It has been reported that sulfur-containing intermediates or products in the transsulfuration pathway including S-adenosylmethionine, 5'-methylthioadenosine, glutathione and taurine can prevent liver injury mediated by inflammation response induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treatment. The present study examines the modulation of hepatic metabolism of sulfur amino acid in a model of acute sepsis induced by LPS treatment (5 mg/kg, iv). Serum TNF-alpha and hepatotoxic parameters were significantly increased in rats treated with LPS, indicating that LPS results in sepsis at the doses used in this study. LPS also induced oxidative stress determined by increases in malondialdehyde levels and decreases in total oxy-radical scavenging capacities. Hepatic methionine and glutathione concentrations were decreased, but S-adenosylho-mocysteine, cystathionine, cysteine, hypotaurine and taurine concentrations were increased. Hepatic protein expression of methionine adenosyltransferase, cystathionine beta-synthase and cysteine dioxygenase were induced, but gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase catalytic subunit levels were decreased. The results show that sepsis activates transsulfuration pathway from methionine to cysteine, suggesting an increased requirement for methionine during sepsis.

PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is being rapidly spread and installed in many hospitals, but most of the system do not include nuclear medicine field. Although additional costs of hardware for nuclear medicine PACS is low, the complexity in developing viewing software and little market have made the nuclear medicine PACS not popular. Most PACS utilize DICOM 3.0 as standard format, but standard format in nuclear medicine has been Interfile. Interfile should be converted into DICOM format if nuclear images are to be stored and visualized in most PACS. Nowadays, many vendors supply the DICOM option in gamma camera and PET. Several hospitals in Korea have already installed nuclear PACS with DICOM, but only the screen captured images are supplied. Software for visualizing pseudo-color with color lookup tables and expressing with volume view should be developed to fulfill the demand of referring physicians and nuclear medicine physicians. PACS is going to integrate not only radiologic images but also endoscopic and pathologic images. Web and PC based PACS is now a trend and is much compatible with nuclear medicine PACS. Most important barrier for nuclear medicine PACS that we encounter is not a technical problem, but indifference of investor such as administrator of hospital or PACS. Now it is time to support and invest for the development of nuclear medicine PACS.

Among the various social problems in Korea, students sociality of science and engineering majors has become one of the most urgent problems to be solved. So far a number of studies have been performed from the view point of society, government, and education, but there has been little study to solve the crisis of science and engineering from the view point of education. In this research, we studied about the causes of and the proper solutions to the problems in the curricula of Science and of Engineering in the university. To find the problems with scientific and engineering education, we performed the survey of the mathematics and science curricula at several universities. From an analysis of survey data provided by researchers in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, we found problems in the subjects and curricula in the four basic scientific fields, compared with the cases of foreign universities in the USA, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, etc. 이공계 기피현상으로 시작된 이공계 위기 관련한 여러 가지 문제들이 현재 사회 문제로 대두되고 있다. 이러한 이공계 문제를 해소하기 위한 다양한 연구가 사회적인 측면, 경제적인 측면, 교육적인 측면에서 이루어지고 있지만, 정작 본질적인 분야인 교육적 측면에서 이공계 문제를 해결하기 위한 방안은 미미하다. 따라서 이공계 문제를 해결하기 위한 교육 분야에서 이공계 대학의 기초과학 과목에 대한 교육 및 교과운용방법의 문제점과 그에 대한 개선방안에 대하여 연구하였다. 국내외 대학의 이공계 기초 과학 분야에 대한 국내외의 설문 조사 및 실태조사가 실시되었고, 각 분야별 전문가 그룹에 의하여 현재 국내 대학에서의 기초 과학 교과목에 대한 문제점과 교육과정의 활용상의 문제점을 파악했으며 연구결과의 분석을 통하여 연구결과의 활용방안을 여러 부문에서 효과적으로 운용할 수 있는 토대를 마련하였다.
