        “Advocate Goodness of Human Nature to Anyone Coming across”: Analysis on “Good Nature Theory” of Mencius

        孟子人性論的基本觀點爲"人性善"或"性善",業已成爲"國民常識"。在這一常識的背後,隱伏著深度的誤讀與曲解。孟子從個體生命體驗和形式邏輯層面反複證明的一個觀點爲――人性有善端。仁義禮智"四端"源自天,存諸人心爲"立命"。人性之善是與善惡相對之善,善不是絶對之善。但是,孟子從未否定"性"有惡端。人性有惡端是眞理,惡具有實質義。硏究孟子人性學說,在方法論上應當遵循"以孟釋孟"原則,在文本釋讀與思想詮釋上,應當區別"君子所性"與"性"兩個槪念。在"君子所性"層面,孟子刻意强調君子與禽獸的"幾希"之別,君子在應然意義上當以"四端"爲性,而不可以"食色"爲性;但在"性"或"人性"層面,孟子幷沒有否定"性"或"人性"有惡端, "大體"與"小體"同在於人心。盡管君子在功夫論層面不將"味"、"色"、"聲"、"臭"稱之爲性,但芸芸衆生之"性"還是蘊含"味"、"色"、"聲"、"臭"。秦漢以降,曆代學人之所以對孟子人性學說理解不一,大多在於未厘淸"君子所性"與"性"兩個槪念的區別。 Mencius’ view on human nature can be summarized as “goodness of human nature” or “goodness of nature”; however, it is seriously misread and distorted when it becomes a “common sense of all the people.” Human nature can be a good starting point - Since Mencius, it has been proven time after time from the aspects of life-experience and of formal logic. The starting points of “humanity, righteousness, propriety and wisdom” come from Heaven (tian 天),1 and are internalized in human heart. The goodness of human nature is, however, not an absolute concept but a relative one, opposite to badness. Mencius, nevertheless, had never denied bad starting points of human nature; for him, bad starting points also truly and substantially lie within human nature. When studying and analyzing Mencius’s theory of human nature, “interpreting Mencius by Mencius” should be adopted as a methodological principle. In interpreting text and thought of Mencius, the distinction between “nature” and “nature for the exemplary person” must also be stressed. On the level of the exemplary person, Mencius deliberately emphasizes “little difference” between nature of the exemplary person and that of animals. As a matter of course, the exemplary person should take “four starting points” as his nature instead of “food and sex.” On the other side, since Mencius does not deny the bad starting points from the aspect of nature or human nature, he also maintains that “the excellent parts 大体” and “the common parts 小体” co-exist within one human heart. From a view of Gongfulun 功夫论 (accomplishment of cognizing things), the exemplary person excludes “taste,” “sex,” “sounds,” and “smell” from one’s nature, but for common people, on the contrary, such bodily functions and desires are still included in their nature. Since Qin and Han dynasties, scholars presented various interpretations on Mencius’ notion of human nature, but most of them had neglected the distinction between “nature” and “nature for the exemplary person.” [Article in Chinese]

        Effect of Sub-Structure and Precipitation Behavior on Mechanical Properties of Al–xCu–Li Alloys

        The tensile properties and microstructure of extruded and cold rolled 2A55 Al–Li alloys with different Cu content werestudied. After solution treatment, the strength of extruded sheets is slightly higher than that of cold rolled sheets due to strongdeformation texture and high density of substructure. However, the strength change order is different with the increase of Cucontent with T6-24 h. The extruded sample with higher Cu content have higher strength due to many dense T1precipitates. The δ′/θ′/δ′ composite precipitates and θ′ precipitates suppress the formation of T1precipitates, which cause cold rolled samplewith higher Cu content shows lower strength. Additionally, many fine T1precipitates nucleate at the sub-grain boundariesformed in the extrusion process, which have a significant effect on the mechanical property.

