Successful alveolar ridge augmentation by distraction osteogenesis method has been reported previously. There are several types of devices for alveolar ridge augmentation. In this paper, a new intraoral distraction device was used on the severe atrophic mandible in order to distract an alveolar ridge vertically in 5 patients. Mean amount of distracted alveolar ridge was 7.4㎜ (5∼9.5㎜). Dental implants were placed in the distracted alveolar bone and good osseointegration was obtained in all patients. Mean follow up period is 2years 6months (7months∼4years 9months). No complications, such as infection or resorption was observed in all patients. Alveolar ridge augmentation by gradual distraction seems to be a safe, simple and reliable procedure.

Five adults (3 cases of bilateral posterior crossbite, 2 cases of unilateral posterior crossbite) with intermaxillary discrepancy of over 5㎜ due to maxillary transverse deficiency were treated by surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). Bilateral maxillary horizontal osteotomies, osteotomies of pterygomaxillary junction and anterior lateral nasal wall, ans anterior palatal osteotomy were performed in 4 cases, and unilateral osteotomies in 1case, followed by palatal expansion with tooth-borne orthopedic applicance. No significant complication was observed. The mean palatal expansion was 7.2㎜ (5.8∼10.0㎜) in the maxillary first molar region. During the mean follow-up period of 4 years (5 months∼8 years 7 months), no recurrence of crossbite was observed in all cases. The SARME seemed to be a simple, stable, and reliable procedure for achieving a permanent increase of over 5㎜ in skeletal maxillary transverse width of adults.

영상으로부터 물체의 깊이를 추출하는 방법은 structured light, texture, stereo, focusing 등의 방법이 사용되고 있는데 본 논문에서는 focusing을 이용하여 물체의 깊이정보를 획득하는 알고리즘을 논의하였다. 기존의 stereo 방식은 서로 다른 위치에서 얻어진 두 장의 영상 사이의 관계를 해석하여 3차원 정보를 얻는다. 그러나 이 방법은 두 영상간의 대응 관계를 정하는 알고리즘이 매우 복잡하며, 일치되는 대응점을 구하지 못하면 3차원 거리를 구할 수 없다는 단점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이와 같은 대응점의 문제가 발생하지 않고 초점으로부터 비교적 정확한 깊이정보를 획득할 수 있는 DFF(Depth From Focus)에 대해 논하고 실험을 통하여 효과적으로 3차원 정보를 추출함을 보였다.

In general cases, the conventional internet connected to a terrestrial network is transmit too large medical images. To overcome this low speed transmitting rate problem of the internet, we have studied about an image division communication system as a fast telemedicine system. The image division communication system was 5-10 times faster than the conventional terrestrial internet link. Also we have developed a Web-based telemedicine system that can access every permitted server of hospitals via the internet. Visual Basic and C++, ASP programming techniques were used to make our system and it can access and retrieve medical information and image through only public web browse such as internet explorer without additional specific tools. To increase the transmitting speed of our telemedicine system, JPEG method was used. In conclusion, we were able to develop a fast and public telemedicine system using the proposed image division communication system and Web technology. image division communication system technology increased the speed of the conventional internet and Web technology extended the scope of use for telemedicine system from intrahospital to public use.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the palate is the most common of all intraoral salivary tumors. It can occur at any age but it presents most commonly in the 40∼60 age group, and there is no significant sex preponderance. It grows slowly and is usually painless, firm, well-circumscribed nodule. Because of high rate of recurrence, extra-capsular excision including the overlying mucosa and margin of normal tissue is recommended. We report 10 cases of palatal pelomorphic adenoma which have been successfully treated by extra-capsular excision. The surgical defects smaller than 3㎝ in diameter were covered with palatal acrylic splint for the secondary healing. The larger defects were repaired using palatal island flap in 3 cases, rotation flap and buccal fat graft in each 1 case. No patient showed any recurrence or malignant change during the mean follow-up period of 4 years and 9 months. These repair methods seem to be simple, reliable and uncomplicated procedures in the palatal surgical defects.

<P>As a solution to the high speed, ultralow power, and extremely compact ADC circuit block, a complementary single-electron transistor (SET)/CMOS hybrid amplifier-based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is proposed. It is implemented with a physics-based SPICE model including nonideal effects in real Si-based SET<SUB>s</SUB> such as the tunnel barrier lowering effect, parasitic MOSFET<SUB>s</SUB> operation, and the phase shift of Coulomb oscillation by the bias of a gate other than a main control gate. Its core scheme is the combination of both the amplification of SET current by MOSFET<SUB>s</SUB> and the suppression of a Coulomb blockade oscillation valley current by the differential amplification. In addition, the transient operation of SET/CMOS hybrid circuit-based ADC<SUB>s</SUB> fully accounting for nonideal effects of real SET<SUB>s</SUB> is successfully demonstrated for the first time. Compared with the previous SET-based ADC<SUB>s</SUB>, our ADC makes features of the immunity to nonideal effects, large voltage swing of the output signal, and high load drivability.</P>

<P>Maternal stress during pregnancy affects negative impact on health of offspring. In the present study, we compared the effects of maternal treadmill exercise and offspring treadmill exercise on prenatal stress-induced apoptosis and serotonin expression in offspring. Stress to the pregnant rats was induced by exposure of maternal rats to the hunting dog in an enclosed room. Exposure time was 10 min, three times per day, with a 1-h interval between exposures. This regimen was maintained from the seventh day of gestation until delivery. The pregnant rats in the exercise group were forced to run on a motorized tread-mill for 30 min once a day, started 7 days after pregnancy until delivery. The offspring in the exercise group were forced to run on a motorized treadmill for 30 min once a day, started 4 weeks after birth for 4 weeks. In the present results, offspring exposed to prenatal stress exhibited lower Bcl-2 level and higher Bax level in the hippocampus, lower 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH) expression in the dorsal raphe, and higher c-Fos expression in the locus coeruleus compared to age-matched control rats. Treadmill exercise of offspring suppressed Bax expression and enhanced Bcl-2 expression in the hippocampus, increased 5-HT and TPH expression in the dorsal raphe, and enhanced c-Fos expression in the locus coeruleus of offspring. Tread-mill exercise of offspring suppressed prenatal stress-induced apoptosis and normalized prenatal stress-induced alterations in serotonin synthesis and neuronal activation. However maternal treadmill exercise during pregnancy exerted no significant effect on offspring.</P>
