Aims: The protective effect of statin on the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and survival has been demonstrated from previous observational studies in patients with chronic live disease. However, it is unclear whether statin use is associated with a risk reduction of HCC recurrence in patients who underwent liver transplantation (LT) for HCC. Methods: Consecutive patients who underwent LT for HCC between January 1995 and December 2019 were enrolled. Patients who used statins for more than 30 days after the date of LT were defined as statin users. Patients were excluded when they were followed up for less than 3 months or HCC recurred within 2 months after LT. We used time-dependent Cox regression models to overcome immortal-time bias. Results: A total of 430 patients were enrolled and 321 patients (74.7%) were statin non-users and 109 (25.3%) were statin users. During a median follow-up of 64.9 months (range 3.1- 267.5), 298 patients (69.3%) survived and 111 (25.8%) expired. The number of patients within the Milan criteria before LT was 356 out of 427 (83.4%). HCC recurred in 79 (18.4%) patients after a median 11.1 months (range 2.4-150.8) of LT. Statin use was associated with significantly lower risk of HCC recurrence after adjustment of age, sex, history of pre-treatment, trough concentration of calcineurin inhibitor, total cholesterol, AFP, Milan criteria and time-dependent covariates (DM, use of aspirin and metformin) (P=0.043, HR = 0.98, CI 0.95-1.00). Statin users also had a significantly higher overall survival and lower HCC-related mortality than statin non-users (P=0.003 and P=0.042 by Cox regression analysis, respectively). There was a dose-dependent relationship between statin use and HCC recurrence. Conclusions: Statin use significantly reduced the risk of HCC recurrence and improved survival of patients who underwent LT for HCC.

Hereditary fructose intolerance is an autosomal recessive disorder that is caused by a deficiency in fructose-1- phosphate aldolase (Aldolase B). Children can present with hypoglycemia, jaundice, elevated liver enzymes and hepatomegaly after intake of dietary fructose. Long-term intake of fructose in undiagnosed patients can result in hepatic failure or renal failure. We experienced a case of hereditary fructose intolerance presenting as recurrent hepatitis-like episodes. Detailed evaluation of her dietary habits revealed her avoidance of sweetened foods and fruits. Genetic analysis of ALDOB revealed that she is a homozygote for a novel frameshifting mutation c[758_759insT]+[758_759insT] (p.[val25 3fsX24]+[val253fsX24]). This report is the fi rst of a Korean patient diagnosed with hereditary fructose intolerance using only molecular testing without undergoing intravenous fructose tolerance test or enzyme assay. <P>Background: The incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) varies depending on ethnicity, but the precise differences remain to be firmly established. This study therefore evaluated the disparity in coronary artery calcification (CAC), as a marker of CAD, in asymptomatic US and Korean adults. Methods and Results: CAC score was compared between asymptomatic Korean (n=15,128) and US (n=7,533) adults. Propensity score matching was performed according to age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and current smoking, which generated 2 cohorts of 5,427 matched pairs. Both cohorts were categorized according to age group: 45-54, 55-64, and 65-74 years. Overall, the prevalence of CAC score >0, >100, and >400 in Korean adults was lower than in US adults (P<0.001, all). According to increasing age groups, the likelihood of CAC was most often lower in Korean adults, especially in Korean women. The odds of having CAC >400 in Korean adults aged 65-74 years was 0.66 (95% CI: 0.48-0.91) overall, 0.78 (95% CI: 0.52-1.19) in men, and 0.50 (95% CI: 0.29-0.86) in women, compared with US counterparts. Conclusions: Korean adults have a lower prevalence and severity of atherosclerotic burden as assessed on CAC, compared with US adults, but the disparity in CAC according to ethnicity may decline with older age.</P>
Study on the Microstructure and Friction Characteristics of ZrN Coatings Containing Cu and Si

To improve the mechanical properties of coatings used in cutting tools and automotive parts, ZrCuSiN coatings were deposited in an argon-nitrogen gas mixture using magnetron sputtering at various nitrogen gas flow rates. The structural properties of the fabricated ZrCuSiN coatings were investigated using the friction coefficient, wear coefficient, coating hardness, and elastic modulus via nano indentation and ball-on-disk friction testing. The surface morphology of the coatings was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structural characterization results show a typical face-centered cubic ZrN structure with peaks in the (111) and (200) directions. The highest hardness was obtained for coatings deposited at a nitrogen gas flow rate of 5 sccm, and the coefficient of friction was lowest at a nitrogen gas flow rate of 3 sccm. It was found that the high hardness of the coating causes wearing of the counterpart. In contrast, a 3 sccm coating with stable hardness and coefficient of friction was found to be the most optimal.

This paper compares and analyzes online update techniques which estimate the parameters of battery equivalent circuit model in real time. Online update techniques, which are based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and Recursive Least Square (RLS) methods, are constructed by considering dynamic characteristics of the battery. Each online update technique is compared in terms of complexity and accuracy in order to propose a suitable guide for selecting algorithms on various types of battery applications and the performance of the techniques is verified by simulation and experimental results.
Liquid biopsy using cfDNA to predict radiation therapy response in solid tumors

Purpose: This study explored the potential feasibility of cell-free DNA (cfDNA) in monitoring treatment response through the measurement of chromosomal instabilities using I-scores in the context of radiation therapy (RT) for other solid tumors. Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 23 patients treated with RT for lung, esophageal, and head and neck cancer. Serial cfDNA monitoring was performed before RT, 1 week after RT, and 1 month after RT. Low-depth whole-genome sequencing was done using Nano kit and NextSeq 500 (Illumina Inc.). To measure the extent of genome-wide copy number instability, I-score was calculated. Results: Pretreatment I-score was elevated to more than 5.09 in 17 patients (73.9%). There was a significant positive correlation between the gross tumor volume and the baseline I-score (Spearman rho = 0.419, p = 0.047). The median I-scores at baseline, post-RT 1 week (P1W), and post-RT 1 month (P1M) were 5.27, 5.13, and 4.79, respectively. The I-score at P1M was significantly lower than that at baseline (p = 0.002), while the difference between baseline and P1W was not significant (p = 0.244). Conclusion: We have shown the feasibility of cfDNA I-score to detect minimal residual disease after RT in patients with lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and head and neck cancer. Additional studies are ongoing to optimize the measurement and analysis of I-scores to predict the radiation response in cancer patients.

<P>Despite the availability of large-area graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), the control of a uniform monolayer graphene remained challenging. Here, we report a method of acquiring monolayer graphene by laser irradiation. The accumulation of heat on graphene by absorbing light, followed by oxidative burning of upper graphene layers, which strongly relies on the wavelength of light and optical parameters of the substrate, was <I>in situ</I> measured by the G-band shift in Raman spectroscopy. The substrate plays a crucial role as a heat sink for the bottom monolayer graphene, resulting in no burning or etching. Oscillatory thinning behavior dependent on the substrate oxide thickness was evaluated by adopting a simple Fresnel’s equation.
