The Korean Home Management Association (KHMA), founded in 1977, is an integrative professional organization dedicated to improving the well-being of individuals, families, and communities through research, education, practice, and public policy. The KHMA is facing new challenges and opportunities since the area of home management in Korea has evolved into five distinct disciplines including family resource management, family studies, consumer science, child development, and housing studies. In this study, we aim to provide recommendations for KHMA’s strategic planning based on the results of a Delphi survey of 50 researchers along with a structured survey of 184 undergraduate students. The themes that emerged from the Delphi survey were the integrative nature of the KHMA, an emphasis on practice and policy, connection within the disciplines of home management, collaboration with other disciplines, and supporting new professionals and practitioners. The findings of this study show that the KHMA needs to consider changing the name of the organization and the journal because “home” and “management” do not sufficiently incorporate the research and practice that KHMA members do today. The survey participants noted that the current name sounds outdated and does not represent the expansion of the field toward communities and policy. This study is intended to contribute to KHMA’s strategic planning to prepare for the next 40 years of successful contributions to the well-being of individuals, families, and communities in Korea and across the globe.

The purpose of this research was to find out the research trends of the housing research articles in the Journal of Korean Home Management Association(JKHMA) during 1983-2006. There were 116 articles related to housing, which was more or less than 10% of 1,215 articles in the number of 84 editions from the first issue of 1983 to the end of 2006. Just 90 researchers had published their own research articles in the JKHMA. Two thirds of them published only one time and nearly 10 researchers were frequent publishers over 5 times. Two main focused housing subjects were psychological and behavioral aspects of housing and house planning. Over half of the housing articles used survey methods. The results imply that it is necessary to get more active researchers to publish articles in the JKHMA in order to keep the trends of and to develop the variety of research theme and research methods in housing as well as increase in the number of the articles.
