Industrial supply water is contaminated with organic and inorganic materials by itself. Recently, ammonium(NH_4^+) and nitrate(NO_3^-) from life waste water contaminate industrial supply and significantly effect on equality of products. This study was performed to remove the ammonium and nitrate in industrial supply water by using cation and anion exchange resin. The adsorptions of NH_4^+, NO_3^- follow the Freundlich isotherm. The exchange capacity of the cation exchange resin for NH_4^+ treatment is apt to decrease in proportion to increasing the temperature and pH. Anion exchange resin has a little effect on temperature and pH conditions for NO_3^- treatment. The breakthrough capacity is taken 2.29㎎/㎎-R for NH_4^+ and 15.76㎎/㎎-R for NO_3^-.

We have tried to wasted biological sludge as a starting material to produce a low-cost adsorbent alternative for activated carbon and for reuse of wasted materials. The carbonated sludge was chemically activated with phosphoric acid. To find out the optimum conditions for activated carbon, chemical activation was used with varying: carbonization time, activation agent, activation temperature and activation time. The activated products were characterized by measuring iodine adsorptivity, methylene blue adsorptivity, specific surface areas, yield, pore structure and SEM photograph. The products activated by phosphoric acid in a rotary kiln reactor operated around 700℃ had iodine adsorptivity, methylene blue adsorptivity, and specific surface area of 312.4mg/g, 32.2 mg/g, and 96.6㎡/g with yields of 84.1wt%, respectively.
