Vol.16 No.1

This experiment was conducted to learn the effects of salinity on growth and survival of juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys oliuaceus. Fish were reared in completely recirculating fish tanks for 14 weeks. Six tanks (250 L/tank) were established with three different salinities (5,20 and 35‰), and thus a pair of tanks was assigned to each salinity. Water temperature was maintained at 20 to 22 C throughout this study. The results showed that growth of the fish was best at 35‰, less at 20‰, and least at 5‰. However, growth differences in total length and body weight of fish in 5, 20 and 35‰ were not statistically significant until the 12th week (P>0.05). Growth at 5‰ became significantly slower than at 20 or 35‰ on the 14th week(P<0.05). Although specific growth rate at 20‰ was slightly greater than at 35‰, the difference was not obvious (P> 0.05). However, significant differences in specific growth rate existed between 5 and 20‰, or 5‰ and 35%. When considering three food-related factors, such as condition factor (CF), feed intake, and food conversion rate (FCR), there were no meaningful differences among all salinities (P>0.05). At the end of this experiment, survival rate at 35‰ was 97.5%, and those at 20‰ and 5‰ were 88.8% and 86.2%, respectively. These results indicate that low salinity underground seawater is worth to be utilized for flounder farming industry in Jeju Island.

First record of Snyderina yamanokami (Pisces: Scorpaeniformes) from Korea

2010 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.13 No.3

This is the first report of Snyderina yamanokami, from the subfamily Tetraroginae of the family Scorpaenidae, collected in Korea. The specimen (175.3 mm long) was caught in the coastal waters of Jeju Island on a commercial longline hook on 9 September 2009. This species is characterized by the following morphological traits: 9-11 dorsal fin rays, 5-6 anal fin rays, 13-15 pectoral fin rays, 5 ventral fin rays, pectoral fin tip reaching or extending past the origin of the anal fin, palatines toothless, and four dark spots on the middle of the body. We suggest a new Korean name, “Keun-mi-yeok-chi,” for S. yamanokami.

Molecular Identification and Morphological Characteristics of the Longjaw Bonefish, Albula argentea Collected in Korea

Vol.31 No.4

One specimen of Albula argentea (296.3 mm in standard length), belonging to the family Albulidae, was collected in a set net in the coastal waters of Jejudo Island, Korea. As the adult A. argentea has not been caught from Korean waters, we described its morphological characters based on the collected specimen and compared them with those of the previous reports on A. argentea and A. koreaus. As a result, the present specimen was characterized by having 68~73 pored lateral line scales (vs. 77~78 for A. koreana), 72~73 vertebrae pored lateral line scales (vs. 77~80) and none streak on the check (vs. yellowish streak). Molecular analysis using the mitochondrial cytochrome b DNA sequences was also conducted to confirm the correctness of species identification and taxonomic status of the sample.

First Record of the Annular Sole, Brachirus annularis (Soleidae, Pleuronectiformes) from Korea

Vol.31 No.3

This is the first report of Brachirus annularis (Pleuronectiformes: Soleidae) from Korea. A specimen of B. annularis (229.0 mm standard length) was firstly collected by drift gill net at a fishing ground locating between Jejudo and Geomundo Islands, the southern coast of Korea on 31 March, 2019. This species was characterized by having five large, deep colored patches on the ocular side of body, each patch outlined by dark brown ring, united dorsal and anal fins jointed with caudal fin, and short pectoral fin. We add this species to the Korean fish fauna and propose its new Korean names, “Eol-luk-seo-dae-sok” and “Eol-luk-seo-dae” for the genus and species, respectively.

First Record of the Doublespotted Queenfish, Scomberoides lysan (Perciformes: Carangidae) from Korea

Vol.30 No.4

This is the first report of Scomberoides lysan (Perciformes: Carangidae) from Korea. Two specimens (334 and 354 mm standard length) were collected by a set net from the coastal waters of Jejudo Island on 30 September, 2010. This species is characterized and distinguishable from a morphologically similar Scomberoides tol as follows. It has the posterior end of maxilla reaching to the posterior margin of eye (vs. not reaching in S. tol) and two rows of 5~8 small blotches on both sides of body (vs. one row of blotches). We add S. lysan to the Korean fish fauna and propose a new Korean name, “Du-jeom-jul-ga-si-jeon-gaeng-i” for the species because it has two series of dusk blotches on both sides of body.

Vol.13 No.4

The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of consumer ethnocentric tendency and foreign culture acceptance on preference of traditional alcoholic beverage: Korean Makgeolli and Japanese Sake. Data were collected from undergraduate students and salaried men who have drinking experience in Seoul by trained interviewers. The result of the present study indicate that ethnocentric tendency was significant on the preference of Makgeolli and Sake.; positive on Makgeolli, negative on Sake. Foreign culture acceptance was not significant on the preference of Makgeolli, by contrast, significant on the preference of Sake; ineffective on Makgeolli, positive on Sake. This empirical study carries an important meaning to investigate the influence of consumers' ethnocentrism and foreign culture acceptance on the Korean and Japanese traditional alcoholic beverage.
