선진국 환경시료은행의 특성 분석을 통한 국가환경시료은행의 발전방안

환경시료은행은 환경질(environmental quality)의 시공간적 변화를 모니터링 하는 역할 뿐 아니라 시료 자체를 장기 보존함으로써 후세에 과거의 환경을 직접적으로 검증할 수 있는 기회를 부여하는 기능을 가지고 있다. 이를 위해서 다양한 생태계의 환경을 대표할 수 있는 선정된 시료를 엄격하게 규정된 채취방법에 따라 채취하여 성분변화가 일어나지 않는 초저온상태에서 장기간 보관함으로써 미래 시점에서 회고적 분석(retrospective analysis)을 수행할 수 있는 시설이 요구된다. 선진국에서는 이미 30여 년 전부터 환경정책의 실효성을 입증하거나 시대별 환경배경농도의 변화를 모니터링 하기 위해 다양한 환경시료를 저장해 오고 있다. 우리나라에서 2009년 자동화된 초저온 저장시설을 갖춘 국가환경시료은행이 국립환경과학원의 연구진에 의해 설립되었다. 이를 계기로 선진국의 시료은행 운영 경험을 발전시켜 단시간 내에 정상궤도에 안착시키려는 노력을 경주하고 있다. 아울러 그간 선진국의 운영 사례를 분석하고 이를 토대로 작성된 표준운영절차(SOP)에 따라 시험연구를 진행하고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 도출된 문제점을 분석하고 개선함으로 환경을 대표하는 시료의 저장 및 분석이라는 기본적인 기능에 충실한 수행체계를 갖추어 나가고 있다. 그러나 이와 동시에 환경시료은행의 기능을 적극 응용하여 독자적 부가기능을 부여하는 청사진이 제시되고 이에 대한 실행방안도 요구되는 상황이다. 이를 계기로 국가환경시료은행이 명실공히 국제적인 환경기구로 인정받는 도약의 발판을 마련해야 할 것이다. The ESBs (Environmental Specimen Banks) have monitoring functions for the contemporary environmental qualities and also offer the future generation tangible information on the past environment by preserving the specimens. This entails the sampling of the representative specimen for each distinctive ecosystem, which is performed under a strict and stipulated procedure and a condition that does not allow any change in the component so that a retrospective analysis can be readily done even in the distant future. It has been more than 30 years that some developing countries started collecting a broad spectrum of specimens to vindicate the effectiveness of an environmental policy and to monitor the long-term variations of background concentrations of environmental pollutants. Though being late, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea, has successfully launched the National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) in 2009 equipped with its state-of-the-art automated cryogenic tanks. Since then, the researchers at the NESB have been doing their best to excel the existing ESBs around the world by learning and improving the expertise. To do so, they conducted a pilot study for developing and testing their own Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) based on the analysis of the examples of the other ESBs. The problems from the pilot study had been reviewed to improve the SOP to meet the requirements for an ESB, that is to say, preserving representative environmental specimens in cryogenic condition and enhancing the analytical method. Furthermore, they also need to prepare themselves to address the future challenges by providing some additional functions, which makes it distinguishable from the other ESBs. If successful, this will be a step further to be recognized as a full-fledged member of the ESB society of the world.
배구 경기에서 팀 공격 성공을 위한 선수들의 수행 특성 평가

The purpose of this study was to evaluate performance characteristics in the success of team attack during volleyball game. Three dimensional analysis was performed with games of business teams. Analyzed variables were followed by the movement distance of a setter when A-quick was occurred, the position during the spike, the possibility area during the attack, the right and left distance of the assistance attacker, the distance between attacker and blocker, and the distance between blockers each others. 1. It is recommended that the movement distance of the setter be decreased in order to make stable set condition. 2. In order to make one person blocking, the formation was to be consisted of the right and left formation which was associated with the progressive attack performance of the assistance attacker. 3. It is useful to widen attack area. Also it is necessary to improve the enhancement of passing the ball against the blocking of an opponent player. Finally, it is necessary to develop kinematic variables to evaluate performance characteristics of players. Further study may consider the best defense position against the attack of the opponent player.
NFPA 269에 의한 건축물 마감재의 연소가스독성평가연구

건축물 마감재료의 연소시 발생되는 독성가스는 대형화재로 인한 인명피해의 주된 원인 중의 하나이다. 현행 건축법에서는 건축물마감재료에 대하여 동물의 평균행동정지시간을 측정하는 가스유해성시험을 실시하고 있다. 본 연구는 동물시험이 아닌 NFPA 269에 의한 유효량분율(FED: Fractional effective does)을 이용하여 건축물 마감재의 독성지수를 도출하였다. 현행 가스유해성 평가 방법에서 사용되는 채임버(피검상자)를 이용하여 적외선분광분석 및 산소분석기로 연소가스를 정량 분석하였으며, NFPA269에서 규정하는 FED를 도출하였다. 몇 가지 건축재료에 대한 가스유해성시험의 평균행동정지시간과 FED의 상대적인 비교를 통해 연소가스독성평가를 수행하였다.

