Eight minerals (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and Zn) were determined in Schizandra chinensis fruits and their infusions in Seoul. The average mineral contents per Schizandra chinensis fruits(100g) were K (966.08 mg), Mg (87.20 mg), Ca (15.19 mg), Mn (6.19 mg), Fe (3.99 mg), Zn (2.78 mg), Na (2.15 mg) and Cu (0.31 mg) respectively by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer. The quantity of K and Zn were found significantly higher in Korean fruits than the Chinese fruits (p<0.05). The other 6 minerals did not reveal remarkable difference. In the case of processed Schizandra chinensis tea, it had K (217 mg), Mg (20.40 mg), Ca (7.16 mg) , Na (2.95 mg), Mn (1.34 mg), Fe (0.95 mg), Zn (0.25 mg) and Cu (0.09 mg) per 100 g respectively. In extraction of Schizandra chinensis fruits, as it took a longer extraction time, and in a powder form rather than a raw form, it had a higher contents of minerals. When a powder type of Schizandra chinensis fruits was extracted for 24 hours at 25℃, the transfer rate appeared with Ca (36.27%), Mn (25.44%), K (22.43%), Zn (21.00%), Na (19.91%), Mg (19.55%) Cu (13.78%) and Fe (6.45%) respectively.

Transient mutism has been known as a rare complication following a posterior fossa approach to cerebellar tumors, although its pathophysiology remains unclear. Cerebellar mutism may be defined as a transient mutism occurring after a posterior fossa tumor approach in children with unimpaired consciousness, unimpaired symbolic functions, no detectable deficit of cranial nerves or peripheral organs of speech, and no lesions of long pathways in the course of the cranial nerves at the level of the brain stem. Forty two cases in children, and only two cases in adults have been found in the literature. We report a case of transient mutism with oropharyngeal apraxia after total excision of 4th ventricle choroid plexus papilloma in a S-year-old girl Postoperatively the patient becamg mute and refused food intake without disturbance of consciousness, of lower cranial nerve function. Computed tomography(CT) and magnetic resonance image(MRI) demonstrated no abnormal findings except the surgical lesion in the posterior fossa. The mutism tasted for 3 weeks, but she gradually became fluent. The mechanism of "cerebellar mutism" is briefly discussed with literature review.
Effects of Woo-Gui-Um on Aβ Toxicity and Memory Dysfunction in Mice

Objectives:Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by neuronal loss and extracellular senile plaque. Moreover, the cellular actions of β-amyloid (Aβ) play a causative role in the pathogenesis of AD. This study was designed to determine whether Woo-Gui-Um, a commonly used Korean herbal medicine, has the ability to protect cortical and hippocampal neurons against Aβ25-35 neurotoxicity Methods:In the present study, the authors investigated the preventative effects of the water extract of Woo-Gui-Um in a mouse model of AD. Memory impairment was induced by intraventricularly (i.c.v.) injecting Aβ25-35 peptides into mice. Woo-Gui-Um extract was then administered orally (p.o.) for 14 days. In addition, Aβ25-35 toxicity on the hippocampus was assessed immunohistochemically, by staining for Tau, MAP2, TUNEL, and Bax, and by performing an in vitro study in PC12 cells. Results:Woo-Gui-Um extract had an effect to improve learning ability and memory score in the water maze task. Woo-Gui-Um extract had significant neuroprotective effects in vivo against oxidative damage and apoptotic cell death of hippocampal neurons caused by i.c.v. Aβ25-35. In addition, Woo-Gui-Um extract was found to have a protective effect on Aβ25-35-induced apoptosis, and to promote neurite outgrowth of nerve growth factor (NGF)-differentiated PC12 cells. Conclusions:These results suggest that Woo-Gui-Um extract reduces memory impairment and Alzheimer’s dementia via an anti-apoptotic effect and by regulating Tau and MAP2 in the hippocampus. 서울시내 다중이용시설 냉각탑수의 레지오넬라균 분포 및 혈청학적 특징

In order to investigate the distribution of Legionella spp. from cooling tower waters of public establishments in Seoul, we examined the 637 cooling tower waters of public establishments(building 220, Hotel 111, Hospital 103, department and shopping centers 103, and others 110) from 1994 to 1998. Of 637 waters tested, the average detection rate of legionella in cooling tower waters of public establishments was 15.7% and according to the establishment, buildings 15.5%, hotels 11.7%, hospitals 12.6%, departments and shopping centers 19.4%, and others 20.0%. Of 637 waters tested, 17 waters(2.7%) were detected over 100,000 CFU/L, 54 waters(8.5%) 10,000∼100,000 CFU/L and 29 waters(4.6%) less than 10,000 CFU/L. Of 100 isolates from cooling towers of public establishments from 1994 to 1998, 95 isolates were L. pneumophila and of them, 83 isolates(87.4%) were serogroup 1. The estimated number of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 isolated from cooling tower waters of public establishments was 6.5×10 exp(4) CFU/L and that in serogroup 4 was 1.8×10 exp(4) CFU/L.
협대역 고반사 파장 필터 구현을 위한 폴리머 광도파로 에포다이즈드 격자

파장 투과 대역폭이 좁으면서도 반사율이 높은 파장 필터를 구현하기 위해서 격자의 반사율이 진행 방향을 따라 서서히 변하는 구조의 에포다이즈드 격자 구조를 폴리머 광도파로와 함께 제작하였다. 격자로 인한 유효 굴절률 변화가 $5{\times}10^{-4}$인 경우에 대하여 에포다이즈드 격자의 길이에 따른 반사율 변화를 설계하였으며 길이가 15 mm 이상이 되는 경우에 반사율이 99%에 도달함을 확인하였다. 길이가 서로 다른 여러 개의 격자를 제작하여 반사율, 3-dB 대역폭, 20-dB 대역폭을 측정하였으며, 격자 길이가 18 mm인 소자에서 95%의 반사율을 얻을 수 있었고, 이때 3-dB 대역폭은 0.28 nm, 그리고 20-dB 대역폭은 0.70 nm의 특성을 가짐을 확인하였다. Wavelength filters are essential components for selecting a certain wavelength channel of a WDM optical communication system. To realize wavelength filters with narrow bandwidth and high reflectivity, an apodized grating structure with length of 15 mm and index modulation of $5{\times}10^{-4}$ was designed. The device exhibited a reflectivity of 95%, 3-dB bandwidth of 0.28 nm, and 20-dB bandwidth of 0.70 nm on an 18 mm grating length.
