May Uprising has been passed 20 years. Composers have configurated it as music. There are many reasons. For example, praise the meaning of it, cherish the memory of sacrificed people, of feeling of debt to May Uprising. It was configurated in form of symphony, symphonic poem, prelude, opera, &-song, by many composers, who had various backgrounds. The representational mode was expressed variously by the genre, background of composers, time and political factor. Yun Isang' symphony Exemplum, in memoriam Kwangiu(l981) was composed firstly. As German-nationality composer Yun Isang could compose it without political influence. It was the 7 months later after the uprising. He expressed defeat, sorrow, his desire for justice and democracy of Korea, and appeal to continue fighting in his favored Hauptton technique. Lee Mn-soo' modem art-song In this hlay was composed 1981. It was difficult to speak out that openly in Korea at that time. He used a student s poem published in the university newspaper. The poem symbolized things. So, the music described atmosphere of that time in the style of expressionism like disharmonious compound chords, irregular rhythms, chromatic melodies. Kim Sun-chul's opera Mudeung-dungdung was supported by goverment's Culture-Tourism Department. It represented uprising realistically using various styles like Korean folk, Western counterpoint, and atonal as well as western tonal music. The latest work, Yooha Jeong's Cwangju Uprising was written in Korean court music, folk music, and western contemporary music styles. She experienced the uprising on the spot as an university student. It described Gwangju Uprising as ultimate victory of Gwangju Uprising spirit.
Vol.45 No.1

Objective : This study is aimed to describe our experience with performing hemicraniectomy for treating patients with malignant cerebral infarction. This study also aimed at describing the difference between our experience and that of the published articles. Methods : Ten patients who had anterior circulation territory cerebral infarction underwent decompressive hemi-craniectomy for treating their life threatening brain swelling between August 2004 and October 2007. We retrospectively ana-lyzed the patients’ medical records and radiological films and we described the patients’ clinical and radiological details. The outcomes were measured according to the case fatality rate at 2 weeks and the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 9 months. We compared our institution’s outcomes with the pooled analysis result of three randomized controlled trials (DESTINY,DECIMAL, HAMLET trial). Results : Nine men and one woman were included in this study. Their mean age was 61.5 ± 11.9years, and the mean National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission was 17.3 ± 6.0. Five patients died within 2 weeks after operation. Four patients had a mRS of 5 and one had a mRS of 4 at 9 months. Our series included elder patients (mean difference : 9.9~18.3 years) who had a low NIHSS score on admission (mean difference : -4.8~-6.8) as compared to that of the pooled analysis group. Our series revealed a higher proportion of an unfavorable outcome (mRS ≥4) compared to that of the pooled analysis results (p=0.01). No patient in our series would have been eligible, according to the inclusion criteria, for inclusion in the pooled analysis studies. Conclusion : We think that the higher proportion of an unfavorable out-come in our series was a consequence of the elder age of our patients.

Modern states frequently reveal the limitations of their capacity to cope with disasters, in contrast to the performance of competent non-state actors in times of crisis. States go through internal fragmentation and competition with non-state actors, and eventually come to construct complementary disaster management system. While building on the “state in society” approach in comparative politics, this article discusses the relationship between competent non-state actors and limited states in disaster management, which is encapsulated as “mutually constituitive relationship” between state and society. Through the case study on 921 earthquake in Taiwan, this article draws implications about collaborative disaster governance.