강유전성 액정 분자 배향을 위해 열방성 고분자 액정물질을 배향막으로 사용하고 그표면 morphology를 AFM(Atomic Forced Microscope)으로 관찰한 결과 잘 배향된 sample cell에서도 microgroove 구조가 나타나지 않았음을 관찰하였다. 잘 배향된 sample cell 23:1의 contrast ratio를 보이면서 memory 효과를 나타내었다. 또한 20V의 AC field로 안정화시키자 전형적인 stripe-shaped 무늬가 나타났다. Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) has been used for the alignment of ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) molecules and the surface morphology of the resulting polymeric thin film has been observed by atomic forced microscope. The uniform alignment of FLC molecules on the surface of thermotropic LCP thin film was obtained even though microgroove structures were not formed. The contrast ratio of sample cell was about 23:1 including two polarizers and a good memory capability due to the bistability of FLC was obtained. After AC field stabilization at 20V, the typical stripe-shaped patterns appeared.

Environmental Specimen Banks (ESBs) are playing pivotal role in monitoring the effect of environmental pollution on the ecosystem based on the retrospective analysis of the representative samples collected regularly and stored in cryogenic condition. In Korea, National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) was established in 2009 and the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for sampling, and cryogenic milling and storage had been prepared during 2007-2010. Since then, the tentative SOPs for the seven kinds of specimens (shoots of Red Pine (Pinus densiflora) and Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis), leaves of Mongolian Oak (Quercus mongolica) and Zelkova Tree (Zelkova serrata), eggs of Feral Pigeon (Columba livia var. domestica), muscles and organs of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), and Freshwater Bivalve (Unio (Nodularia) douglasiae)) have been put to test in the field and laboratory as well against the practicality and feasibility. The SOPs were improved by reflecting the findings from the research and the following discussion regarding the selection of specimen (Feral Pigeon suffering from a control management), sample size (a problem of decreasing number of sampling trees related to increasing sampling time) and period (a problem related to a bud growth), and sampling methods etc.. In addition, barcoding system for the management of the specimen information, and monitoring system of the cryogenic storage to regulate the optimum temperature and the liquid nitrogen level were also developed for the efficient and effective control of the samples. Lastly, the safety guide and emergency protocol were augmented to guarantee a safe work environment with the cryogenic facility. These improvements of the SOPs are expected to contribute to more stable operation of the NESB.

Environmental Specimen Banks (ESBs) have been established widely in the world since 1979 for monitoring long-term bio-accumulation of environmental pollutants. The ESBs perform the retrospective analysis of representative biological samples collected regularly and store them in cryogenic condition. In Korea, National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) was established in 2009. Since then, NESB had prepared the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the seven kinds of specimens (Red Pine (Pinus densiflora), Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), and etc.) for monitoring the effect of environmental pollution on the terrestrial ecosystem and river ecosystem. In 2012, NESB added Black-tailed Gull (Larus crassirostris)`s eggs to the list of the environmental specimen for monitoring marine environmental pollution. In this study, we sampled the eggs of the Black-tailed Gull on two islands (Baekryeongdo of the West Sea and Hongdo of the South Sea). Especially, we selected eggs which remained in the early stages of embryo development for certifying the consistent and stable monitoring for environmental pollutants in egg contents. However, it was not considered to classify an order of eggs per clutch in this study. It is known that the concentration variations of pollutants exist among eggs in one clutch. Therefore, it is needed to consider the positions of eggs in the laying sequences to meet the objective of bioaccumulation monitoring. We collected 30 eggs in each site but the amount may be insufficient to achieve storage target (over 2,000 g). Therefore, we need to consider an optimal sampling size.
환경모니터링을 위한 집비둘기 깃털의 중금속 축적특성 연구

Feral pigeon (Columba livia) has been known as a good indicator for accumulations of chemical pollutants in urban areas. However, it is against the animal rights to kill the indicator species in order to monitor pollutants accumulations in wild birds. Eggs and feathers of birds, therefore, have been used as non-invasive monitoring materials. Even though eggs are a good indicator for accumulations of lipophilic pollutants, but unsuitable for some heavy metals such as lead and cadmium because bird’s ovary builds a sort of barrier to inhibit higher accumulations of some heavy metals in the eggs. Therefore, feathers instead of eggs have been used as a non-invasive indicator for accumulations of heavy metals. However, there are few studies of heavy metal accumulations of feral pigeon in Korea. In this study, we characterized the characteristics of heavy metal accumulations of feathers in relation to internal organs (bloods, viscera and bones) in feral pigeons between two sites (Hangang Park representing urban area and Hampyeong Park for rural area). The samples from the Hangang Park showed significantly higher lead (Pb) concentrations in the blood, liver and bone than those from Hampyeong Park. The Pb concentration in the feathers was also significantly higher at Hangang Park than at Hampyeong Park. The analytical result for the breast, wing and tail feathers, and the internal organs (blood, lung, liver, kidney and bone) indicated that the Pb concentrations in the feathers were significantly positively correlated with the levels in the kidney and bone. Overall, feathers of feral pigeon may be candidate for bioindicator to monitor for Pb accumulations in urban areas.