        Experimental study on the Markstein length and laminar burning velocity of CH4 /RP-3 mixture

        Experimental studies were performed to investigate the effects of methane addition on the combustion characteristics of Chinese RP-3 kerosene/air mixture. Experiments were in a combustion vessel and the influences of methane addition on the flame propagation characteristic, Markstein length and laminar burning velocity of CH 4 /RP-3/air mixture at initial temperature of 420 K, initial pressure of 0.1 MPa, equivalence ratios of 0.8-1.3 and methane additions of 0.0-0.8 were investigated. Results show that with the increase of equivalence ratio, the flame front of RP-3/air mixture becomes unstable and a cellular flame structure is observed when the equivalence ratio increases to 1.3, but at the equivalence ratio of 1.3, the increased methane addition can make the flame front stable significantly. With the increase of equivalence ratio from 0.8 to 1.3, laminar burning velocities of CH 4 /RP-3/air mixture first increase and then decrease; the effect of methane addition on laminar burning velocity is not evident at the equivalence ratios of 0.9-1.1, but when the equivalence ratio is larger than 1.1, laminar burning velocities with methane addition of 0.8 are always the slowest. The Markstein length decreases with the increase of equivalence rati; at equivalence ratio of 0.8 the Markstein length decreases with the increase of methane addition, and with the increase of equivalence ratio the influence of methane addition on Markstein length becomes less significant and irregular.

        Comparison of Two Different Schemes of Once-weekly Ovum Pick Up in Dairy Heifers

        To compare two different schemes, continuous scheme (CS) and discontinuous scheme (DCS), of once-weekly ovum pick up (OPU) with ultrasound-guided follicular puncture technique, Holstein heifers were randomly divided into two groups of five. After characterization of their two normal estrous cycles, the heifers were subjected to consecutive 20 weeks of once-weekly OPU under two schemes: the CS (one week interval between continuous OPU, total 100 OPU sessions performed) and the DCS (OPU fixed to the day 3 and day 10 of each estrus). Then, the status of ovaries and artificial insemination results were observed. On oocyte yield, the total number of punctured follicles using DCS was lower than that using CS, but the mean numbers of punctured follicles and recovered oocytes per session were higher in DCS than CS group. So the total number of recovered oocytes was similar in both groups. There were also no differences in the quality of recovered oocytes, nor in the developmental ability of oocytes fertilized in vitro between groups. The heifers in the DCS group showed regular estrous cycles with stable estrous signs through the periods of before, during, and after OPU, while those in CS group showed longer estrous cycles and less estrous signs during and/or after OPU compared with before period. Furthermore, the mean number of inseminations required for obtaining pregnancy after completion of the experiments was lower in DCS than CS group. The research demonstrates that similar quantity and quality oocytes can be achieved, and the side effects on donors are lower in DCS that needs fewer OPUs than CS group, and DCS is superior to CS.

        Honeybees (Apis mellifera) modulate dance communication in response to pollution by imidacloprid

        Imidacloprid, one of the most commonly used insecticides, is highly toxic to honeybees and other beneficial insects. Imidacloprid is a chloronicotinyl insecticide, which has a highly specific affinity to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the honeybee’s nervous system. So it may interfere with dance behavior and memory formation. We found the waggle dances were modulated in honeybees fed sucrose water containing imidacloprid (pesticide group) compared to those fed normal sucrose water (control group). In our data, dancers of the pesticide group significantly increased the variance of divergence angle and the return phases in waggle dances than the control group. And the dance followers in pesticide group significantly increased the variance of crop content than the control group. Furthermore, four learning and memory related genes were significantly regulated at the gene expression levels between pesticide and control group. Our data revealed that the sublethal dose of imidacloprid impaired the honeybees’ learning and memory and resulted in cognitive disorder. The dancers may adjust their recruitment behavior leading to the observed reduced number of followers. We conclude that modulation of in-hive communication serves to protect the colony from foraging toxic food.

