We described three cases of immediate reimplantation of a frozen-thawed autogenous mandible composed of a mixture of iliac bone, marrow, and particulate hydroxyapatite in tumors of the mandible. Acceptable outcomes were obtained in three patients who underwent immediate autogenous mandibular graft reconstruction. The conditions leading to successful outcome of the procedure are also discussed. Reimplantation of frozen autogenous lesioned mandible was performed in three patients with mandibular tumors. Two reimplanted grafts survived without complications following surgery. One case had postoperative infection that resolved with appropriate antibiotic treatment. There were no recurrences of the primary lesions. Satisfactory facial contour after surgery was achieved. These results are most promising, and we believe that, with further refinement, this technique will offer a new and acceptable modality for facial reconstruction in patients with cancer.

An azoinitiator linked to an epoxy oligomer, which could easily diffuse into the organoclay gallery and swell it, was used as an initiator to enhance the delamination of an organoclay, Cloisite 25A, in a matrix of styrenic polymers, poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) and polystyrene, during the preparation of a nanocomposite via an in-situ polymerization method. X-ray diffraction results and transmission electron microscopic observation of the morphology showed that the epoxy segment enhanced not only the delamination but also the extrication of ammonium cations from the organoclay gallery into the polymer matrix. The latter phenomenon induced the structural change of the alkyl group of ammonium cations in the gallery from a bilayer to monolayer structure, and also decreased the glass-rubber transition temperature as measured by a differential scanning calorimeter and dynamic mechanical analyzer.

<P>Blueberry cultivars have traditionally been identified based on the evaluation of sets of morphological characters; however, distinguishing closely related cultivars remains difficult. In the present study, we developed DNA markers for the genetic fingerprinting of 45 blueberry cultivars, including 31 cultivars introduced from the United States Department of Agriculture. We obtained 210 random amplified of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers using 43 different primers. The number of polymorphic bands ranged from three (OPG-10 and OPQ-04) to eight (OPR-16), with an average of five. A cluster analysis performed with the unweighted pair group method using arithmetic averages produced genetic similarity values among the blueberry cultivars ranging from 0.53 to 0.85, with an average similarity of 0.68. A dendrogram clustered the 45 blueberry cultivars into two main clusters, with a similarity value of 0.65. Cluster I consisted of four rabbiteye cultivars (Pink Lemonade, Alapaha, Titan, and Vernon) and the Ashworth northern highbush cultivar. Cluster II consisted of 31 northern highbush cultivars, eight southern highbush blueberry cultivars, and Northland half-highbush blueberry cultivar. Fifty five RAPD fragments selected were sequenced to develop sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) markers, resulting in the successful conversion of 16 of 55 fragments into SCAR markers. An amplified polymorphic band has the same size as the RAPD fragment or smaller according to the primer combinations in the 16 SCAR markers. Among these markers, a combination of 11 SCAR markers provided sufficient polymorphisms to distinguish the blueberry cultivars investigated in this study. These newly developed markers could be a fast and reliable tool to identify blueberry cultivars.</P>
Insights into the Roles of Prebiotics and Probiotics in the Large Intestine

현재까지 밝혀진 사실에 의하면 지구상에는 55개 phylum의 bacteria와 13개 phylum의 archaea가 존재하여 총68개 phylum 있으며, 대장에는 9개 phylum의 미생물이 존재하여 일반 토양환경이나 해양환경에 비하여 상대적으로 낮은 미생물 다양성을 가지고 있다. 장내 미생물의 다양성은 Host의 고유특성(genetic background, sex, age, immune system, gut motility)과 식이(nondigestible carbohydrates fat, prebiotics or probiotics), 항생제 섭취 등으로 인하여 영향 받으며, 이러한 영향이 에너지 저장 과정과 유전자 발현을 영향을 주고 나아가 비만과 같은 대사질환에 영향을 미친다. Probiotics는 숙주의 장내 균총을 개선하여 건강에 유익함을 줄 수 있는 살아있는 미생물을 말하며, 주로 lactic acid bacteria들이 이용되어 왔다. 최근 probiotics를 이용한 설사나 과민성대장증후군 등과 같은 질병 치료를 위하여 bacteriotherapy가 활용되고 있다. Prebiotics는 장내 미생물을 선택적으로 조절할 수 있는 식품 성분으로 inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides, galacto-oligosaccharides, lactulose 등이 이용되고 있으며, 최근에는 비만, 항암과 관련하여 대장 내 식이섬유소의 이용과 단쇄지방산(short-chain fatty acids) 생산에 대한 관심이 집중되고 있다. 다양한 nondigestible carbohydrates와 prebiotics, probiotics에 의해서 조절되는 대장 내 특정미생물 종을 규명하고, 이들 미생물 종이 생산하는 단쇄지방산과 같은 대사산물들과 질병과의 연관성 규명하는 대장 미생물 연구가 더욱 필요하다. According to facts revealed up until the present, there are a total of 68 known phyla on earth, including 55 phyla of bacteria and 13 phyla of archaea. The human large intestine has 9 phyla of microorganisms, which is a relatively lower diversity compared to the general environments of soil or sea. The diversity of intestinal microorganisms is affected by the characteristics of the host (genetic background, sex, age, immune system, and gut motility), the diet (non-digestible carbohydrates, fat, prebiotics, probiotics), and the intake of antibiotics, which in turn have an effect on energy storage processes, gene expressions, and even metabolic diseases like obesity. Probiotics are referred to as living microorganisms that improve the intestinal microbiota and contribute to the health of the host; in addition, probiotics usually comprise lactic acid bacteria. Recently, bacteriotherapy using probiotics has been utilized to treat sicknesses like diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome. Prebiotics are a food ingredient which can selectively adjust intestinal microorganisms and which comprise inulin, fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, and lactulose. In recent days, attention has been paid to the use of dietary cellulose in the large intestine and the production of short chain fatty acids (short-chain fatty acids) in relation to obesity and anticancer. More research into microorganisms in the large intestine is necessary to identify specific microorganism species, which are adjusted by diverse non-digestible carbohydrates, prebiotics, and probiotics in the large intestine and to understand the connection between sicknesses and metabolites like short chain fatty acids produced by these microorganism species.
Purification and Characterization of Recombinant Lipase Produced by Refolding System

