        The causes of pyogenic liver abscess has been known as biliary tract disease or intrabadominal infection but the large proportions of the patients has no apparent underlying disorders. Recently colonic mucosal lesions were reported in patients with cryptogenic liver abscess and it has been suggested that colonic mucosal break may play a role in developing liver abscess in otherwise healthy patients. We experienced a patient of severe recurrent liver abscess complicated with endophthalmitis only 3 months after successful treatment of initial cryptogenic liver abscess and a polypoid colon cancer was discovered by chance. It seems prudent to proceed colonoscopic examination in patients with cryptogenic liver abscess especially when it is recurrent.

      • Ormosanine from <i>Akebia quinata</i> suppresses ethanol-induced inflammation and apoptosis and activates antioxidants via the mitogen activated protein kinase signaling pathway

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated the hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptosis, and antioxidant effects of ormosanine from <I>Akebia quinata</I> in a rat model of ethanol-induced liver injury. Ormosanine was identified and isolated by high-performance liquid chromatography and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry. Oral administration of ormosanine significantly reduced the serum and liver levels of liver injury markers (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total cholesterol, and triglyceride). In addition, ormosanine significantly inhibited ethanol-induced cytochrome P450 2E1 activation and upregulated the levels of ALDH<SUB>2</SUB>. Ormosanine suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, cyclooxygenase-2, and interleukin-6) and downregulated apoptosis-related proteins (p53, cytochrome <I>C</I>, procaspase-3, poly[ADP-ribose] polymerase 1) by upregulating the phosphorylated-AKT, JNK, and extracellular signal regulated kinase pathways. Ormosanine exhibited antioxidant activity by upregulating superoxide dismutase, glutathione S-transferase, and B-cell lymphoma 2. Therefore, ormosanine plays an important role as a free radical-scavenger and may help prevent as well as alleviate ethanol-induced liver injury.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This is the first report of ormosanine isolated from <I>Akebia quinata</I>. </LI> <LI> Ormosanine increases anti-inflammation capacity in ethanol-induced liver. </LI> <LI> Ormosanine alleviates ethanol-induced liver injury by reducing oxidative stress. </LI> <LI> Ormosanine decreases apoptosis signaling induced by ethanol administration. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we evaluated whether ormosanine from AQ exhibited antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or anti-apoptotic effects in a rat model of ethanol-induced liver injury. The protective activities of ormosanine against ethanol toxicity in the liver include the suppression of acetaldehyde through activation of ALDH2 and suppression of CYP2E1. Our study shows that ormosanine protects against ethanol-induced liver injury by reducing the expression of inflammatory regulators (COX-2, TNF-α, and IL-6), and apoptosis-associated protein (p53, Bax, cytochrome <I>C</I>, procaspase-3, PARP-1) via activating the p-AKT and MAPK (p-ERK, and p-JNK) signaling pathways.       • Sesquiterpenes from fruits of Torilis japonica with inhibitory activity on melanin synthesis in B16 cells

        <P>Melanin, a dark macromolecular pigment, protects skin from harmful damage. However, abnormal accumulation is responsible for hyperpigmentation disorders. Melanogenesis inhibitors have therefore become important constituents in cosmetic products for depigmentation. Torilis japonica Decandolle (Umbelliferae) is a biennial plant which is distributed in East Asia. Fruits of this plant have been used for the treatment of skin disease and inflammation. In our previous study, torilin, a major sesquiterpene of T. japonica, showed an inhibitory effect on melanin production in alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH)-activated B16 melanoma cells. Further extensive chromatographic separation resulted in thirteen compounds. On the basis of spectroscopic analysis, the structures of the compounds isolated were determined to be three new sesquiterpenes, viz. a guaiane-type, epoxytorilinol (1), a eudesmane-type, elematorilone (2) and a cadinane-type, cardinatoriloside (3), together with ten known sesquiterpenes (4-13). Of the compounds isolated, compounds 4-6 and 11-13 inhibited alpha-MSH-activated melanin production in B16 melanoma cells with IC50 values from 72.9 to 191.0 mu M.</P>

      • Cryoprotective effect of an antifreeze protein purified from <i>Tenebrio molitor</i> larvae on vegetables

