<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We aimed to separate individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) state into subgroups according to neurobiological characteristics using structural and functional network constructs and examine their clinical characteristics. Structural diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed in 61 healthy controls (HC), 57 individuals at CHR and 29 patients with schizophrenia (SZ). The main outcome was a likelihood ratio calculated from measures of structural and functional network efficiencies, coupling strength of structural and functional networks, and a disease-specific data analysis, resulting in the most probable classification of CHR into HC or SZ. The likelihood ratios revealed that 33 individuals at CHR were likely similar to HC (CHR-HC), and the remaining 24 CHR individuals were similar to SZ (CHR-SZ). The CHR subgroups were comparable to each other in demographic characteristics and clinical symptoms. However, the verbal and executive functions of CHR-HC were similar to those of HC, and those of CHR-SZ similar to SZ. Additionally, CHR-SZ was more responsive to treatment than CHR-HC during the follow-up period. By combining structural and functional data, we could detect the vulnerable population and provide an active intervention in the early phase of the CHR state.</P>

The antidiabetic effect of Calcium Ion Water<SUP>®</SUP> (CIW<SUP>®</SUP>) was investigated in neonatal streptozotocin (90 ㎎/㎏, i.p.)-induced noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in Sprague Dawley rats. The rats were divided into three groups: normal control, NIDDM control, and NIDDM + CIW<SUP>®</SUP>. CIW<SUP>®</SUP> treatment for 8 weeks resulted in a significant decrease in the concentration of blood glucose and an increase in the level of serum insulin in NIDDM rats. The blood glucose and serum insulin levels were significantly lower and higher, respectively, than those of the NIDDM control group after 4 weeks of CIW<SUP>®</SUP> treatment. The changes of body weight in all experimental groups were not different among normal control, NIDDM control, and NIDDM + CIW<SUP>®</SUP>. In conclusion, these results indicate that CIW<SUP>®</SUP> can be used as an antidiabetic functional drink because it increases insulin level in blood and concomitantly decreases blood glucose level.

<P>Population biology and feeding habits of the nephropidlobsterMetanephrops thomsoni (Bate) was studied from a field survey sampled with bottom trawls in the East China Sea. The female/male ratio was 1.06:1. Three size-class groups were discriminated for both sexes, which may correspond to one to three year-old cohorts. The average stage fecundity was 471 in each brood. Larger than two-year-size-class females are multi broods during the breeding season. Gut analysis showed that this lobster is a common camivore and mainly consume crustaceans and fishes, regardless of sex and carapace length size.</P>

As a part of efforts to elucidate the influence of Panax Ginseng upon nucleic acid content of various tissues, a study was carried out which measured cerebellar contents of RNA and DNA following administration of ginseng. Twenty male mice (body weight: 18-20 gm) were equally divided into a ginseng and a saline group. Once a day for 5 days they received subcutaneously 0.05 ml/10 gm body weight of ginseng ?extract solution (4 mg of ginseng alcohol extract in 1 ml of saline), and the same amount of saline, respectively. On the 5th experimental day, all animals were sacrificed 2 hours after the last medication and their cerebellar tissue was removed. Cerebellar RNA and DNA contents were measured using the chemical method of Schmidt-Thannhauser-Schneder. Results obtained were as follows: 1. Cerebellar RNA and DNA contents were significantly higher in the ginseng group than in the saline group. 2. RNA/DNA ratio of the cerebellar tissue was much lower in the ginseng group than in the saline group due to a more remarkable increase in DNA than in RNA content following administration of ginseng. The ginseng is, inferred to augment RNA and, especially, DNA contents of cerebellar tissue in mice.

The polydactyly and the syndactyly are the most common congenital hand and foot anomalies, these are not uncommonly combines. These may result from abnormal break-up or necrosis of the apical ectodermal ridge in the 7th and 8th weeks of fetal development. We report a patient, who had the polydactyly and the syndactyly in both hands and feet.

Background/Aims: To investigate whether serum Wisteria floribunda agglutinin-positive human Mac-2-binding protein (WFA+-M2BP) can predict the recurrence of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative resection. Methods: Patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) who underwent curative resection for HCC between 2004 and 2015 were eligible for the study. Recurrence was sub-classified as early (<2 years) or late (≥2 years). Results: A total of 170 patients with CHB were selected. During the follow-up period (median, 22.6 months), 64 (37.6%) patients developed recurrence. In multivariate analyses, WFA+-M2BP level was an independent predictor of overall (hazard ratio [HR]=1.490), early (HR=1.667), and late recurrence (HR=1.416), together with male sex, des-gamma carboxyprothrombin level, maximal tumor size, portal vein invasion, and satellite nodules (all P<0.05). However, WFA+- M2BP level was not predictive of grade B-C posthepatectomy liver failure. The cutoff value that maximized the sum of sensitivity (30.2%) and specificity (90.6%) was 2.14 (area under receiver operating characteristic curve=0.632, P=0.010). Patients with a WFA+-M2BP level >2.14 experienced recurrence more frequently than those with a WFA+-M2BP level ≤2.14 (P=0.011 by log-rank test), and had poorer postoperative outcomes than those with a WFA+-M2BP level ≤2.14 in terms of overall recurrence (56.0 vs. 34.5%, P=0.047) and early recurrence (52.0 vs. 20.7%, P=0.001). Conclusions: WFA+-M2BP level is an independent predictive factor of HBV-related HCC recurrence after curative resection. Further studies should investigate incorporation of WFA+-M2BP level into tailored postoperative surveillance strategies for patients with CHB.
