The 121 five-year-old Korean subjects of this study were divided in 3 groups based on their experience in learning a foreign language (English). A battery of tests was administered to measure spoken and written language ability and the 3 metalinguistic domains of Phonological, semantic, and syntactic awareness. Spoken language ability was positively correlated with semantic and syntactic awareness. The relative importance of each metalinguistic domain varied with level of written language development. Phonological awareness was the only predictor of decoding. Syntactic awareness and phonological awareness were significant variables in sentence comprehension. Metalinguistic ability was a better predictor of written language development than spoken language ability. Foreign language learning experience had an effect on syntactic awareness: low experience was superior to no experience, but high experience was not superior to low experience.

This study used reversed sex-typed programs as an educational tool to teach preschool children about varieties of sex roles. The subjects were 85 four - and five-year-old kindergarten children, half of whom were assigned to the experimental group and half to the control group. The children`s sex role stereotypes decreased after participation in reversed sex-typed programs. Girls` scores of sex role stereotypes were higher in terms of own sex and in child and adult activity but lower in terms of the opposite sex than those of boys. There were differences in the scores of sex-role stereotypes in terms of child activity and adult activity.

The purpose of this study was to develop early childhood science activities, which could be utilized as an extracurricular program in the day-care center. The program is based on the Constructivist theory(Piaget and Vygotsky) and the nation-wide survey data on the extracurricular programs and science activities in the day-care center. After the manuals for the program was monitored and corrected by the professionals, the application of each activities was empirically tested by the teachers in the day-care setting. The effects of the sample program(6 activities) were conducted using Tegano, Sawyers & Moran(1989)'s Scientific problem-solving scale and Lee(2001)'s Scientific attitude scale. Subject of thirty nine children were administered by the pre-test and post-test and experimental group participated the program for six weeks. The results showed that the program was effective for enhancement of scientific problem-solving ability and scientific attitude of young children in day-care setting.

This study examined the parents' perception to the establishment of educare center in local area. The subject were 1,313 mothers with zero to five-year-old children. The major findings were as follows : First, most mothers preferred chid care support center(40%), child care center for infant(38%), especially dual-career wives preferred child care center for infant, but house wives preferred chid care support center. Second, in the opinion of program center operated by part-time, the preferrance to the program operated by once a week or anytime tended to be high, and also dual-career wives preferred weekend program. Third, in the services of chid care support center, most mothers preferred the providence of free-playroom for kid, parent-child playroom. And child care/education information and chid care counseling were preferred by mothers. Finally, we proposed the new model of public educare center in local area in the basis of results.
