      • I-SEAD: A Secure Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

        Wei-Shen Lai,Chu-Hsing Lin,Jung-Chun Liu,Yen-Lin Huang,Mei-Chun Chou 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.3 No.4

Ad hoc networks are highly dynamic routing networks cooperated by a collection of wireless mobile hosts without any assistance of a centralized access point. Secure Efficient Ad hoc Distance Vector (SEAD) is a proactive routing protocol, based on the design of Destination Sequenced Distance Vector routing protocol (DSDV). SEAD provides a robust protocol against attackers trying to create incorrect routing state in the other node. However, it does not provide a way to prevent an attacker from tampering the next hop or the destination field in route update. In this paper, we propose an I-SEAD protocol to solve the problem. A series of simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance.

Overexpression of Uridine-Cytidine Kinase 2 Correlates with Breast Cancer Progression and Poor Prognosis

        Guosong Shen,Pingya He,Yingying Mao,Peipei Li,Frank Luh,Guohui Ding,Xi Yong Liu,Yun Yen 한국유방암학회 2017 Journal of breast cancer Vol.20 No.2

Purpose: Uridine-cytidine kinase (UCK) 2 is a rate-limiting enzyme involved in the salvage pathway of pyrimidine-nucleotide biosynthesis. Recent studies have shown that UCK2 is overexpressed in many types of cancer and may play a crucial role in activating antitumor prodrugs in human cancer cells. In the current study, we evaluated the potential prognostic value of UCK2 in breast cancer. Methods: We searched public databases to explore associations between UCK2 gene expression and clinical parameters in patients with breast cancer. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was performed to identify biological pathways associated with UCK2 gene expression levels. Survival analyses were performed using 10 independent large-scale breast cancer microarray datasets. Results: We found that UCK2 mRNA expression was elevated in breast cancer tissue compared with adjacent nontumorous tissue or breast tissue from healthy controls. High UCK2 levels were correlated with estrogen receptor negativity (p<0.001), advanced tumor grade (p<0.001), and poor tumor differentiation (p<0.001). GSEA revealed that UCK2-high breast cancers were enriched for gene sets associated with metastasis, progenitor-like phenotypes, and poor prognosis. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analyses of microarray datasets verified that high UCK2 gene expression was associated with poor overall survival in a dose-response manner. The prognostic power of UCK2 was superior to that of TNM staging and comparable to that of multiple gene signatures. Conclusion: These findings suggest that UCK2 may be a promising prognostic biomarker for patients with breast cancer.

      • Extension and averaging operators for finite fields

Koh, Doowon,Shen, Chun-Yen Cambridge University Press 2013 Proceedings of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society Vol.56 No.2

<B>Abstract</B><P>In this paper we study <I>Lp−Lr</I> estimates of both the extension operator and the averaging operator associated with the algebraic variety <I>S</I> = {<I>x</I> ∈ : <I>Q(x)</I> = 0}, where <I>Q(x)</I> is a non-degenerate quadratic form over the finite field with <I>q</I> elements. We show that the Fourier decay estimate on <I>S</I> is good enough to establish the sharp averaging estimates in odd dimensions. In addition, the Fourier decay estimate enables us to simply extend the sharp <I>L</I>2−<I>L</I>4 conical extension result in , due to Mockenhaupt and Tao, to the <I>L</I>2−<I>L</I>2(<I>d</I>+1)/(<I>d</I>−1) estimate in all odd dimensions <I>d</I> ≥ 3. We also establish a sharp estimate of the mapping properties of the average operators in the case when the variety <I>S</I> in even dimensions <I>d</I> ≥ 4 contains a <I>d</I>/2-dimensional subspace.</P>

Effects of Chromium Supplementation and Lipopolysaccharide Injection on the Immune Responses of Weanling Pigs

        Lee, D.N.,Shen, T.F.,Yen, H.T.,Weng, C.F.,Chen, B.J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.10

