낙동강 하류지역의 충적점토층에 대한 토질역학적 특성을 규명하고자 현재 수행되고 있는 대단위 현장에서 실시된 8443회의 토질시험결과는 수집하여 분석하였다. 이 분석결과는 다음과 같다 : 이 충적점토는 해성, 삼각주 및 해안점토들이 갖는 일반적인 특성과 같이 변화가 몹시 심하였다. 즉, 물리적특성은 깊이와 무관하게 폭넓은 분포를 보여 주었으며, 점토광물은 할로이사이트인 것으로 판명되었다. 역학적특성은 다양한 분포를 나타내었지만, 일축압축강도는 깊이에 따라 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. 그러나 예민비는 깊이에 거의 무관하였다. 압축특성을 나타내는 압축지수는 0.2~0.8 사이에서 폭넓게 변화하며, 점성토는 미완숙 내지는 정규압밀상태로 추정되었다. In order to investigate the engineering properties on the alluvial clays around the estuary of the Nakdong river, all results of 8443 laboratory soil tests were collected and riviewed, which were performed at several heavy construction sites. The investigated results are as follows : the soil properties are severely variable as the general trend of marine, deltaic and coastal clays. The physical properties show an irregular fashion independent of depth. And the clay mineral is investigated as an halloysite. The mechanical properties show a wide range of distribution, however, the unconfined compression is increased with increasing depth. The sensitivity is roughly constant independent of depth. And the compression index C_(c) is 0.2 to 0.8 and the clays are evaluated between underconsolidated and normally consolidated states.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Although multiple reports using animal models have confirmed that melatonin appears to promote neuroprotective effects following ischemia/reperfusion-induced brain injury, the relationship between its protective effects and activation of autophagy in Purkinje cells following asphyxial cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CA/CPR) remains unclear. Rats used in this study were randomly assigned to 6 groups as follows; vehicle-treated sham operated group, vehicle-treated asphyxial CA/CPR operated group, melatonin-treated sham operated group, melatonin-treated asphyxial CA/CPR operated group, PDOT (a MT2 melatonin receptor antagonist) plus (+) melatonin-treated sham operated group and PDOT+melatonin-treated asphyxial CA/CPR operated group. Melatonin (20 mg/kg, i.p., 4 times before CA and 3 times after CA) treatment significantly improved survival rate and neurological deficit compared with the vehicle-treated asphyxial CA/CPR rats (survival rates ≥40% vs 10%), showing that melatonin treatment exhibited protective effect against asphyxial CA/CPR-induced Purkinje cell death. The protective effect of melatonin against CA/CPR-induced Purkinje cell death paralleled a remarkable attenuation of autophagy-like processes (Beclin-1, Atg7 and LC3), as well as a dramatic reduction in superoxide anion radical (O<SUB>2</SUB>·-), intense enhancements of CuZn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) and MnSOD (SOD2) expressions. Furthermore, the protective effect was notably reversed by treatment with PDOT, which is a selective MT2 antagonist. In brief, melatonin conferred neuroprotection against asphyxial CA/CPR-induced Purkinje cell death via inhibiting autophagic activation by reducing expressions of O<SUB>2</SUB>·- and increasing expressions of antioxidant enzymes, and suggests that MT2 is involved in neuroprotective effect of melatonin against Purkinje cell death caused by asphyxial CA/CPR.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Melatonin prevents cerebellar Purkinje cell death following asphyxial cardiac arrest. </LI> <LI> Melatonin attenuates autophagy-like processes via MT2 receptor. </LI> <LI> Melatonin attenuates increase of superoxide anion radical via MT2 receptor. </LI> <LI> Melatonin maintains antioxidant enzymes expressions via MT2 receptor. </LI> </UL> </P>

A new powdery mildew resistant squash (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) ‘Miso' was bred from a cross between powdery mildew resistant true variety ‘Sangol’ and powdery mildew susceptible inbred line ‘Seoulmadi’ at National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS). The ‘Miso’ variety was vigorous and highly resistant to powdery mildew. It showed white green fruit color. The variety yielded 21.3MT/ha which is 52% more than control variety.

