This study was undertaken to determine the effects of inbreeding, years, seasons, breeds and dam`s parities on pre- and post-weaning traits of litters. The data for this study were obtained from 187 heads of Landrace, Hampshire, Yorkshire and Duroc purebreds which were tested from 1980 to 1984 at National Animal Breeding Institute. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows ; 1. Litter size and pig weight were significantly affected by year, breed, dam`s parity(p $lt;0.01), but were not affected by inbreeding. 2. Daily gain, feed efficiency, backfat thickness, days to 90 kilogram and selection index were affected by year and breed(p $lt;0.01) and backfat thickness was affected by dam`s parity(p $lt;0.01), but inbreeding didn`t affect above all traits. 3. Regression coefficients on pre-and post-weaning traits, that is, litter size, pig weight at birth, pig weight at 21 day, daily gain, feed efficiency, backfat thickness, days to 90 kilogram and selection index were -0.064, -0.002, -0.005, -0.049, 0.001, 0.003, 0.012, -0.136, respectively.

This study compared the water quality supplied to dairy cows using a conventional and a magnetized automatic water trough. A magnetized device was attached to water troughs and water quality characteristics (hardness, bacterial counts, mineral contents and water pH) were estimated before and after its usage and compared with conventional system. The bacterial counts were significantly reduced in water supplied through magnetized water trough compared to that supplied through conventional system. Iron contents in water were reduced with the usage of magnetized water trough. Hardness, pH, chlorine, fluorine and nitrite contents of water were not affected by magnetization of water. 본 시험은 기존의 급수기에 수질개선을 위하여 자화수 발생장치를 장착 시 수질향상 효과가 있는지를 알아보기 위하여 시험한 결과, 기존 급수기에 자화수 발생장치를 추가하여 기존 급수기의 수질과 비교한 결과, 총 박테리아수가 크게 감소하였으며, 철 성분도 검출되지 않아 일부 항목에서 수질개선 효과가 있었다. 결론적으로 기존의 급수기에 자화수 발생장치를 추가 장착할 경우 수질개선 효과가 있을 것으로 생각되었으며, 수질개선에 따른 생산성 증가 효과는 추후 더 많은 연구가 이루어져야 할 것으로 사료된다.

Hematologic investigations were made on the blood samples taken from bovine leukemia virus (BLV)-seropositive Holstein-Friesian cattle in Korea, and their absolute lymphocyte count was compared with that of BLV-seronegative cattle. The incidence of persistent lymphocytosis (PL) was also determined. The normal bovine lymphocyte count was established on the basis of studies of 656 blood samples taken three times from 297 seronegative animals aged from 0~6 months to over 5 years at 5~6-month intervals. The data were examined according to 7 age groups of samples placed into their respective age groups. A peak in average total count was reached at 6~12 months ($5.36{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$) and thereafter the count declined continuously until over 5 years ($3.17{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$). From the results, 99.74 percent limits were calculated, and the upper limit of the range was chosen as the cutoff point for lymphocytosis. A PL was defined as a lymphocyte count that exceeded the above 99.74 percent limits and persisted over an interval of at least three months. The criterion for PL was applied to classifying 515 blood samples obtained four times from 189 seropositive animals without clinical signs at 5~7-month intervals. It was found that 54 (28.5%) of seropositive animals were with PL; cattle with PL were in age groups of 2~3 years to over 5 years.
