Vol.18 No.2

This article investigates MacCormick`s early conception of law, “Law as institutional Facts”, focusing on its philosophical foundations and jurisprudential implication. This conception has been defined as the concrete concept which has been ontologically oriented and embodies a substantial legal system. Earlier MacCormick primarily seeks for understanding of ontological theses of law. He demonstrates the way law exist by claiming that The existence of an instance of law(or legal institution) is in a philosophical sense a matter of institutional fact.” But MacCormick recognizes limitation of law as institutional reality in the structure of whole legal conception and explores the possibility of legal norms which transcends institutional facts. I claim that he extends the boundary of the legal, which results in practical theory of legal system.

The purpose of this study is to provide implications for designing and implementing non-face-to-face online classes at the College of Engineering in the post-corona era by analyzing the instructors’ evaluations and experiences of non-face-to-face online classes operated in the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the overall evaluation results of non-face-to-face online classes from instructors at the College of Engineering, ‘instructional design’ was the highest among the five areas including instructional design, learning management, learning support, learning evaluation, and instructional outcomes. In addition, the effectiveness of non-face-to-face online experimental or practical classes was found to be relatively low. The results of this study imply that the instructors need to consider several instructional strategies such as active interaction with learners, clear explanation, and the use of technology in non-face-to-face online engineering classes.

Vol.38 No.1

Advanced technologies enable teachers to collect and analyze learner data, which promotes personalized instructional design, easily. Nevertheless, if teachers ignore the data or fail to use them meaningfully for instructional design, learner data will not guarantee effective personalized instruction. In order to support such by employing learner data, it is essential to understand the perceptions of teachers who are the subjects of instructional design. Accordingly, 17 elementary school teachers who had basic knowledge of data usage and personalized instruction were interviewed. While some elementary school teachers had positive perceptions of learner data being beneficial for understanding students and improving instruction, others demonstrated negative attitudes toward the use of learner data and implementation of personalized instruction. Teachers also shared concerns about the limitations of conducting personalized instruction, including teachers’ lack of knowledge and skills, inadequate school system and infrastructure, and ethical issues in the practice. The teachers also expressed the view that the data, including learners’ characteristics, learning process, and effectiveness of instruction should be provided in an intuitive and adaptable way for personalized instructional design. Finally, the teachers suggested how to design personalized instruction by considering learners’ socio-emotional characteristics and academic achievements, which were derived from learner data. This study provides implications for the development of a personalized instruction support system by analyzing the needs of elementary school teachers systematically in relation to personalized instructional design using learner data.

Vol.33 No.3

For effective learning in computer-supported collaborative problem solving, students should be engaged in group regulation activities in which they jointly set a goal, monitor and regulate learning process, and evaluate group performance. This study explored group regulation clusters in cognitive, social, and environmental aspects and investigated differences in learning process and outcomes by the group regulation clusters in computer-supported collaborative problem solving. In this study, pre-service teachers (n=45) at a university in Seoul participated through collaboratively solving an authentic problem of cyber bullying in the online learning environment for three weeks. This study found three group regulation clusters: task-oriented regulation, socially-oriented regulation, and all-round regulation. The task-oriented regulation cluster focused on the task-related cognitive and environmental regulation activities, whereas the socially-oriented regulation cluster was actively engaged in building intimate and close relationships with group members. The all-round regulation cluster showed high engagement in all of the cognitive, social, and environmental group regulation activities. There were significant differences in the frequencies of new writing, comments, and chatting for collaborative problem solving among the three clusters. In addition, there was a marginally significant difference among the three clusters in regard to shared knowledge of cyber bullying at the post-test. These findings can be used for developing tools and resources for adaptive support on group regulation in computer-supported collaborative problem solving.

Vol.74 No.-

Science fiction is a genre of fiction that makes something imagined more believable based on the current or future science and technology. This paper focuses on the scientific factors as narrative devices exploited in Italo Calvino’s Cosmicomiche and Primo Levi’s Storie naturali, which can be viewed as science fiction. The two authors take advantage of the order and accuracy found in science to express the disordered reality in clear and precise language. Calvino reconstructs the history of the universe on the premise of scientific theories in Cosmicomiche. In such a process, it shows that finding the identity of the protagonist is possible only within the relationship with the entire universe, raising questions about anthropocentrism. Levy depicts individuals who are commercialized through the domination of science and technology in Storie naturali, and warns, if they fail to find rational order in a modern society dominated by chaos and disorder, the concentration camp, a monster created while reason was asleep, could come back to life in another form.

21 Vol.12 No.5

This study has been carried out as qualitative research with questionnaires and interviews, on the basis that teachers’ self-efficacy can influence the students directly or indirectly. In this study, the students made almost all decisions, and their ideas in planning study strategies were respected. Accordingly, the students challenged actively to accomplish the goals of lesson, and they were motivated. The students’ activities were intended to be carried by themselves, and the teacher was there just as a helper. This was resulted in increasing the students’ autonomy. Thanks to the teacher’s attitudes such as talking experiences or expressing sympathies to the students lack of confidence, they tried to communicate using even short conversations. However, even though there have been positive results, this study has still some limitation such as small number of students and short term period of experiment. Hopefully next study will have more students and long term period of experiment, and the results will be able to show objectivity to be contributed to the development of English education.

Learning analytics provides opportunities to deeply understand how people learn and to effectively design personalized learning environments, but there are ethical concerns of applying learning analytics, which constantly collects and analyzes student behavior data, in K-12 school. This study aims to explore the ethical issues and strategies through interviews with teachers who play a crucial role in teaching with learning analytics and have the responsibility to protect students from ethical problems. In this study, ten elementary school teachers, who had the experience of learning analytics, participated in the in-depth interviews regarding ethical issues of using the learning-analytics system and ethical strategies to address the issues in the context of Korean elementary schools. The framework of activity theory was applied to analyzing the ethical issues of learning analytics from the socio-cultural aspects. As a result, this study found six themes of ethical issues: privacy violation, incorrect analysis and intervention, surveillance and censorship, excessive competition, discrimination against low achievers, and unclear and inappropriate rules of responsibility. This study also found six themes of ethical strategies to reduce or prevent the contradictions of the activity system. The strategies were closely related to improving teachers’ capacities, learning analytics systems, educational intervention, ethical rules of data collection and analysis, rules of teachers’ rights and responsibilities, and participation of education stakeholders. This study implies that ethical issues are critical in successfully adopting learning analytics to improve teaching and learning in elementary schools.