Sixteen specific pathogen free 4-wk-old crossbred weanling pigs were allotted into a $2{\times}2$ factorial experiment to evaluate the effects of chromium (Cr) on the immune responses after lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection. Two factors included (1) no Cr or 400 ppb Cr supplementation from chromium picolinate (CrPic) and (2) LPS injection ($200{\mu}g/kg$ BW, intraperitoneally) on day 21 (d 21) and 35 (d 35) as compared with saline application. Plasma samples were obtained from all piglets before (0 h) and at 2 h, 4 h, 8 h, and 24 h after LPS injection. The changes in tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$) and leukocyte populations after LPS injection were not significant on d 21. On d 35, the plasma $TNF-{\alpha}$ level was increased at h 2 postinjection, and supplemental Cr reduced the $TNF-{\alpha}$ level. The leukocyte populations had changed profoundly and lymphocyte subsets of $CD2^+$ and $CD8^+$ were reduced at 8 h postinjection. The blood granulocytes were increased and the percentage of $CD2^+$ was reduced in the Cr-fed group on d 35. Furthermore, Cr supplementation decreased the blastogensis of concanavalin A-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) on d 21. These results suggest that 400 ppb Cr supplementation from CrPic in diets may modulate the immune responses in weanling pigs during LPS injection.

Single-Level Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Compared with Cage Screw Implants: 2-Year Clinical and Radiological Outcomes Especially Adjacent Level Ossification

        Evan Teo Yu Ze,Yen Joshua Wong Rui,Seow Dexter,Jiali Corin Chen,Kumar Laranya,Baskar Sangeetha,Liang Shen,Kumar Naresh 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.4

Study Design: Retrospective single-center, single-surgeon cohort study.Purpose: Our goal was to compare the 2-year clinical and radiological results of artificial disc replacement (ADR) and cage screw (CS) implants in patients with cervical degenerative disc disease (DDD).Overview of Literature: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion with CS implants are an acceptable alternative to traditional cageplate construct due to perceived decreased complications of dysphagia. However, patients may experience adjacent segment disease because of increased motion and intradiscal pressure. ADR is an alternative to restore the physiological kinematics of the operated disc. Few studies directly compare ADR and CS construct for their efficacy. Methods: Patients who received single-level ADR or CS between January 2008 and December 2018 were included. Data collected was preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively (6, 12, 24 months). Demographic information, surgical information, complications, follow-up surgery, and outcome ratings (Japanese Orthopaedic Association [JOA], Neck Disability Index [NDI], Visual Analog Scale [VAS] neck and arm, 36-item Short Form Health Survey [SF-36], EuroQoL-5 Dimension [EQ-5D]) were gathered. The radiological assessment included motion segment height, adjacent disc height, lordosis, cervical lordosis, T1 slope, the sagittal vertical axis C2–7, and adjacent level ossification development (ALOD).Results: Fifty-eight patients were included (ADR: 37 and CS: 21). At 6 months, both groups’ JOA, VAS, NDI, SF-36, and EQ-5D scores significantly improved, and the positive trends persisted at 2 years. Noted no significant difference in the enhancement of clinical scores except for the VAS arm (ADR: 5.95 vs. CS: 3.43, <i>p</i> =0.001). Radiological parameters were comparable except for the progression of ALOD of the subjacent disc (ADR: 29.7% vs. CS: 66.9%, <i>p</i> =0.02). No significant difference in adverse events or severe complications seen. Conclusions: ADR and CS obtain good clinical results for symptomatic single-level cervical DDD. ADR demonstrated a significant advantage over CS in the improvement of VAS arm and reduced progression of ALOD of the adjacent lower disc. No statistically significant difference of dysphonia or dysphagia between the two groups were seen, attributed to their comparable zero profile.