        Using the Lymph Node Ratio to Evaluate the Prognosis of Stage II/III Breast Cancer Patients Who Received Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy and Mastectomy

        Purpose This study was conducted to investigate the prognostic value of lymph node ratio (LNR) instage II/III breast cancer patients who undergo mastectomy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Materials and MethodsClinical and pathological data describing stage II/III breast cancer patients were includedin this retrospective study. The primary outcomes were locoregional recurrence-free survival(LRFS), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and overallsurvival (OS). ResultsAmong 277 patients, there were 43 ypN0, 64 ypN1, 89 ypN2, and 81 ypN3 cases. Additionally, there were 43, 57, 92 and 85 cases in the LNR 0, 0.01-0.20, 0.21-0.65, and> 0.65 groups, respectively. The median follow-up was 49.5 months. Univariate analysisshowed that both ypN stage and LNR were prognostic factors of LRFS, DMFS, DFS, and OS(p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that LNR was an independent prognostic factor ofLRFS, DMFS, DFS, and OS (p < 0.05), while ypN stage had no effect on prognosis (p > 0.05). ConclusionThe integrated use of LNR and ypN may be suitable for evaluation the prognosis of stageII/III breast cancer patients who undergo mastectomy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

        Species Classification and Quality Assessment of Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Based on High-Performance Liquid Chromatographic Fingerprint and Combined Chemometrics Methods

        A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was established to analyze 36 Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) samples collected from three species (Bupleurum chinense DC., B. scorzonerifolium Willd. and B. smithii Wolff.). Addition of trifluoroacetic acid into the mobile phase resulted in fingerprint chromatograms with stable baselines. There were thirty-two characteristic peaks in the standard fingerprint of B. chinense DC. Different recognition pattern methods, including similarity analysis (SA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares-discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) were utilized to analyze the 36 samples based on the contents of chemical constituents. Consistent results from SA, HCA and PCA analysis illustrated the rationalisation for why B. smithii Wolff. was not quoted in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and classified samples were in agreement with their species. PLS-DA loading plots showed the chemical markers which had the most influences on the separation among different species. However, SA, HCA and PCA could not differentiate between wild and cultivated B. chinense DC. as well as between samples from different provinces. HPLC fingerprint in combination with chemometric techniques provided a very flexible and reliable method for homogeneity evaluation and quality assessment of traditional Chinese medicine.

        Profiling Gene Expression During Gland Morphogenesis of a Glanded and a Glandless Upland Cotton

        The pigment gland is an important character of the Gossypium plant. With the aim of identifying genes involved in pigment gland morphogenesis in cotton, gene expression during pigment gland morphogenesis in Chuan 2802, which is glanded both in seed and plant, and a glandless line N5 was profiled using Affymetrix Cotton microarray. The results showed that there were 564 differentially expressed genes greater than twofold during gland morphogenesis. About 60.2% of these genes shares similarity with known genes on GenBank and about 39.8% with no functional description in the database. These described genes may play roles in defense response, response to oxidative stress, peroxidase activity, and the other metabolic pathways. The KEGG Orthology-Based Annotation System indicated that these above twofold expressed genes involved seven biochemical pathways on KEGG. These findings suggest that a complicated regulation is associated with pigment gland morphogenesis and the associated defense response including gossypol biosynthesis in cotton.

        Aquaporin 1 (AQP1) is expressed in most microvasculature endothelial cells and forms water channels that play major roles in a variety of physiologic processes. This study aimed to delineate the transcriptional regulation of AQP1 by Mef2c in endothelial cells. Mef2c cooperated with Sp1 to activate human AQP1 transcription by binding to its proximal promoter in human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Over-expression of Mef2c, Sp1, or Mef2c/Sp1 increased HUVEC migration and tube-forming ability, which can be abolished AQP1 knockdown. These data indicate that AQP1 is a direct target of Mef2c in regulating angiogenesis and vasculogenesis of endothelial cells.
