Recent studies on media censorship in colonial Korea have converged on the newly discovered Choson Publication Monthly Police Report, published from 1928 to 1938 by the colonial government’s censorship bureau. These new studies do not explicitly problematize the issue of whether the Monthly Report is an accurate and comprehensive record of censorship activity or not. However, the record’s official stature does not necessarily guarantee accurate representation of the actual practice of censorship in that period. We found that the numbers of seized or erased articles recorded in the Monthly Report do not correspond with the numbers of articles actually expunged from newspaper pages. This study begins by problematizing the accuracy and comprehensiveness of the Monthly Report censorship records. In addition, it undertakes a comparative analysis of the Monthly Report and contemporary newspapers, employing both record-centric and page-centric approaches. This research also examines how the presence of censorship traces served as tangible evidence of colonial power.
Certified Reference Materials for Decommissioning Nuclear Power Plants
Minju Lee,Yoonhee Jung,Sang-Han Lee 한국방사성폐기물학회 2023 한국방사성폐기물학회 학술논문요약집 Vol.21 No.2
The Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science has developed certified reference materials (concrete, soil, and metal radioactive liquid) for measuring gamma-emitting radionuclides to improve and maintain the quality assurance and quality control of the radioactivity measurement in decommissioning nuclear power plants. The raw materials that make up each CRM were mixed in an appropriate ratio with radionuclides. For certification and homogeneity assessment, 10 bottles were randomly selected, two sub-samples were collected from each bottle, and radionuclides were measured via HPGe gamma spectrometry. The results of the homogeneity tests using a one-way analysis of variance on the radionuclides in the CRMs fulfilled the requirements of ISO Guide 35. Coincidence summing and self-absorption correction were performed on measurement results by introducing the Monte Carlo efficiency transfer code and Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code. In concrete analysis, the reference values for five radionuclides (60Co, 241Am, 134Cs, and 137Cs) in the CRM were in the range of 15-40 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 10% (k = 2). In soil analysis, the reference values for the 137Cs and 60Co were 118.7 and 124.4 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 10% (k = 2). In metal radioactive liquid analysis, the reference values for 134Cs, 137Cs and 60Co in the CRM were in the range of 200-270 Bq/kg, and the expanded uncertainty was within 7% (k = 2).

Identification of novel probiotic strains is of great interest in the field of functional foods. Specific strains of heat-killed bacteria have been reported to exert immunomodulatory effects. Herein, we investigated the immune-stimulatory function of heat-killed Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 13314BP (LBP). Treatment with LBP significantly increased the production of TNF-α and IL-6 by macrophages. More importantly, LBP was able to enhance the phagocytic activity of macrophages against bacterial particles. Activation of p38, JNK, ERK, NF-κB, and STAT3 was involved in the immunomodulatory function of LBP. LBP treatment significantly increased production of TNF-α by bone marrow-derived macrophages and splenocytes, further confirming the immunostimulatory effect of LBP in primary immune cells. Interestingly, the immunomodulatory effects of LBP were much stronger than those of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, a well-known probiotic strain. These results indicate that LBP can be a promising immune-enhancing functional food agent.
WS₂ Hollow Sphere Doped by Platinum for High Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
Minju Chae(채민주),Sujung Suh(서수정),Hanyoung Jung(정한영) 한국신재생에너지학회 2021 한국신재생에너지학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.7
Hydrogen is considered an excellent replacement fuel for the efficient and environmentally friendly production of energy. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have unique catalytic properties and are earth-abundant, which would allow the production of hydrogen in a facile and low-cost manner. WS2 is a stable and highly active catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Hollow sphere WS2 nanosheets were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal synthesis, and the prepared WS2 was doped with a platinum chloride solution to enhance HER performance. The diameters of the WS2 hollow spheres were in the range for 400 nm to 2 ㎛, and exhibited an overpotential of 210 mV. The Pt-doped WS2 exhibited an overpotential of 73 mV, which was lower than that of WS2 hollow sphere. Therefore, Pt-doped WS2 is an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. XRD was performed to confirm the crystal structures of the prepared materials. The morphology and composition of the materials were analyzed by SEM and EDS. Raman spectroscopy and TEM were performed to determine the structures and sizes of the materials. The chemical composition was confirmed by XPS.

With the recent increase in imaging tests, coexisting abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs) are being discovered accidentally. We report two cases of simultaneous endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for AAA and TAA. Both 74-year-old and 79-year-old male with infrarenal AAA and saccular TAA were treated simultaneously with EVAR and TEVAR. Saccular TAAs were identified in the upper thoracic aorta during the evaluation of AAA. During endograft placement, carotid-subclavian bypass and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage were performed. Both patients were successfully discharged without spinal cord ischemia. Simultaneous EVAR and TEVAR can be considered for patients with AAA and saccular TAA in the upper thoracic aorta. Moreover, CSF drainage may be necessary to protect the spinal cord.
Modulating Ion Transport and Self-Assembly of Polymer Electrolytes via End-Group Chemistry
Jung, Ha Young,Mandal, Prithwiraj,Jo, Gyuha,Kim, Onnuri,Kim, Minju,Kwak, Kyungwon,Park, Moon Jeong American Chemical Society 2017 Macromolecules Vol.50 No.8
<P>We report a rational design of solid-state dry polymer electrolytes with high conductivity, high mechanical strength, and improved cation transference number. Thiol ene click chemistry provided orthogonal control over the type and number of end groups in poly(styrene-b-ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) block copolymers. This approach permitted the synthesis of PEO chains with reduced crystallinity, reminiscent of PEO oligomers, thereby playing a key role in improving the room temperature conductivity. Intriguingly, the incorporation of diol or dicarboxylic acid end groups in PS-b-PEO produced a well-defined gyroid structure, leading to order of magnitude improvements in the storage modulus. Out of the various samples examined, the electrolytes bearing terminal diol displayed the highest ionic conductivity and a 2 -fold increase in lithium transference number. The improvements in performance are attributed to the reduced interchain aggregation and the anion stabilization mediated by the terminal diol group. The fact that the dramatic changes in ion transport and mechanical properties of PS-b-PEO samples were brought about solely by the modification of single terminal group of the PEO unit confirmed end-group chemistry as a powerful tool for the design of efficient solid-state polymer electrolytes. This work should find applications in various emerging electrochemical technologies, namely those employed in energy storage and conversion.</P>
