To estimate the quality of the emergency medical services system of Wonju City, we studied the diurnal variations of 179 non-traumatic cardiac arrest victims who received cardiopulmonary reuscitation at the emergency center of Wonju Christian Hospital. Diurnal variations of non-traumatic cardiac arrest patients were as follows ; The occurence of cardiac arrest at day-time was higher than night-time; 18 cases (11%) from midnight to AM 4, 25 cases (14%) from AM 4 to AM 8, 42 cases (24%) from AM 8 to AM 12, 46 cases (25%) from AM 12 to PM 4, 35 cases (19%) from PM 4 to PM 8, 13 cases (7%) from PM 8 to midnight. Witness cardiac arrest was increased more during the day than night ; 40% from midnight to AM 4, 48% from AM 4 to AM 8, 57% from AM 8 to AM 12.52% from AM 12 to PM 4, 60% from PM 4 to PM 8, 38% from PM 8 to midnight. The transportation time at night-time cardiac arrest was more longer than day-time cardiac arrest ; 30±12mins from midnight to AM 4, 26±9mins from AM 4 to AM 8, 27±12mins AM 8 to Am 12, 25±11mins from AM 12 to PM 4, 25±9mins from PM 4 to PM 8, 35±15mins from PM 8 to midnight. The rate of restoration of spontaneous circulation(ROSC) in day-time cardiac arrest was higher than the night-time cardiac arrest ; 30% from midnight to AM 4, 36% from AM 4 to AM 8, 32% AM 8 to AM 12, 44% from AM 12 to PM 4, 41% from PM 4 to PM 8, 15% from PM 8 to midnight. The survival rate of cardiac arrest has been correlated with collapse time, early bystander CPR, early advanced care. To improve outcome for prehospital cardiac arrest, we concluded that early bystander CPR, and early advanced life support should be performed at the scene and during the transportation especially at night.
Methyleugenol reduces cerebral ischemic injury by suppression of oxidative injury and inflammation

<P>The present study tested the cytoprotective effect of methyleugenol in an <I>in vivo</I> ischemia model (i.e. middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 1.5 h and subsequent reperfusion for 24 h) and further investigated its mechanism of action in <I>in vitro</I> cerebral ischemic models. When applied shortly after reperfusion, methyleugenol largely reduced cerebral ischemic injury. Methyleugenol decreased the caspase-3 activation and death of cultured cerebral cortical neurons caused by oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) for 1 h and subsequent re-oxygenation for 24 h. Methyleugenol markedly reduced superoxide generation in the ischemic brain and decreased the intracellular oxidative stress caused by OGD/re-oxygenation. It was found that methyleugenol elevated the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase. Further, methyleugenol inhibited the production of nitric oxide and decreased the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase. Methyleugenol down-regulated the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the ischemic brain as well as in immunostimulated mixed glial cells. The results indicate that methyleugenol could be useful for the treatment of ischemia/inflammation-related diseases.</P>
Tumor Size Measurement and Feature Point Extraction Using an Endoscope

Recently, a development of the medical instrument using the vision information is brisk. Especially, extracting the 3-dimension information from 2-dimension image is the one of the major research topics. This paper proposes the method to measure tumor size by the 3-dimension information extraction, the triangulation using the extracted 3-dimension information and the camera geometry. To extract the 3-dimension information, the Hough circle transform and triangulation are used. The Hough circle transform is used to extract a feature point from tumor models for the 3-dimension information recovery. An extracted feature point is used for recovering the depth information from the 2-dimension tumor stereo images. A tumor size measurement is done by triangulation using the depth information and camera internal parameters. Matlab and Visual C++ are used for simulation.

We isolated many genes induced from pepper cDNA microarray data following their infection with the soybean pustule pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines 8ra. A full-length cDNA clone of the Capsicum annuum ankyrin-repeat domain $C_3H_1$ zinc finger protein (CaKR1) was identified in a chili pepper using the expressed sequence tag (EST) database. The deduced amino acid sequence of CaKR1 showed a significant sequence similarity (46%) to the ankyrin-repeat protein in very diverse family of proteins of Arabidopsis. The gene was induced in response to various biotic and abiotic stresses in the pepper leaves, as well as by an incompatible pathogen, such as salicylic acid (SA) and ethephon. CaKR1 expression was highest in the root and flower, and its expression was induced by treatment with agents such as NaCl and methyl viologen, as well as by cold stresses. These results showed that CaKR1 fusion with soluble, modified green fluorescent protein (smGFP) was localized to the cytosol in Arabidopsis protoplasts, suggesting that CaKR1 might be involved in responses to both biotic and abiotic stresses in pepper plants.

Potato blackleg disease caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (Eca) has been a serious problem in Korea. Bactericidal activities of twelve bactericides including antibiotics, copper compounds and oxolinic acid were examined in vitro. Streptomycin, streptomycin sulfate, and oxolinic acid effectively controlled the pathogen at 0.02 mM. However, the pathogen developed resistance to the applied bactericides after 72 hours of incubation. Activity of copper compounds such as copper hydroxide, copper oxide and copper sulfate was lower than that of antibiotics. However, the pathogen did not develop resistant to them. Combinations of streptomycin (0.016 mM, 9.3 ppm)+copper oxide (1.2 mM, 171.6 ppm)/copper hydroxide (1.5 mM, 146.3 ppm); streptomycin sulfate (0.005 mM, 7.0 ppm)+copper oxide (1.2 mM, 171.6ppm)/copper hydroxide (1.5 mM, 146.3 ppm) were found to be effective for the control of E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica.

Potato blackleg disease caused by Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica has been a serious problem in Korea. It was previously reported that four mixtures [streptomycin (9.3 ppm) + copper oxide (171.6 ppm)/copper hydroxide (146.3 ppm), streptomycin sulfate (7.0 ppm) + copper oxide (171.6ppm)/copper hydroxide (146.3 ppm)] were effective for the control of E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica. in in vitro test. Using those four mixtures and two antibiotics [streptomycin (81.4 ppm) and streptomycin sulfate (61.3 ppm)], the effectiveness of control for E. carotovora subsp. atroseptica. was conducted in the field. Two antibiotics showed over 60% of control efficacy under different soil conditions, while mixtures of two antibiotics with copper compounds did not show any control effects on the infected seed potato. Two mixtures [streptomycin (27.9 ppm) + copper hydroxide (438.9 ppm), streptomycin sulfate (21.0 ppm) + copper oxide (514.8 ppm)] were effective in the control of potato blackleg disease on the infected potato plants under different climate conditions.
