Purpose: Endoscopic surgery to treat thyroid neoplasm was developed to solve the aesthetic problems that resulted from conventional open surgery. Although endoscopic thyroidectomy was initially performed in patients with benign thyroid neoplasm, its use has recently been extended to patients with Graves's disease and early cases of thyroid cancer.The purpose of this study was to determine whether this surgical approach is feasible and safe for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Methods: Between December 1999 and April 2006, 132 thyroid cancer patients at our institution were treated by either conventional thyroidectomy or endoscopic thyroidectomy. Endoscopic thyroidectomy was conducted using a gasless anterior neck skin lifting method. The inclusion criteria for endoscopic thyroidectomy in thyroid cancer patients included a tumor size of less than 2cm, absence of extrathyroidal extension, absence of cervical lymph node metastasis, and well differentiated cancers. Results: We performed endoscopic thyroidectomy in 29 thyroid cancer patients. There were no significant differences in operative time, the amount of drainage and the number of retrieved lymph nodes between conventional thyroidectomy and endoscopic thyroidectomy. In addition, although endoscopic thyroidectomy was associated with more complications, it was also associated with a shorter hospital stay. Conclusion: The completeness of surgical resection conducted via an endoscopic thyroidectomy may be comparable to that of conventional surgery, however, a larger series and longer follow-up evaluation are necessary for definitive conclusions to be drawn about its oncologic validity. The purpose of the study was to investigate the differences in risk recognition regarding purchase of apparel goods according to internet shoppers` sex, age, and purchasing group and characteristics of apparel goods. For the measurement, a questionaire was developed by the researchers. The questionnaire consisted of questions regarding characteristics of the sample and apparel goods and risk on buying apparel through internet. Data analyses were performed by frequency analysis, factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey`s test. The result of the study was that significant differences showed in risk recognition of internet shoppers according to their sex, purchasing group, and fit of apparel goods.

Autophagy 매개체인 LC3로 인한 Aβ 신경 독성의 증가

Autophagy is a highly regulated cellular mechanism that results in the bulk degradation process and which seems to be implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological conditions relevant to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Also, it has been suggested that the large part of autophagy is mediated by Light Chains 3 (LC3). Despite research suggesting an association between AD and autophagy, many issues remain to be addressed. To determine the relevance between autophagy and AD, we evaluated amyloid beta (Aβ) toxicity either in SH-SY5Y cells transfected with only EGFP or the cells exogeneously transfected with EGFP-LC3, mediating autophagy easily by overexpressed LC3. Without treatment of Aβ, the cell viabilities were quietly similar in both kinds of cells. The cell viability was decreased significantly in LC3 overexpressed cells. Consistently, more increased oxidative stress was detected in LC3 overexpressed cells. These results suggest that autophagy enhanced Aβ toxicity by way of increasing oxidative stress at least in part. This study will be of help to understand the role of autophagy in neurodegenerative diseases.
