A 3 month-old male dog with clinical signs of anorexia, soft stool, ocular and nasal discharge, cough and respiratory distress was submitted to the Cheju National University for diagnosis. At necropsy, tan to purple-red sublobar to lobar consolidations were presented in apical and cardiac lobe of lung. Histopathologically, severe diffuse bronchointerstitial pneumonia with necrotic bronchiolitis was noted in the lung. The demyelinating encephalitis and astrocytosis were presented in cerebellum and cerebrum. Numerous round, ovoid or cluster of tachyzoites were also identified in alveolar lumen, alveolar wall and cytoplasm of macrophages in the lung. The orgasnisms were demonstrated as Toxoplasma (T) gondii by immunohistochemistry. Intranuclear or intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies were seen in the glial cells of the cerebellum. Canine distemper virus (CDV) specific antigens were demonstrated in the cerebellum by the immunohistochemistry. In our knowledge, this is believed to be the first confirmed report of co-infection of CDV and T gondii in dog in Korea.

The inhibitive effect of monethanolamine, N-methylethanolamine and on carbon steel S.S.41 in the 3.5% NaCl solution has been studied using polarization test method. A significant retardation of corrosion rate was observed in the 3.5% NaCl solution containing the inhibitors. The adsorption characteristic of inhibitor was studied and the adsorption heat(???)was calculated by molecular interaction value f. The results obtained from polarization test method revealed that the efficiency of corrosion inhibition was effected by molecular interactions of adsorption complex on metal surface. Using Frumkin adsorption isotherm, which was most favorable isotherm to the experimental data, molecular interaction of adsorption(f) for MEA, and NMEA on carbon steel surface were calculated to be -8.77, and -8.25 Kcal/mole, respectively. From these results, the heat of adsorption were estimated to be 16.77 and 12.18Kcal/mole, respectively. From the activation energy values, it was known that mechanism of corrosion had been changed by the addition of corrosion inhibitors.

Background: Many patients with glaucoma have difficulty using antiglaucoma eye drops because of dry eye symptom. In this prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we evaluated the effect of Korean Red Ginseng on dry eye syndrome in patients with glaucoma treated with antiglaucoma eye drops. Methods: Forty-nine participants were allocated to the Korean Red Ginseng (3 g/day; n= 24) or placebo (n=25) groups for 8 weeks. Tear film stability, fluorescein corneal staining, conjunctival hyperemia, tear production, grade of meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eye questionnaire (Ocular Surface Disease Index) were evaluated at baseline and on completion of the treatment. Results: Almost all patients displayed dry eye symptoms and signs at baseline. After the 8-week intervention, Korean Red Ginseng supplementation significantly improved the tear film stability and total Ocular Surface Disease Index score, as compared to placebo (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Korean Red Ginseng supplementation may provide an additional treatment option for dry eye and patients with glaucoma using antiglaucoma eye drops.

PURPOSE:: Normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) is a heterogenous disease, and there is still controversy about subclassifications of this disorder. On the basis of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), we subdivided NTG with hierarchical cluster analysis using optic nerve head (ONH) parameters and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thicknesses. PATIENTS AND METHODS:: A total of 200 eyes of 200 NTG patients between March 2011 and June 2012 underwent SD-OCT scans to measure ONH parameters and RNFL thicknesses. We classified NTG into homogenous subgroups based on these variables using a hierarchical cluster analysis, and compared clusters to evaluate diverse NTG characteristics. RESULTS:: Three clusters were found after hierarchical cluster analysis. Cluster 1 (62 eyes) had the thickest RNFL and widest rim area, and showed early glaucoma features. Cluster 2 (60 eyes) was characterized by the largest cup/disc ratio and cup volume, and showed advanced glaucomatous damage. Cluster 3 (78 eyes) had small disc areas in SD-OCT and were comprised of patients with significantly younger age, longer axial length, and greater myopia than the other 2 groups. CONCLUSIONS:: A hierarchical cluster analysis of SD-OCT scans divided NTG patients into 3 groups based upon ONH parameters and RNFL thicknesses. It is anticipated that the small disc area group comprised of younger and more myopic patients may show unique features unlike the other 2 groups.

<P>Objective:In patients with pulsatile tinnitus (PT), physical examination such as auscultation with head position change or digital compression over the ipsilateral jugular vein provides physicians with important information. However, objective diagnosis of PT is sometimes limited because 1) audible bruit is absent on auscultation in some patients, 2) abnormal vascular structures found in radiologic evaluation is not always pathognomonic because they can be found in asymptomatic subjects as well, and 3) although an objective diagnostic tool using transcanal sound recording has recently been introduced, special equipment is needed. In this regard, recent studies that have reported ipsilateral low-frequency hearing loss (LFHL) on pure-tone audiometry (PTA) in some patients with PT, and its recovery after successful management, prompted us to conduct a retrospective observational study on the characteristics of the audiometric profile, the association between the audiometric profile and radiologic findings, and pre- and posttreatment changes in low-frequency hearing thresholds in PT patients. We tested two hypotheses: PT patients with marked vascular pathologies located close to the cochlea may show ipsilateral pseudo-LFHL (PLFHL) because of the masking effects of the PT itself, and their PLFHL may disappear if their vascular pathology is successfully managed by surgical or endovascular intervention.Study Design:Retrospective case review.Setting:Tertiary referral center.Patients:A total of 85 PT subjects who underwent both audiologic and radiologic examinations.Main Outcome Measure:All patients' pre- and posttreatment PTA thresholds and radiologic findings were analyzed. By comparing the LFHL (an ipsilateral hearing threshold greater than 10dB HL at both 250 and 500Hz or greater than 20dB HL at either 250 or 500Hz compared with the contralateral side) group and a non-LFHL group with regard to the incidence of vascular structural abnormalities, we evaluated the incidence of abnormal vascular structures in the head and neck between the LFHL and non-LFHL groups. In addition, by comparing pre- and posttreatment PTA thresholds of seven PT patients with ipsilateral LFHL, we further evaluated the changes in low-frequency hearing thresholds and their role as an objective sign for diagnosis and outcome evaluation.Results:Of 85 patients, 22 (25.9%) presented with ipsilateral LFHL. Compared with patients without this condition, patients with ipsilateral LFHL showed a significantly higher rate of abnormal vascular structure. In addition, most of the radiologic abnormalities found in the LFHL group were highly suspicious causative lesions that are responsible for the perception of PT according to the previous literature. In eight PT patients with ipsilateral LFHL who underwent both pre- and posttreatment audiograms, the average posttreatment pure-tone threshold at 250Hz showed significant improvement compared with the pretreatment threshold.Conclusion:PT patients presenting with ipsilateral LFHL have higher possibility of having a discrete vascular pathology near the cochlea on radiologic evaluation. As ipsilateral LFHL improves in most patients after treatment, LFHL in patients with PT may be PLFHL because of the masking effects of the pulsatile sound, and the changes in the low-frequency thresholds may be applicable for objective diagnosis and evaluation of the effects of the treatment.</P>
