Board of Director Diversity and Corporate Performance: The Case of South Korea
전희경,김효진 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2017 Asian International Studies Review Vol.18 No.2
Recent corporate governance scandals (such as those at Uber) have reemphasized the importance of proper oversight and monitoring to ensure sustainable corporate performance. While the issue of how to improve corporate governance is not a new one, we have seen a resurgence of interest in whether diversity – particularly at the board of director level – improves this oversight function and, ultimately, corporate performance. This paper contributes to the academic discussion on board of director diversity with a focus on gender diversity and introduces Korea as a subject of analysis given that corporate governance remains a key area of concern for the local market and that, despite having had a female president in its relatively short democratic history and launching the WomenCorporateDirectors Korea branch in 2016, it ranks last among OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) member states in terms of female representation on corporate boards. We contribute to the academic debate on the relationship between gender diversity on corporate boards and corporate performance by undertaking a comprehensive literature review on board diversity and corporate performance, introducing data on Korean boards of directors and generating testable hypotheses for future research.

Continued interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR)has led to a plethora of definitions, standards, and guidelines. While this has contributed to a rich and diversebody of literature, there is a pressing need for clarity onwhat CSR means in specific geographic contexts andhow these reflect stakeholder expectations. This is particularlythe case for firms, which are the objects of CSRevaluations and investment by socially responsible investors. To enhance an understanding of the global varietiesof CSR, this paper analyzes prominent definitionsof CSR in Korea, specifically those proposed by theKorea Economic Justice Institute (KEJI) and SustinvestCo., Ltd. By doing so, this paper will help articulate howCSR is conceptualized in Korea and how to situate thisvariety of CSR in a comparative context.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency, perceived importance and competence of pediatric emergency nursing practice (PENP) in nurses who cared for pediatric patients in the emergency department. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study analyzed 175 emergency department nurses caring for pediatric patients at 7 university hospitals with more than 500 beds, located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The measurement tool was modified from the Classification of Standard Nursing Activities to measure the frequency, importance of PENP, and nursing competence. It comprised 143 items in 16 domains of PENP. Results: The most frequent nursing practice was the domain of ‘nursing records and environmentalmanagement’ and the least frequent practice was the ‘research and consulting’ domain. The nursing care domain perceived to be most important by nurses was ‘specialized intensive nursing care’. The nursing care domain with the highest level of nursing competence was ‘hygiene care’, and the domain with the least level of nursing competence was the ‘research and consulting’. Conclusion: These results will be utilized as basic data for future pediatric emergency nursing education initiatives and for establishing priorities of nursing policy to improve health care for children admitted to the emergency department.