The authors report surgical experiences in patients with severe psychiatric illness refractory to all other conventional treatments. All 5 patient in this series were referred from their own psychiatrists. One patient with aggressive-conductive disorder. who was cared for in a closed ward. underwent bilateral amygdalotomy and bifrontal leukotomy. Four patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder were treated by limbic leukotomy. which is a combination of subcaudate tractotomy and anterior cingulotomy. Target points were selected according to the individual symptoms of each patients. Target construction was performed under ventriculogram or computerized tomographic guidance. using a Hitchcock stereotactic frame. All the procedures were performed under local anesthesia. except for the patient with aggressive-conductive disorder for whom the surgey had to be performde under general anesthesia because of the incooperative nature of the patient. The result of each surgery was good without serious complication. During the follow-up period. all the patients were freed from disturbing symptoms and successfully returned to their premorbid social life. Psychosurgery can be helpful in certain patients with severe. chronic disabling. and treatment-refractory psychiatric illness.

We reviewed 549 electrocardiograms obtained from 95 patients with Korean hemorrhagic fever to investigate the incidence and electrocardiographic characteristics, observe evolutional changes in those findings during the course of illness, identify the correlations with clinical findings, and then suggest pathophysiologic mechanisms in the development of abnormal electrocardiographic findings. The overall incidence of electrocardiographic abnormalites was 95.7%, and the frequency of each phase was 87.8% in the febrile phase, 91.3% in the hypotensive phase, 86.5% in the oliguric phase, 76.4% in the diuretic phase and 43.0% in the convalescent phase. The cardinal electrocardiographic findings were QT prolongation(82.1%), sinus bradycardia(73.7%), prominent U wave(53.7%), tall and peaked T wave(51.6%), ST-T changes(41.1 %) and sinus tachycardia(35.8%). The most frequently observed electrocardiographic findings of each phase were sinus tachycardia in the febrile and hypotensive phase, QT prolongation in the oliguric phase, sinus bradycardia in the diuretic phase and prominent U wave in the convalescent phase. The occurrence of abnormal electrocardiograms increased in patients with high serum creatinine levels during the oliguric and diuretic phases. The electrocardiographic abnormalities that persisted to the convalescent phase were QT prologation(seven cases), prominent U wave(seven cases), sinus bradycardia(five cases), and tall and peaked T wave(four cases). Even though almost all of the electrocardiographic abnormalities were mild and recovered shortly after the convalescent phase and there were no diagnostic electrocardiograms, we observed noteworthy electrocardiographic characteristics and evolutional changes during the course of illness and suggested the primary electrocardiographic changes in Korean hemorrhagic fever.

Percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stent placement is a standard treatment for the patients with iliac artery stenosis and occlusion. We present a case in which a large arterial pseudoaneurysm with bursting fracture of stent which was implanted 7 years ago for the left common iliac artery (LCIA) stenosis. A 72 year-old man who has treated in local orthopedic hospital for spinal stenosis was transferred to our hospital due to suspicious isolated LCIA aneurysm, of which maximal diameter was 3. 5cm on computed tomography (CT). Because CT had been checked for the evaluation of spine, image quality of iliac artery was very poor. Therefore, scheduled 3 demensional lower extremity CT angiography (LECT) and aortoiliac angiography (AIAG) were performed after admission. LECT revealed new abnormal findings that were pseudoaneurysm, not isolated de novo aneurysm with embedded metal fragment and thrombus at LCIA and implanted stent with patency on left external iliac artery (LEIA). AIAG showed LCIA pseudoaneurysm with bursting stent fracture with disintegration. We found that balloon-expandable stents (Corinthian®, cordis) were implanted for stenotic lesion of LCIA and LEIA each other 7 years ago. Conventional covered stent implantation such as Viabahn® (Gore) for the lesion was not considered, because the possibility of type Ia endoleak would be high from large diameter 13mm of LCIA ostium on LECT. Because the patient refused surgical replacement for LCIA pseudoaneurysm, endovascular repair with Endurant® (Medtronic) iliac limb stent-graft was tried. AIAG showed good fi ow without endoleak but revealed fi lling defect on left tibioperoneal trunk (LTPT) which was considered migrated thrombus due to forceful manipulation of delivery system. After the stent-graft implantation, the patient was discharged and followed LECT 1 month later. LECT showed implanted stent-graft without endoleak and resolved thrombus at LTPT.