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are natural cryoprotectants that reduce the freezing point of water. They bind to the surface of a growing ice crystal and restrict its growth. The objectives of this study were to identify and purify the AFP from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I>, and to evaluate the use of this naturally occurring AFP for treating vegetables before freezing to minimize freeze-thaw damage. The purified <I>T. molitor</I> AFP possessed a structure similar to that of a β-helix. An amide Ι peak was evident at 1635 cm<SUP>−1</SUP> using Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, whilst the thermal hysteresis activity of purified <I>T. molitor</I> AFP was around 3.5 °C at 15 mg mL<SUP>−1</SUP>. Cucumber, carrot, zucchini, and onion samples treated with AFP or the control were frozen to measure their breaking force. AFP treated vegetables displayed a higher breaking force than the controls at all temperatures assessed. No change in breaking force was observed in any AFP-treated vegetable stored for 13 days at 0 °C, assuming that the breaking force at day 0 was 100%. In particular, the texture of cucumber was most effectively maintained when treated with AFP. These results indicate the potential value of the AFP from <I>T. molitor</I> larva in inhibiting ice crystal formation and preserving the quality of frozen vegetables.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This is the first report of cryoprotective effect of an antifreeze protein from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I> larvae on vegetables. </LI> <LI> The fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy spectrum peak of antifreeze protein was assigned to helix structures. </LI> <LI> Antifreeze protein retains ice recrystallization inhibition activity. </LI> <LI> Antifreeze protein from <I>Tenebrio molitor</I> larvae treatment has a cryoprotective effect on onion, cucumber, carrot, zucchini texture retention at 4, 0, −2, and −20 °C for 13 days. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        오늘날 티켓 유통 시장은 몇몇 대형 플랫폼이 독과점하고 있다. 대형 플랫폼은 공연 기획사에 티켓을 플랫폼에 위탁 판매해 주는 대가로 수수료를 청구한다. 이로 인해 플랫폼과 공연 기획사 간 이해관계 문제가 존재하며 종이 티켓으로 인하여 허위 판매 또는 암표 거래 등 불법 판매 피해사례가 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 이러한 문제들을 해결하기 위해 본 연구에서는 블록체인 양방향 매표 플랫폼을 제안한다. 블록체인 기술의 P2P(Peer-to-Peer) 특징으로 중개 수수료 문제를 해결하고, 거래 기록을 장부에 저장해 위·변조를 어렵게 하여 무결성을 보장한다. ERC-721 기반의 토큰을 티켓으로 발행하여 티켓이 대체 불가능하고 고유한 가치를 가지도록 하며 해당 인터페이스를 이용한 티켓 소유권 확인 및 티켓의 양도, dynamic QR 코드를 이용한 전자 티켓 발급 통해 암표거래가 불가능하게 함으로써 기존의 매표 시스템을 보완할 것으로 기대한다.

        The goal of this study was to analyze on heating and cooling load reuction effects when applying green roof systems in buildings, and simualtion on heating and cooling load coducted depending on thickness of soil layer. the research results can be summarized as follows. 1) When applying green roofs on the top of the building, Cooling load reduced from 0.35% to 3.78%. 2) when thickness of soil layer was 100mm, Heating and cooling load reduction was found to be most effective. Therefore, thick soil layer does not help reduce the load, it is judged that install the proper thickness of the roof is required. 3) When applying roof ventilation, ventilation measures in planning appropriate consideration should also be needed.

        밀가루를 대체한 다양한 종류의 쌀가루 머핀의 품질특성 및 항산화 효과

        밀가루를 대체하여 백미, 흑미, 홍국 분말을 첨가한 머핀의 품질특성 및 항산화를 측정하기 위하여 쌀 분말 50%를 첨가하여 머핀을 제조하였다. 머핀의 pH는 밀가루 머핀에서 가장 높았으며 홍국 머핀에서 낮은 경향을 보였다. 머핀의 높이 및 부피는 밀가루 머핀에서 가장 높았고, 부피는 백미, 흑미, 홍국 머핀 순으로 감소했다. 색도 측정 결과 명도값은 밀가루 머핀에서 가장 높았으며 흑미와 홍국 머핀에서 낮은 수치를 보였다. 적색도는 홍국 머핀에서 가장 높았으며 밀가루 머핀과 백미 머핀에서 가장 낮은 수치를 보였다. 황색도는 밀가루 머핀과 백미 머핀에서 유사했으며 홍국과 흑미 머핀 순으로 낮은 수치를 나타냈다. 텍스처를 측정한 결과, 탄력성과 응집성은 군 간의 유의적 차이가 나타나지 않았으며 검성과 씹힘성은 홍국 머핀에서 가장 높은 값을 나타내어 홍국의 첨가가 머핀의 쫀득거리는 맛을 강화한 것이라고 보이며 홍국 머핀의 씹힘성 증가는 밀가루를 대체하여 글루텐 저하와 아밀로스를 증가시키는 것으로 보인다. DPPH 라디칼 소거 활성과 SOD 활성 측정 결과는 홍국과 흑미 머핀이 밀가루 머핀에 비해 높게 나타났으며, ABTS 라디칼 소거 활성 측정 결과, 백미와 홍국 머핀에서 높은 항산화 활성을 보였다. 이러한 결과는 머핀 제조 시 밀가루를 백미, 흑미, 홍국 분말을 이용하여 대체 할 수 있으며 좋은 기능성 식품으로서 역할을 할 것임을 보여주었다. This study investigates the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of muffins prepared using various kinds of rice powder. Muffins were prepared by adding 50% white rice, black rice or red yeast rice powders, thereby replacing wheat flour in the basic formulation. Wheat flour muffins had the maximum height and volume. The lightness value of black rice and red yeast rice muffins was lower than that of the wheat flour muffins. Redness was the highest for red yeast rice muffins. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) radical scavenging and superoxide dismutase (SOD)- like activities activity of black rice and red yeast rice muffins were higher than those of the wheat flour muffins. The 2,2- azino-bis-(3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activity of red yeast rice muffin was also higher than that of the wheat flour muffins. Thus, the black and red yeast rice powders can be effectively used as functional ingredients in bakeries due to their antioxidant activities.
