Vol.2 No.2

This paper presents emerging perspectives on lifelong education in this new knowledge era from an emerging global university, the UP Open University, the fifth constituent unit and cyber campus of the University of the Philippines system. Based on UPOU’s experience, lifelong learning will primarily be influenced by online learning. Online learning in the new era will be scalable and learner-centered. It will make use of mentors and coaches instead of instructors and tutors. Furthermore, lifelong learning in the new era will see a blurring of geographical, disciplinal and modal boundaries. With the global adoption of a lingua franca, English, transnational education will become predominant. Boundaries between and among discipline will likewise dissolve. Transdisciplinary education in the form of specialized programs that address specific workplace needs will become the norm. Strict boundaries between formal, nonformal and informal education; between basic, higher and technical vocational education will cease to exist with the provision of ladders, bridges and pathways between these educational modes. Additionally, programs will have multiple entry points and exit points. Another emerging trend is Open Education, which may manifest itself in educational governance approaches such as: open admissions; open ended timeframes for programs; and open access learning resources. Additionally, ubiquity will become a major trend in lifelong learning. One can learn at any place in any time with: mobile devices such as netbooks and mobile phones; cloud computing; and WiFi/ WiMAX services. Lastly, the paper establishes the shift on lifelong learning clientele. Before lifelong learning opportunities were targeted at the poorest of the poor, living in remote areas, where access is a primary issue. Lifelong learning was for the marginalized, the overaged and women whose cultures denied them equal access. Now, as a result of the emerging delivery systems the well off, the professional and the advanced student now avail of lifelong learning opportunities more than the marginalized

Log-concavity and zeros of the Alexander polynomial

Vol.51 No.2

We show that roots of log-concave Alexander knot polyno- mials are dense in C. This in particular implies that the log-concavity and Hoste’s conjecture on the Alexander polynomial of alternating knots are (essentially) independent.

      • Willful Blindness About Indigenous Peoples: The Democratic Deficit and Canadian Public Policy Making

        C. J. Alexander(C. J. Alexander ),Mallory Crew(Mallory Crew ) 한국캐나다학회 2011 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.17 No.1

Public policy officials, elected and appointed, continue to ignore the value dimensions of public policy making in ways that profoundly impact the individual and collective lives of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The au-thors examine two policy fields—health and communications—to highlight the peril of ignoring Indigenous cultural contexts. They conclude that the overarching policy of wilful blindness to Indigenous values, ways of being, and knowledge systems represents a continuation of the colonial mindset that has persisted since settlers arrived.

Progressive lysosomal membrane permeabilization induced by iron oxide nanoparticles drives hepatic cell autophagy and apoptosis

        Levada Kateryna,Pshenichnikov Stanislav,Omelyanchik Alexander,Rodionova Valeria,Nikitin Aleksey,Savchenko Alexander,Schetinin Igor,Zhukov Dmitry,Abakumov Maxim,Majouga Alexander,Lunova Mariia,Jirsa Mi 나노기술연구협의회 2020 Nano Convergence Vol.7 No.17

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONs) are frequently used in various biomedical applications, in particular as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents in liver imaging. Indeed, number of IONs have been withdrawn due to their poor clinical performance. Yet comprehensive understanding of their interactions with hepatocytes remains relatively limited. Here we investigated how iron oxide nanocubes (IO-cubes) and clusters of nanocubes (IO-clusters) affect distinct human hepatic cell lines. The viability of HepG2, Huh7 and Alexander cells was concentration-dependently decreased after exposure to either IO-cubes or IO-clusters. We found similar cytotoxicity levels in three cell lines triggered by both nanoparticle formulations. Our data indicate that different expression levels of Bcl-2 predispose cell death signaling mediated by nanoparticles. Both nanoparticles induced rather apoptosis than autophagy in HepG2. Contrary, IO-cubes and IO-clusters trigger distinct cell death signaling events in Alexander and Huh7 cells. Our data clarifies the mechanism by which cubic nanoparticles induce autophagic flux and the mechanism of subsequent toxicity. These findings imply that the cytotoxicity of ION-based contrast agents should be carefully considered, particularly in patients with liver diseases.

Linguistic modelling of gene regulation: translation from the language of experiments to the language of modelling

        Alexander V. Spirov,Ekaterina M. Myasnikova 한국통신학회 2019 ICT Express Vol.5 No.3

Understanding of gene regulation mechanisms is one of the main goals in systems biology of development. In this communication we introduce a biologically oriented approach to model gene regulation by explicitly involving all the available empirical data. The method is derived by further developing the family of diverse approaches known as fuzzy linguistic modelling (FLM) of gene action. FLM makes it possible to formulate in simple rules the known details of diverse and hierarchical gene-regulatory organization, i.e., to reword experimental conclusions formulated in the language of experimentalists into the language of model designers.

