Mechanically enhanced supramolecular carbon nanotube (CNT) films were prepared in water by employing the π-electronrich phenyl, naphthalenyl, and pyrenyl end-functionalized polyethylene oxides (PEOs) as supramolecular linkers, followed by vacuum filtration. Among them, the supramolecular CNT film produced by the pyrenyl end-functionalized PEO (PEOPy) exhibited the highest mechanical strength, which was ~ 1.5–2 times higher than that of the CNT films produced using the typical dispersant, Triton X-100, although the functionality of PEO-Py was lower than that prepared using other linkers, and the content of PEO-Py in the CNT films was lower than that obtained using Triton X-100. Fluorescence and UV–Vis spectroscopy demonstrated that the improved mechanical properties of the supramolecular CNT film result from the formation of π–π interactions between the CNT and the pyrene moieties of the PEO-Py linker. Finally, the supramolecular CNT film exhibited a 40–50 dB electromagnetic shielding efficiency through hybridization with silver nanowires.

This study was conducted to investigated the major characteristics of genetically modified rice of 'Milyang 204' originated from Dongjinbyeo compared to a non-transgenic rice varieties Dongjinbyeo and Jun-ambyeo. Basta resistant transgenic rice lines carrying bar gene produced by the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute were evaluated for their agronomic characters. The transgenic Japonica rice of 'Milyang 204' showed inferior phenotypic traits compared to a non-transgenic rice variety Dongjinbyeo and Junambyeo. On the basis of UPOV (Union Internationale Pour la Protaection des Obtentions Vegetables) and NSMO(National Seed Management Office) the transgenic 'Milyang 204' showed difference in some traits out of some agronomic traits, such as leaf color, angle of flag leaf, number of spikelets, culm length, white core and white belly compared to the non-transgenic varieties rice.

Sulforaphane (1-isothiocyanato-4-(methylsulfinyl)-butane), belonging to a family of natural compounds that are abundant in broccoli, has received significant therapeutic interest in recent years. However, the molecular basis of its effects remains to be elucidated. In this study, we attempt to determine whether sulforaphane regulates the inflammatory response in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine asthma model. Mice were sensitized with OVA, treated with sulforaphane, and then challenged with OVA. Sulforaphane administration significantly alleviated the OVA-induced airway hyperresponsiveness to inhaled methacholine. Additionally, sulforaphane suppressed the increase in the levels of SOCS-3 and GATA-3 and IL-4 expression in the OVA-challenged mice. Collectively, our results demonstrate that sulforaphane regulates Th2 immune responses. This sutdy provides novel insights into the regulatory role of sulforaphane in allergen- induced Th2 inflammation and airway responses, which indicates its therapeutic potential for asthma and other allergic diseases. ( Jun-won Chung ),( Su Young Kim ),( Hee Jung Park ),( Chang Su Chung ),( Hee Woo Lee ),( Sun Mi Lee ),( Inki Kim ),( Jhang Ho Pak ),( Gin Hyug Lee ),( Jin-yong Jeong ) 대한간학회 2017 Gut and Liver Vol.11 No.5
Background/Aims: The increased resistance of Helico-bacter pylori to antibiotics has increased the need to develop new treatments for this bacterium. The aim of our study was to identify new drugs with anti-H. pylori activity. Methods: We screened a small molecule library―the library of pharmaco-logically active compounds (LOPAC), which includes 1,280 pharmacologically active compounds―to identify inhibitors of H. pylori growth. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of antibiotics against multidrug-resistant H. pylori strains were determined using the agar dilution method. Results: We identified diphenyleneiodonium (DPI) as a novel anti- H. pylori agent. The MIC values for DPI were <0.03 μg/mL against all tested H. pylori strains. DPI also exhibited strong antibacterial activity against common gram-negative and gram-positive pathogenic bacteria. Conclusions: DPI may be a candidate anti-H. pylori drug for future development. Expression of MicroRNA in Host Cells Infected with Helicobacter pylori
( Jun-won Chung ),( Seok Hoo Jeong ),( Sun Mi Lee ),( Jhang Ho Pak ),( Gin Hyug Lee ),( Jin-yong Jeong ),( Jin-ho Kim ) 대한간학회 2017 Gut and Liver Vol.11 No.3
Background/Aims: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression. We assess miRNA regulation by Helicobacter pylori infection and elucidate their role in H. pylori-infected gastric epithelial cells. Methods: The relationship between miRNA expression and DNA methylation was examined. Cells were treated with the nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) inhibitor Bay 11-7082 to determine the relationship between miRNA expression and NF-κB signal transduction. Results: In the negative control cells infected with H. pylori 26695, the expression of six miRNAs was increased, whereas the expression of five miRNAs was decreased. The expression of upregulated miRNAs was increased when the host cells were treated with H. pylori and an NF-κB inhibitor. miR-127-5p, -155, and -181 were associated with increased interleukin 6 (IL-6) secretion in H. pylori infected cells treated with anti-miRNA. The expression of miR-155, -127-5p, -195, -216, -206, and -488 increased by approximately 3-fold following treatment with the methylation inhibitor Aza. Conclusions: We found novel miRNAs in H. pylori-infected negative control cells using miRNA microarrays. Upregulated miRNA expression was inversely related to the transcription of NF-κB. miR-195 and miR-488 appear to play a pivotal role in controlling IL-6 activity in H. pylori infection. miRNA expression in H. pylori infection was affected by methylation. <P>A novel twinning-driven hyper-branching mechanism of 1-dimensional nanowires is demonstrated to provide a clear understanding of the growth behaviour of a complex nanocrystal structure. Specifically, we have discovered that the multiple twinning mechanism can be successfully applied to the hyper-branching of nanowires. Systematic variations of TiO2 hyper-branching in terms of branching multiplicity, branching angle, and size were observed, depending on the sequence, the degree, and the combination of two different twinning modes of contact and interpenetration. The twinning process is a reliable synthetic protocol for next generation nanostructures which require highly complex, but predictable shape and symmetry.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>We have discovered that the multiple twinning mechanism can be successfully applied to the hyper-branching of TiO2 nanowires. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1jm11405k'> </P>
