      • Concepts and Methods of Large-scale Ecological Data Collection for a Citizen Science Project

        Collection of ecological data such as the temporo-spatial distribution of a species is very difficult, due to broad distribution over large areas, phenology, and lack of resources for field survey. Citizen science, which is a cooperative scientific endeavor between researchers and interested citizens, is ideal for collecting large-scale ecological data. However, lack of proper equipment, species identification, and/or communication between researchers and participants are hindrance for a successful citizen science project. Here, we introduce the concept and methods of large-scale ecological data collection using smartphone apps. Most of the ecological data typically consist of sound or video recording, picture, geographic coordinate, and notes. There are several apps that can collect some or all of these ecological data. Furthermore, the result of a survey can be reported to researchers using Google Docs. The data collected by non-specialists can be validated by cross-checking of the survey report by Google Docs and the ecological data sent by apps. Finally, we report the results of a citizen science project in which temporo-spatial distributions of cicada species in Korea were studied via smartphone apps and Google Docs.

        The Optimal Tumor Mutational Burden Cutoff Value as a Novel Marker for Predicting the Efficacy of Programmed Cell Death-1 Checkpoint Inhibitors in Advanced Gastric Cancer

        Purpose: The optimal tumor mutational burden (TMB) value for predicting treatment response to programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) checkpoint inhibitors in advanced gastric cancer (AGC) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the optimal TMB cutoff value that could predict the efficacy of PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors in AGC. Materials and Methods: Patients with AGC who received pembrolizumab or nivolumab between October 1, 2020, and July 27, 2021, at Samsung Medical Center in Korea were retrospectively analyzed. The TMB levels were measured using a next-generation sequencing assay. Based on receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the TMB cutoff value was determined. Results: A total 53 patients were analyzed. The TMB cutoff value for predicting the overall response rate (ORR) to PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors was defined as 13.31 mutations per megabase (mt/Mb) with 56% sensitivity and 95% specificity. Based on this definition, 7 (13.2%) patients were TMB-high (TMB-H). The ORR differed between the TMB-low (TMB-L) and TMB-H (8.7% vs. 71.4%, P=0.001). The progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) for 53 patients were 1.93 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.600–2.268) and 4.26 months (95% CI, 2.992–5.532). The median OS was longer in the TMB-H (20.8 months; 95% CI, 2.292–39.281) than in the TMB-L (3.31 months; 95% CI, 1.604–5.019; P=0.049). Conclusions: The TMB cutoff value for predicting treatment response in AGC patients who received PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor monotherapy as salvage treatment was 13.31 mt/Mb. When applying the programmed death ligand-1 status to TMB-H, patients who would benefit from PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors can be selected.

      • Chorus Dynamics and Acoustic Interaction in the Multi-species Cicada

        Five species of the subfamily Cicadinae are found in urban areas at the center of the Korean peninsula, including Cryptotympana atrata, Hyalessa fuscata, Meimuna mongolica, Meimuna opalifera and Graptopsaltria nigrofuscata. Out of those species, the densities of C. atrata and H. fuscata are generally high in the urban area. I hypothesized that there is a vigorous acoustic interaction where two species are abundant. We tested this hypothesis by conducting the 24-h recording experiments in four localities: Gwacheon(GC), Jamsil(JS), Ewha University(EU) and Yangpyeong(YP). Based on the preliminary enumeration surveys of exuviae, GC and JS were designated as high density localities and EU and JS were as low density localities. The results of 24-h recordings and abiotic factor based on the multinomial logistic regression showed that C. atrata and H. fuscata were negatively correlated in high density area GC and JS. In JS and EU, the density of H. fuscata is close to each other. However, the probability of chorusing in JS is significantly lower than EU. This might be due to acoustic competition between two species. Moreover, we confirmed that the choruses of males of C. atrata produced loud choruses usually during the day when temperature high and males of H. fuscata produced calling song throughout the day but peaked in the morning and night. Consequently, multi-species cicada in different temporal pattern probably cannot be explained by only acoustic interaction but the combination of both abiotic and biotic factors probably constrain multi-species cicada to call together during the limited time windows.

