Care, Self-Interest, and Sacrifice
Manuel “Mandel” Cabrera 서울대학교 철학사상연구소 2017 철학사상 Vol.S No.-
In this paper, I attempt two major tasks. First, departing from a suggestion from Harry Frankfurt, I argue that there’s a form of caring such that when I come to care about x, x’s well-being becomes an aspect of my own; and acting for x’s sake comes to be a way of acting in my own self-interest. However, a prima facie roadblock to accepting this view is that it seems to make it difficult to make sense of the possibility of sacrificing for something I care about, and acting in a non-self-interested manner when I do so. To defend the view from this worry, I draw a distinction between brute and all-things-considered harms and benefits. Then, I argue that when the view is disambiguated with this distinction in mind, it can not only accommodate the above possibility, but has resources for making sense of what acting sacrificially consists in.

This essay presents some main features of the kick-off of 5G in India and Brazil extracting implication for Global South catchup. Based on some main neo-Schumpeterian contributions on long-waves, long-cycles, and catch-up, attention has been paid to the interstate competition between the US and China, the global pressures and linkages of the Indian and Brazilian National Systems of Innovation, and the development of key infrastructures and productive capabilities by the domestic and multinational firms involved in the kick-off of 5G. Two main Global South cases capturing the interrelated geopolitical and technological tensions of the 21st century transitioning capitalism are discussed.
Automatic Tools of Match Analysis: Inspecting Soccer Team`s Dispersion

The contracting-expanding soccer teams` relationship is one of the most important dynamic behaviors of the game. Therefore, a soccer game was analyzed using the centroid and stretch index method, while recording the team`s ball possession status (with or without ball possession). The correlation test suggest an inverse relationship between opposing teams (r (1508)=- 0.054) during all game. When considering ball possession by the teams, the results of the stretch index confirm that there are statistical differences with a small effect between the moments with and without possession of the ball for team B (F(1; 1506)=22.777; p-value≤0.001; =0.015; Power=0.998). Therefore, it was possible to confirm that the contracting -expanding relationship is an intrinsic behaviour of a soccer game in relation to ball possession.

This study documents the adjustment in the business cycles of Mexico’s states that resulted from trade liberalization. It also analyzes the relevance of the various elements that previous studies have proposed as the determining factors of the synchronization of these cycles. Our results reveal that these determinants are relevant throughout the sample period (1980-2019), but their relative importance changes over time as does their synchronization. This may be explained as follows: trade liberalization caused a regional and sectoral reallocation of resources, which in turn led to some states becoming increasingly interlinked based on their economic structures, whereas the remaining states became less synchronized with the former states. This case should be of interest to other developing countries that are dependent on the world’s capital and trade flows and whose regions may respond heterogeneously if they have diverse economic structures as those of Mexico.
Upper thigh skeletal muscle index predicts outcomes in liver transplant recipients

Purpose: The skeletal muscle index (SMI) at the L3 level is widely used to diagnose sarcopenia. The upper thigh (UT) also reflects changes in whole-body muscle mass, but no study has examined this using the UT to diagnose sarcopenia in liver transplantation (LT). This study aimed to determine an optimal cut-off value for UT-SMI and investigate how sarcopenia diagnosed by UT-SMI correlates with outcomes in LT recipients. Methods: In this retrospective study of 332 LT patients from 2018 to 2020, we investigated the association between sarcopenia diagnosed by UT-SMI and patient outcomes after LT. Results: The cut-off values for UT-SMI were 38.3 cm2/m2 for females (area under the curve [AUC], 0.927; P < 0.001) and 46.7 cm2/m2 for males (AUC, 0.898; P < 0.001). The prevalence of sarcopenia diagnosed by UT-SMI was 33.4% in our cohort. Patient and graft survival rates in the UT-SMI sarcopenia group were significantly poorer than those in the UT-SMI non-sarcopenia group (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001). UT-SMI was an independent prognostic factor for patient survival (hazard ratio [HR], 2.182; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.183–4.025; P = 0.012) and graft survival (HR, 2.227; 95% CI, 1.054–4704; P = 0.036) in our multivariable Cox analysis. Conclusion: We confirmed that sarcopenia diagnosed by UT-SMI is associated with outcomes in LT recipients. In addition, UT-SMI was identified as an independent prognostic factor for patient survival and graft survival. Therefore, UT-SMI could be a good option for CT-based evaluations of sarcopenia in LT recipients.