We have previously cloned a novel-type bacterial lipase gene which is classified into lipase family I.1 based on the amino acid sequence similarities but into lipase family I.2 based on molecular weight (33 kDa) and active-sitemotif (GHSQG). When this gene was expressed under T7 promoter using aexpression vector, pET29a(+) in Escherichia coli (BL21 DE3), recombinant lipase was overproduced in an insoluble form. To obtain an active enzyme, after this protein was solubillized in the presence of 8 M urea, it was purified in aurea-denatured form by ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sepharose and refolded by removing urea in the presence of the Ca^(2+) ion. Gel filtration chromatography indicated that this refolded protein is monomeric. Analysis by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) revealed an molecular weight of 33 kDa for the purified protein. rPSL showed relatively broad substrate specificities. The optimum pH and temperature waspH 8.0 and 50℃, respectively. Th enzyme was stable in the range of pH 8-9and at below 50℃ in the presence of 5 mM CaCl₂. Among trhe p-nitrophenyl(PNP) esters tested the best substrate was PNP-myristate with Km and Vmax values of 44μM and 24 nM/min^(-1).

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>An artificial bifunctional enzyme, xylanase–cellulase, has been prepared by gene fusion. Three chimeric genes were constructed that encoded fusion proteins of different lengths. The fusion proteins exhibited both xylanase (XynX) and cellulase (Cel5Z::Ω) activity when <I>cel</I>5Z::Ω was fused downstream of <I>xyn</I>X, but not when <I>xyn</I>X was fused downstream of <I>cel</I>5Z::Ω. Activities of bifunctional enzymes decreased when a shorter xylanase peptide was fused. Three fusion enzymes were purified, and the molecular weights of the enzymes were estimated by CMC-SDS-PAGE and XYN-SDS-PAGE to be 149, 129, and 87kDa, respectively. The fusion enzymes displayed optimum cellulase activity at pH 8.0 and 50°C and optimum xylanase activity at pH 8.0 and 70°C.</P>
Development of Organic Material Recommendation System for Organic Rice Using Linear Programming

Fertilizer recommendation system (FRS) is a useful method for environmentally friendly agriculture. However, the conventional FRS does not deal with organic materials such as green manure and oilcake, which used for domestic organic farming. In this study, we developed an organic material recommendation system (OMRS) using linear programming. This procedure calculates the amount of organic material that maximizes the fertilizer effect under constraints such as N input range and C/N ratio. A combination of two organic materials, including green manure etc., is considered. The procedure was tested in the R statistic program using lp_solve, a library for the mixed integer linear programming solver. Application of this model increased rice yield index than standard rate of fertilizer. This program was also implemented to Korea Soil Information System. This system will be useful for farmers to make decisions that meet their specific needs, such as organic resources, crop nutrient requirements, and environmental regulatory policies.

A 23-year old woman was admitted to our hospital with hemoptysis. The chest X-ray showed reticulonodular opacity and multiple cysts throughout the entire lung field. The chest CT scan revealed numerous bilateral cysts with various sizes, some of them with thickened walls. An open lung wedge resection was performed. The resected specimen showed scattered small nodules, 0.3 to 0.6 cm in size. Microscopically, each nodule was composed of atypical glands with an occasional papillary architecture spreading to the alveolar septa, which were morphologically consistent with a papillary adenocarcinoma with a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma growth pattern. Immunochemically, the tumor cells were negative for the S-100 protein. The patient was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma of the lung. A variety of diseases can produce or mimic multiple, thin-walled cysts in the lung. Lung cancer with multiple cysts is quite rare. Nevertheless, adenocarcinoma should be a diagnostic consideration. We report a case of a multiple cystic adenocarcinoma of the lung.