2H-Silicon Carbide Epitaxial Growth on c-Plane Sapphire Substrate Using an AlN Buffer Layer and Effects of Surface Pre-Treatments

        Tien-Tung Luong,Binh Tinh Tran,Yen-Teng Ho,Ting-Wei Wei,Yue-Han Wu,Tzu-Chun Yen,Lin-Lung Wei,Jer-Shen Maa,Edward Yi Chang 대한금속·재료학회 2015 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.11 No.3

The effects of surface pre-treatments and the role of an AlN buffer layer for 2H-SiC growth on c-plane sapphire substrates by thermal CVD are investigated. While the crystallinity of SiC directly grown on sapphire substrate always degrades with a hydrogen pre-treatment but improves by optimizing carbonization, the crystallinity of SiC grown on sapphire substrate using an AlN buffer grown by MOCVD improves with sufficient time of exposure to the H pre-treatment but always deteriorates with carbonization. Detailed microstructural analysis by phi-scan x-ray diffraction reveals that SiC film grown on sapphire substrate consists of crystalline domains with two different crystallographic orientations which are rotated relative to each other along the [111] axis by 60°. A highly oriented hexagonal 2H-SiC film is obtained on low-cost c-plane sapphire substrate by using an AlN buffer. 2H-SiC is unambiguously determined not only by phi-scan x-ray diffraction but also by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The growth relationship between 2HSiC and 2H-AlN are coherent due to the favorable bonding of C and Al between SiC and AlN.

Screening, Purification, and Characterization of an Extracellular Prolyl Oligopeptidase from Coprinopsis clastophylla

        Jen-Tao Chen,Mei-Li Chao,Chiou-Yen Wen,Wen-Shen Chu 한국미생물학회 2012 The journal of microbiology Vol.50 No.4

Culture filtrates of 22 mushrooms were screened for extracellular prolyl oligopeptidase activity. Four strains with relatively high enzyme activity were all from inky cap mushrooms. The production of Coprinopsis clastophylla prolyl oligopeptidase was associated with the growth of the fungus and the enzyme was not released by cell lysis. The enzyme was purified 285-fold to a specific activity of 52.05 U/mg. It was purified to a single band on a native polyacrylamide gel. However, the enzyme separated into three bands on a sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel with mobility corresponding to molecular weights of approximately 84,60, and 26 kDa. The results of tandem mass spectrometric analysis revealed that the 60 kDa protein was likely a degradation product of the 84 kDa protein. The isoelectric point of the purified enzyme was 5.2. The purified enzyme had an optimal pH and temperature of 8.0 and 37°C, respectively. Diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP), p-chloromercuribenzoaic acid (PCMB), Hg2+, and Cu2+ strongly inhibited C. clastophylla prolyl oligopeptidase. This enzyme is a serine peptidase and one or more cysteine residues of the enzyme are close to the active site.

Effects of Chromium Supplementation and Lipopolysaccharide Injection on Physiological Responses of Weanling Pigs

        Lee, D.N.,Weng, C.F.,Yen, H.T.,Shen, T.F.,Chen, B.J. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.4

Sixteen specific pathogen free 4-wk-old crossbred weanling pigs were allotted into a $2{\times}2$ factorial design to evaluate chromium picolinate (CrPic) on growth and physiological responses. Two factors included (1) no Cr or 400 ppb Cr supplementation from chromium picolinate and (2) lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection on day 21 (d 21) and 35 (d 35) compared to saline application. Plasma samples and rectal temperature were obtained from all piglets before (h 0) and at 2 h (h 2), 4 h (h 4), 8 h (h 8), and 24 h (h 24) after LPS injection ($200{\mu}g/kg$ BW, intraperitoneally). The rectal temperature on d 21 was significantly decreased (p<0.05) of about $0.36^{\circ}C$ with Cr supplementation before LPS injection. After LPS injection, the daily gain of piglets was decreased during d 35-38. Supplementation of Cr had no effect in general on growth performance particularly after LPS injection. The plasma glucose, triglycerides and urea nitrogen concentrations were changed in different ways after LPS injection. Plasma cortisol level was significantly elevated at h 2 after LPS injection on d 21 and d 35. The supplementation of Cr in the diet can delayed plasma cortisol release on d 35. The results suggest that 400 ppb Cr supplementation from CrPic may modulate the physiological response during immune stress in weanling pigs.
