We studied the effects of natural juices as grape and apple juice on callus formation of Aloe vera. L. The condition medium for callus differentiation was made MS medium with 0.2 ㎎/ℓ IAA, 0.3 ㎎/ℓ kinetin and 100 ㎎/ℓ grape or/and apple juice. The callus tissue was induced on this medium for 21 days, but callus formation was not found. However, cut aloe tissue released an extracellular material into media after 7 days as the culture progressed. The condition medium with grape juice brought to decrease cellular metabolism due to synthesis phenol and flavonoid which may resulted by necrosis of tissues like browning reaction. The an extracellular material and aloe tissue were extracted by as a solvent from medium, cultured aloe tissue and natural aloe tissue and those extracts were analysed for the determinate the concentration of phenol, flavonoid and vitamin C content. In the result, the control medium without addition of natural juice had increased of phenol compound and flavonoid content. The condition medium with addition of apple juice had higher content of flavonoid and vitamin C compared with other extracts. As a result, a composition of the apple juice stimulate metabolism of functional material synthesis.

In this study, we investigated the effects of a crosslinking agent and a compatibilizer on the mechanical and rheological properties of waste PP and waste ground rubber tire (WGRT) composites. In order to simulate a commercial TPV, the component of waste PP and WGRT was fixed at 30 and 70 wt%, respectively. With the simple addition of SEBS-g- MA into the waste PP/WGRT composites, the tensile strength of the composite was decreased, whereas both the elongation at break and impact strength were significantly increased because of rubbery characteristics of SEBS-g-MA. In order to further improve the properties of the composites, the waste PP/WGRT/SEBS-g-MA composites was revulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP). As expected, mechanical properties of the revulcanized composites was generally improved. Especially, with 15 and 1 phr of SEBS-g-MA and DCP, elongation at break was highest value of about 183% because of the recrosslinking of WGRT without chain scission of the main chain. It was found that complex viscosity of the revulcanized composite increased which might verify further vulcanization of the WGRT.

Bax, a mammalian proapoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family, can induce cell death when expressed in yeast or plant cells. To identify plant Bax inhibitors, we cotransformed a soybean cDNA library and the Bax gene into yeast cells and screened for expressed genes that prevented Bax-induced apoptosis. From the Bax-inhibiting genes isolated, ascorbate peroxidase (aAPX) was selected for characterization. The transcription of aAPX in plants was specifically induced by oxidative stress. Moreover, overexpression of aAPX partially suppressed the H_(2)D_(2)-sensitive phenotype of yeast cytosolic catalase T (Δctt)- and thermosensitive phenotype of cytochrome c peroxidase (Δccp)-deleted mutant cells. Examination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production using the fluorescence method of dihydrorhodamine 123 oxidation revealed that expression of Bax in yeast cells generated ROS, which was greatly reduced by coexpression with sAPX. Our results collectively suggest that sAPX inhibits the generation of ROS by Bax, which in turn suppresses Bax-induced cell death in yeast.

The magnetic properties and mineral composition of black burnished pottery and reddish-brown pottery with soot unearthed from Pungnaptoseong, and restored black burnished pottery were investigated to determine the black coloring mechanism and firing condition. Results indicate that an increase in the amount of magnetic iron oxide (especially Fe₃O₄) by the thermal reduction reaction of hematite influences the development of black color on the surface. Furthermore, for each sample, the black surface was determined to contain the highest amount of magnetic iron oxide, followed by the black to dark gray matrix, and then the brownish matrix. These results suggested that the ancient black burnished pottery was produced by a stronger reduction reaction on the surface, as compared to the matrix during the firing process. Further, the pottery with a black to dark gray matrix was produced through intense and prolonged reduction firing, compared to the pottery with a brownish matrix.

Purpose: Accurate monitoring of information from various agricultural vehicles is one of the most important factors for appropriate management strategy of field operations. While there has been a number of study and design on applications of sensors and actuators for data acquisition and control system in tractor, incompatibility between various customized hardware and software has become a major obstacle to the universal deployment in real field operation. International standard for implementation of electronic control unit (ECU) in agricultural vehicles has becoming a mandatory requirement for inter-operation compatibility in the international trade of agricultural vehicle industries. The ISO11783 standard is basically based upon well known communication technology designated using the controller area network (CAN) bus. While CAN bus could provide 1.0 Mbps of communication speed, the standard only recommended 250 kbps. Methods: This study presents the implementation and evaluation of ISO11783 for tractor electronic control units (TECU)with a higher transmission rate from multiple ECU than 250 kbps. Throughput and loss rate of the developed prototype were calculated across manipulated bus load for laboratory experimental tests, and the maximum requirement of transmission rate by ISO 11873 was satisfied with lower than 60% of bus load. Results: Field tests with a TECU implemented to process messages from global positioning system (GPS) receiver resulted that the root mean square error of position information was lower than 4 m with 0.5 m/s as a travelling speed. Conclusions: Results of this study represent the utilization of the international standard ISO11783 to providepractical developments in terms with the inter-operability of TECU.

Background: Gout is a recurrent infi ammatory arthritis caused by monosodium urate, which can be prevented urate-lowering agents such as allopurinol. However, gout attack can still recur during urate-lowering therapy. In this study we investigated the risk factors associated with recurrence of gout attacks during allopurinol treatment. Methods: A total of 527 gout patients were enrolled, who took allopurinol at least for 6 months at Seoul National University Hospital between March 2001 and March 2013. The patients were divided into those who have ever experienced recurrence of gout attack (recurrence group) and those who haven`t (non-recurrence group) during allopurinol treatment. To reveal the risk factors for gout recurrence, we compared baseline characteristics, concomitant diseases, uric acid level, creatinine level, presence of tophi and type of prophylaxis. Results: The mean age of the enrolled patients was 58.7 years and 96.2% were male. The patients were followed-up for mean duration of 3.17 years. During urate-lowering therapy, 323 patients (61.3%) experienced recurrence of gout attack. In recurrence group, baseline uric acid level was signifi cantly higher than non-recurrence group (8.6 2.0 vs 8.1 1.9 mg/dL, p=0.0043). The presence of tophi was more commonly observed in recurrence group, too (29.4% vs 18.6%, p=0.006). The other variables showed no difference between two groups, which include age, sex, concomitant diseases, the presence of urinary stone, the type of prophylaxis treatment and initial creatinine level. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, high uric acid level (>8.5mg/dl) and the presence of tophi were found to be risk factors for gout attack during allopurinol treatment. Conclusion: Our study revealed that patients who show uric acid level > 8.5 mg/ dL and/or tophi at baseline have higher risk for recurrence of gout attack during allopurinol treatment. Education and closer follow-up will be required for those risky patients.
