Background: Pain is a complex mechanism which involves different systems, including the opioidergic and GABAergic systems. Due to the side effects of chemical analgesic agents, attention toward natural agents have been increased. Artemisinin is an herbal compound with widespread modern and traditional therapeutic indications, which its interaction with the GABAergic system and antinoniceptive effects on neuropathic pain have shown. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of artemisinin during inflammatory pain and interaction with the GABAergic and opioidergic systems by using a writhing response test. Methods: On the whole, 198 adult male albino mice were used in 4 experiments, including 9 groups (n = 6) each with three replicates, by intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of artemisinin (2.5, 5, and 10 mg/kg), nal-oxone (2 mg/kg), bicuculline (2 mg/kg), saclofen (2 mg/kg), indomethacin (5 mg/kg), and ethanol (10 mL/kg). Writhing test responses were induced by i.p. injection of 10 mL/kg of 0.6% acetic acid, and the percentage of writhing inhibition was recorded. Results: Results showed significant dose dependent anti-nociceptive effects from artemisinin which, at a 10 mg/kg dose, was statistically similar to indomethacin. Neither saclofen nor naloxone had antinociceptive effects and did not antagonize antinociceptive effects of artemisinin, whereas bicuculline significantly inhibited the antinocicptive effect of artemisinin. Conclusions: It seems that antinocicptive effects of artemisinin are mediated by GABAA receptors.

This work provides an insight into the separation of azeotropic mixtures by using two different techniques: pressure swing distillation and extractive distillation. Both methods are used to separate an azeotropic mixture of methanol and benzene. This mixture exhibits a minimum boiling azeotrope at temperature 57.97 oC and pressure 1 bar with mole fractions of 0.61 and 0.39 for methanol and benzene, respectively. However, the azeotropic point in methanol and benzene mixture is pressure sensitive, which can be shifted by changing pressure with a process called pressure swing distillation. Extractive distillation with suitable solvent is another method to separate such kind of mixture. Both methods are rigorously simulated and optimized for minimum heat duties. Internal heat integration is applied too for increasing energy efficiency. New optimization techniques are carried out with process simulator Aspen HYSYS V8.4 and results reveal the best method for separation of methanol and benzene azeotropic mixture.

An efficient and rapid plant regeneration system via direct organogenesis was established for felty germander(Teucrium polium L.), an endangered and valuable medicinal plant. Induction of shoot organogenesis was obtainedusing nodal explants and preconditioned intact seedlings on the MS medium supplemented with various concentrationsand combinations of plant growth regulators. The highest number of shoots (7.14/explants) was obtained from nodalexplants cultured on MS containing 2.0 mg·L-1 BAP and 0.5 mg·L-1 NAA. For preconditioning, Best response in termsof number of adventitious shoots per explant (6.85) and greatest shoot length (5.43 cm) was obtained with seedlingsperpetrated in 0.5 mg·L-1 TDZ. The rooted plantlets were acclimatized successfully in the greenhouse with a survivalrate of 100%. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the greenhouse-grown tissue culture raised plantsin total flavonoid contents. Methanolic extracts of plants raised on TDZ (0.5 mg·L-1) containing medium showed thehighest amount of flavonoid contents (1.67 mg Ru·g-1 DW) and a higher antioxidant activity (52.31%) in comparisonwith the field-grown mother plant. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of plants raised preconditioningprocedure revealed there were no somaclonal variations among them. Our results indicated that thecytokinin-preconditioning mediated micropropagation protocol could be used for the production of a large number oftrue-to-type plants of T. polium, which may contain higher quantities of valuable phytochemicals than those of wildplants.

An explicit surface potential calculation method of gate-all-around MOSFET (GAAMOSFET) devices which takes into account both interface trap charge and varying doping levels is presented. The results of the method are extensively verified by numerical simulation. Results from the model are used to find qualitative and quantitative effect of interface trap charge on subthreshold slope (SS) of GAAMOSFET devices. Further, design constraints of GAAMOSFET devices with emphasis on the effect of interface trap charge on device SS performance are investigated.

Maraging steels are a class of low-carbon ultra-high-strength martensitic steels. Due to their excellent weldability, these steels have been widely applied for laser-based additive manufacturing (AM). MAR-60HRC is a newly developed maraging grade for AM with a nominal chemical composition of 13.0Ni-15.0Co-10.0Mo-0.2Ti, Fe bal. (wt%), capable of achieving hardness levels of ~ 740 HV. Alternatively, 18Ni300 is a commercialized maraging steel with an excellent combination of strength and toughness at the peak aged hardness (i.e., ~ 590 HV). This work aims to investigate the properties and microstructure of MAR-60HRC fabricated by Laser Directed Energy Deposition (L-DED). Further, the manufacturability of bimetallic parts comprising a tough 18Ni300 core and a hard MAR-60HRC on the surface was evaluated. After proper aging, the multi-layered material showed a surface hardness of ~ 720 HV1 and apparent fracture toughness of 71 MPa m1/2, higher than that of MAR-60HRC (i.e., 60 MPa m1/2), and lower than 18Ni300 (i.e., 90 MPa m1/2). The excellent combination of surface hardness and fracture toughness was discussed, considering the crack arrest at the interface and the flawless interface between the two steels.

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of baseline frailty status (as measured by modified frailty index-5 [mFI-5]) versus age on postoperative outcomes of patients undergoing surgery for spinal tumors using data from a large national registry. Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was used to collect spinal tumor resection patients’ data from 2015 to 2019 (n = 4,662). Univariate and multivariate analyses for age and mFI-5 were performed for the following outcomes: 30-day mortality, major complications, unplanned reoperation, unplanned readmission, hospital length of stay (LOS), and discharge to a nonhome destination. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the discriminative performance of age versus mFI-5. Results: Both univariate and multivariate analyses demonstrated that mFI-5 was a more robust predictor of worse postoperative outcomes as compared to age. Furthermore, based on categorical analysis of frailty tiers, increasing frailty was significantly associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes. ‘Severely frail’ patients were found to have the highest risk, with odds ratio 16.4 (95% confidence interval [CI],11.21–35.44) for 30-day mortality, 3.02 (95% CI, 1.97–4.56) for major complications, and 2.94 (95% CI, 2.32–4.21) for LOS. In ROC curve analysis, mFI-5 score (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.743) achieved superior discrimination compared to age (AUC = 0.594) for mortality. Conclusion: Increasing frailty, as measured by mFI-5, is a more robust predictor as compared to age, for poor postoperative outcomes in spinal tumor surgery patients. The mFI-5 may be clinically used for preoperative risk stratification of spinal tumor patients.