      • Gyroscope vs. accelerometer measurements of motion from wrist PPG during physical exercise

        Alexander J. Casson,Arturo Vazquez Galvez,Delaram Jarchi 한국통신학회 2016 ICT Express Vol.2 No.4

Many wearable devices include PPG (photoplethysmography) sensors for non-invasive heart rate monitoring. However, PPG signals are heavily corrupted by motion interference, and rely on simultaneous motion measurements to remove the interference. Accelerometers are used commonly, but cannot differentiate between acceleration due to movement and acceleration due to gravity. This paper compares measurements of motion using accelerometers and gyroscopes to give a more complete estimate of wrist motion. Results show the two sensor signals are very different, with low correlations present. When used in a wrist PPG heart rate algorithm gyroscope motion estimates obtain better performance in half of the cases.

The Zero Bound and the Term Structure in a Nonlinear Macroeconomic Model

2006 Seoul journal of economics Vol.19 No.1

The zero bound on nominal interest rates inherently imposes a nonlinearity on models in which money is nonneutral. However, for simplicity, analyses of the zero bound have typically been conducted in models which are otherwise linear. In a nonlinear staggered price-setting model, we examine how the zero bound makes the term structure of interest rates and macroeconomic dynamics sensitive to the economy's average inflation rate. We decompose this sensitivity into two components: (i) A pure expectations component, associated with the fact that the average inflation rate and the zero bound interact to affect the expected future path of short rates; and (ii) a term premium component, associated with the fact that the aforementioned interaction alters the behavior of the term premium. The first component is present in analyses where the zero bound is the only nonlinearity; the second component is absent in those analyses.

Glenoid Bone Loss in Shoulder Instability: Superiority of Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography over Two-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Established Methodology

        Alexander E Weber,Ioanna K Bolia,Andrew Horn,Diego Villacis,Reza Omid,James E Tibone,Eric White,George F Hatch 대한정형외과학회 2021 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.13 No.2

Background: Recent literature suggests that three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (3D MRI) can replace 3D computed tomography (3D CT) when evaluating glenoid bone loss in patients with shoulder instability. We aimed to examine if 2D MRI in conjunction with a validated predictive formula for assessment of glenoid height is equivalent to the gold standard 3D CT scans for patients with recurrent glenohumeral instability. Methods: Patients with recurrent shoulder instability and available imaging were retrospectively reviewed. Glenoid height on 3D CT and 2D MRI was measured by two blinded raters. Difference and equivalence testing were performed using a paired t -test and two one-sided tests, respectively. The interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to test for interrater reliability, and percent agreement between the measurements of one reviewer was used to assess intrarater reliability. Results: Using an equivalence margin of 1 mm, 3D CT and 2D MRI were found to be different (p = 0.123). The mean glenoid height was significantly different when measured on 2D MRI (39.09 ± 2.93 mm) compared to 3D CT (38.71 ± 2.89 mm) (p = 0.032). The mean glenoid width was significantly different between 3D CT (30.13 ± 2.43 mm) and 2D MRI (27.45 ± 1.72 mm) (p < 0.001). The 3D CT measurements had better interrater agreement (ICC, 0.91) than 2D MRI measurements (ICC, 0.8). intrarater agreement was also higher on CT. Conclusions: Measurements of glenoid height using 3D CT and 2D MRI with subsequent calculation of the glenoid width using a validated methodology were not equivalent, and 3D CT was superior. Based on the validated methods for the measurement of glenoid bone loss on advanced imaging studies, 3D CT study must be preferred over 2D MRI in order to estimate the amount of glenoid bone loss in candidates for shoulder stabilization surgery and to assist in surgical decision-making.

Assessment of New Religions: Implications for Christian Educators

2004 Journal of Christian education information tech Vol.0 No.5

This paper begins with definitions of new religions and suggests four areas of assessment when examining these movements. (1) the charismatic role of the leadership and the group, (2) the shared belief system of the group, (3) expectations of behavioral norms, and (4) the degree of social cohesiveness. The characteristics of both orthodox and heretical new religions are described. Included in the paper is a table, offered as a guide, for discering and assessing the nature of new religions. Based on his personal involvment with an American based new religion the writer shares observations covering 30 years (1971 to 2001). Finally, implications of the paper for Christian educators are presented as a four fold challenge; their tasks involve (1) communication, (2) understanding, (3) friendship, as well as (4) promoting critical reflection and discernment.