        링커십 진단도구 개발 및 타당화 연구

        본 연구의 목적은 링커십 개념 및 구성요소를 규명하고 이를 측정 가능한 진단도구를 개발하여 타당화하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 전문가 FGI를 구성하여 연구주제와 관련한 실제 경험과 사례를 공유, 논의하여 링커십의 개념, 구성요소, 질문항목 등을 도출하였다. 링커십은 사람과 사람을 연결해주는 역량을 의미하며, 연결해주는 목적에 따라 전략적 링커십, 관계적 링커십, 정보적 링커십으로 구분될 수 있다. 첫째, 전략적 링커십은 조직 상부의 비전을 하부 조직원에게 전파하거나 조직원의 요구 및 불만 사항을 상부에 전달시키는 역량을 의미한다. 둘째, 관계적 링커십은 조직구성원 간 관계에서 발생하는 갈등을 조율하고 원활한 상호작용이 이루어질 수 있도록 연결해주는 역량을 의미한다. 셋째, 정보적 링커십은 지식과 정보를 필요로 하는 조직구성원에게 전달하거나 관련된 사람을 연결해줌으로써 지식과 정보의 공유가 원활하게 일어날 수 있도록 연결해주는 역량을 의미한다. 이러한 개념을 바탕으로 전문가 FGI를 통하여 16문항을 개발하였으며, 탐색적 요인분석 및 확인적 요인분석을 통해 신뢰도와 타당도를 검증하였다. 오늘날 조직구성원 간 상호 연결하는 역량이 중요함에도 불구하고 이와 관련한 개념 및 구성요소, 측정 도구가 부재한 상황이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 현업 및 학계 전문가의 의견과 실제 사례를 기반으로 링커십의 개념과 구성요소를 규명하고 진단 도구를 개발하였다는데 의미가 있다. The purpose of this study is to clarify the concepts and components of the Linkership, and to develop the instrument. The Focus Group Interview (FGI) with experts in both academia and industry was conducted to identify concepts, components, and answer questions about Linkership. Linkership refers to the ability to connect people with various purposes, and it could be differentiated from other schemes by three concepts: strategic, relational and informative linkage. First, the strategic linkership can be defined as the linking ability to disseminate vision and intention of the higher level of an organization to the lower levels, and to hand over customer feedback, needs, and grievances of frontline employees to the higher level of the organization for strategic purposes. Second, the relational linkership could refer to the ability to manage relational issues with organizational members or stakeholders. Lastly, the informative linkership can be referred to as the ability to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and information by linking ‘knowledge demanders’ with ‘knowledge holders’. Based on the concept, this study developed the initial sixteen survey items with the FGI, and verified the reliability and validity of the items with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis.

      • Handwriting Gesture Recognition using Accelerometers

        In this paper, we present an accelerometer-based gesture recognition system, and the results from experiments of applying it for classifying 26 handwritten English alphabets. Large number of complex patterns incurs a problem of high user-dependency. To tackle the problem, we made our system as an adaptive learner so that user-specific recognizers can easily be constructed by incremental learning. Our preliminary results on handwriting gestures showed that our adaptive approach incrementally improves the performance of gesture recognizers and exhibited more stable performance than non-adaptive approach.

        <P>Short alpha/beta-peptides that consist of alternating L-a-amino acids and trans-2-aminocyclopentanecarboxylic acid are known to adopt both 11- and 14/15-helical conformations in solution. We report short alpha/beta-depsipeptides containing (S)-lactic acid as the third residue from the N-terminus. The alpha/beta-depsipeptide pentamers and heptamers adopt 14/15-helical conformations analogous to the a-helix in the crystal state and display 14/15-helical conformations predominantly in solution.</P>

      • Flexible Electronics용 Sn-58Bi 저온 솔더 특성에 미치는 W 나노 입자의 영향

        마이크로/나노 전자 소자의 고성능화, 융/복합화, 미세화가 급격하기 진행됨에 따라 칩과 기기를 하나의 시스템으로 구성하기 위한 패키징 기술은 그 중요성이 더욱 커지고 있다. 칩의 성능을 효과적으로 활용하기 위하여 다양한 패키징 기술이 개발되었고, 그 중에서 특히 칩과 기판 사이를 직접 적합하는 역할을 하는 솔더의 전기적/환경적 요구를 개선하기 위한 많은 연구가 진행되었다. 특히, Sn-58Bi는 가장 대표적으로 사용되는 저온 무연 솔더 소재는 flexible electronics나 wearable electronics 에 적용되고 있지만, 취성이 있어서 휨 변형이나 장기적인 신뢰성이 떨어진다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존 Sn-58Bi에 W 나노 입자를 첨가하여 금속학적, 기계적 특성을 개선하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 Sn-58Bi에 W 나노 입자의 첨가에 따른 젖음성, 퍼짐성, 미세조직, 인장강도, 연성 등의 물성 변화를 분석, 측정하였다. 실험 결과, Sn-58Bi의 microstructure가 미세화되는 경향을 확인하였고, 최적 나노 W 함량에서 Sn-58Bi에 비해, 인장강도 및 연성이 개선되었다. 이를 통해, W 나노 입자의 최적 첨가 결과에 확보에 따라, felxible electronics용 차세대 솔더로서의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다.

        Pre-bent Flow-Field Plates for Enhanced Performance in Flexible Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells in Curved Shape

        This article reports on a flexible polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with a pre-bent flow field. The performances in the flat and bent positions were lower and higher, respectively than that of the traditional flexible fuel cells. The low performance in the flat position was attributed to the void space induced incomplete contact at the interface of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and flow-field plates, which resulted in poor performance due to the high ohmic resistance (5.85 Ω cm2) and faradaic resistance (4.17 Ω cm2). However, when bending stress was applied to the MEA, a decreased ohmic resistance (0.954 Ω cm2), faradaic resistance (0.737 Ω cm2), and an enhanced power density (88.7 mW/cm2) were observed because of the improved interfacial contact property between the MEA and the flow-field plates from the increased compressive stress. These experimental results were further analyzed and visualized with aid of the finite element analysis. Despite the relatively low performance in the flat shape, the proposed pre-bent design of the flexible PEMFC possesses promising applicability especially in flexible electronics where the curved shapes are highly required.
