials.

According to the characters of tourist resources in the potentiality with that, the tourist development means to seek for the enlargement of tourist use. It is to be falling behind that the side of compared development with tourist development potentiality in this Gwanju area. Firstly, it must be an increased effects of economics by the strengthen of the potentiality functional and regional self-supporting and by both the analysis of potentiality in the tourist development and the assessment of politics of regional development. Secondly, the need for the tourist development as the national politice will be required in future. Therefore, it is imperative to develop the moodung, Jili, Chokae mountain, Chinnam, Youngsan river, Dooryum, Wando and Dadohae area, as tourist area. Thirdly, such regional development as spcial products, cultures, and landscopes should be encoureged in accordance with the interest of tourist. Fourthly, first of all, the comfortable traffic as well as hotel facilities should be easily available.

Background/Aims: A lot of trials involving nucleoside- naive, lamivudine-resistant patients are needed to determine entecavir`s optimal treatment duration, long-term safety, and durability of response, including rate of resistance. The aim of our study is to compare the efficacy of entecavir (ETV) between chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients who had not received a mucleoside analogue and who had failed in lamivudine (LMV) therapy. Methods: From July 2006 to April 2007, 77 patients with CHB were treated with ETV from 2 medical institutions in Korea. 77 patients were divided into two groups. 49 patients who had not received a nucleoside analogue were treated with ETV 0.5 mg/d. 28 patients who were resistant to LMV therapy (persistent viremia and documented YMDD mutations while receiving LMV) were switched to ETV 1.0 mg/d. The duration of treatment was 3-9 (median, 7) months. All patients were assessed for HBV DNA, alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalization, HBeAg sero-conversion, and safety. Results: The rates of virologic response and normalization of ALT levels were significantly higher naive patients than in LMV resistant patients at week 12 and 24, respectively (p=0.015, p=0.003). Mean change from baseline in serum HBV DNA was -4.1, and -5.5 log10 copies/mL for naive patients and -2.5, and -2.6 log10 copies/mL for LMV resistant patients at 12 and 24 weeks, respectively (p<0.001, p<0.001). Although there was no virologic breakthrough, only one LMV resistant patient did not show the decline in baseline serum HBV DNA. There were no serious adverse events on-treatment. Conclusions: In patients with LMV resistant CHB, entecavir provides inferior viral loud reduction and ALT normalization compared with naive patients.
