      • Hierarchically three-dimensional (3D) nanotubular sea urchin-shaped iron oxide and its application in heavy metal removal and solar-induced photocatalytic degradation

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, hierarchically three-dimensional (3D) nanotubular sea urchin-shaped iron oxide nanostructures (3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) were synthesized by a facile and rapid ultrasound irradiation method. Additives, templates, inert gas atmosphere, pH regulation, and other complicated procedures were not required. Dense 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> with a relatively large Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area of 129.4 m<SUP>2</SUP>/g was synthesized within 23 min, and the BET surface area was further improved to 282.7 m<SUP>2</SUP>/g by a post heat-treatment process. In addition, this post processing led to phase changes from maghemite (γ phase) to hematite (α phase) Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>. Subsequent characterization suggested that the growth mechanism of the 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> follows self-assembly and oriented attachment. The prepared 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> was applied to wastewater purification. Ultrasound-irradiated 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> can eliminate a As(V) and Cr(VI) from water with 25 times faster removal rate by using a one third smaller amount than commercial α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>. This was attributed to the inter-particle pores and relatively positively charged surface of the nanostructure. In addition, post heat treatment on ultrasound-irradiated 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> significantly influenced the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and phenol, with a 25 times higher removal efficiency than that of commercial α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, because of both high BET surface area and good crystallization of the prepared samples.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The 3D- Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> can be mass-produced by ultrasound irradiation method. </LI> <LI> The 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> possesses high BET surface area and interconvertible phase. </LI> <LI> The 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> exhibits rapid adsorption rates for heavy metals. </LI> <LI> The 3D-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> exhibits excellent photocatalytic activities toward the dyes. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Successful Application of New Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation System in vivo Porcine Model: A Case Report

        Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is being used for management of various cardiorespiratory conditions. The aim of this study was to develop and prove the efficacy and safety of new ECMO system in vivo porcine model. Methods: Under general anesthesia, the experimental pig was undergoing mechanical ventilation with protective ventilation (volume control mode, tidal volume: 6ml/kg, Positive end expiratory pressure(PEEP) :5mmHg, Respiratory rate(RR) :10/min, I:E ratio :1:2, FIO2 :0.21) and femoral cannulation for new ECMO system using the single-site double lumen catheter. Except membrane oxygenator, whole device was newly developed including centrifugal pump and control unit with multi-functioned sensors. We monitored cardiovascular and respiratory status and checked metabolic parameters from arterial blood samples periodically for evaluation of the gas exchange, hemolysis and coagulation parameters. ACT was checked for heparinization. The pig was followed up to 12 hours. Results: The pig showed cardiovascular and hemodynamic stability for 12 hours without bleeding or clotting complications showing stable oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal (Figure 1). Conclusions: We established new ECMO system proving safety and efficacy with adequate oxygenation and carbon dioxide removal in a preclinical in vivo porcine model.

        Comprehensive RNA-sequencing analysis of colorectal cancer in a Korean cohort

        Considering the recent increase in the number of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases in South Korea, we aimed to clarify the molecular characteristics of CRC unique to the Korean population. To gain insights into the complexities of CRC and promote the exchange of critical data, RNA-sequencing analysis was performed to reveal the molecular mechanisms that drive the development and progression of CRC; this analysis is critical for developing effective treatment strategies. We performed RNA-sequencing analysis of CRC and adjacent normal tissue samples from 214 Korean participants (comprising a total of 381 including 169 normal and 212 tumor samples) to investigate differential gene expression between the groups. We identified 19,575 genes expressed in CRC and normal tissues, with 3,830 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the groups. Functional annotation analysis revealed that the upregulated DEGs were significantly enriched in pathways related to the cell cycle, DNA replication, and IL-17, whereas the downregulated DEGs were enriched in metabolic pathways. We also analyzed the relationship between clinical information and subtypes using the Consensus Molecular Subtype (CMS) classification. Furthermore, we compared groups clustered within our dataset to CMS groups and performed additional analysis of the methylation data between DEGs and CMS groups to provide comprehensive biological insights from various perspectives. Our study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying CRC in Korean patients and serves as a platform for identifying potential target genes for this disease. The raw data and processed results have been deposited in a public repository for further analysis and exploration.

        양파 파치 추출물이 유기농 양파성에 미치는 영향

        양파는 2모작 작물로써 소득이 큰 작물이면서 건강에 좋은 기능성분이 많이 함유하고 있어 생산자와 소비자에게 인기가 높은 식품이다. 최근 건강과 환경을 중시하는 생활패턴 때문에 소비자는 유기농 양파를 더 선호할 것으로 예상되나 자연생태계를 고려하면서 안정적이고 건강한 먹거리를 생산하기는 매우 어렵다. 유기농법의 한계를 극복하고자 양파 잔재물에서 증류법으로 양파 추출액을 채취하여 유기농양파 재배기간 중에 500배로 희석하여 7번 되돌려 주고 생산성과 관련된 생육, 수량, 양분 및 토양미생물을 비교한 결과는 다음과 같았다. 1. 양파의 생육은 대체로 대조구<순환구<관행구 순으로 좋았으며, 초기에는 순환구가 관행구보다 현저히 불량하였으나 후기에 갈수록 처리간 차이가 줄어져 비슷하였다. 2. 양파의 수량은 순환구가 대조구보다 9.3% 증가되었고 관행구보다 11.0% 감소되었으며, 300 g 이상 구중 분포비율이 높을수록 수량도 많아지는 경향이었다. 3. 양파의 무기성분 함량은 순환구가 대조구와 관행구보다 많았으며, 특히 인산, 철, 아연 함량 등은 관행구에 비하여 47%, 78%, 172% 현저히 증가되었다. 4. 양파의 유기성분 함량은 순환구가 대조구와 관행구보다 많았으며, 퀘세틴 함량은 순환구가 대조구와 관행구에 비하여 각각 33.9%, 44.0% 증가되었다. 5. 토양의 내생 균근균은 순환구가 대조구와 관행구에 비하여 각각 40%, 31.7% 더 많았고 미생물 스트레스 지표는 순환구가 대조구와 관행구에 비하여 15%, 20% 감소되었다. This study evaluated the close crop recycling method by using the extract from defective onions. The mixture of the diluted extract (1/500) and nutrients was applied seven times on the onion leaves without spilling it onto the field. The yield and quality of the onions produced by this method (recycle) were compared to those grown organically (control) and conventionally (normal). The yield from the recycling field was increased significantly by 9% compared to that of the control field, while it was decreased by 11% compared to the normal field (p < 0.05). This lower yield was explained by the differences of the mulching vinyl and the fertilizers between the treatments which effect the onion growth during the winter. The content of quercetin in the onions from the recycling filed was increased significantly by 34% and 44% compared to those of the control and normal field, respectively (p < 0.05). It seemed that minerals and biologically active substances in the defective onion extract were effective in increasing the onion growth. In terms of soil microbial biomass, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi was increased significantly in the recycle field by 40.1% and 30.6% compared to those of the control and normal fields, respectively (p < 0.05). On the other hand, microbial stress (cy19:0/18:1w7c) was decreased in the recycle field by 21.0% and 14.1% compared to those of the control and normal fields, respectively.

        Property of the Jussive Head in Korean Jussives

        This paper aims to examine (ⅰ) if Agree for the identification of jussive subjects in Pak, Portner and Zanuttini (2008a,b) (PPZ) and Zanuttini, Pak, and Portner (2011) (ZPP) is properly formulated (ⅱ) how the subjects of jussive complements in Korean are identified. It is argued that the precise formulation of Agree has not been applied to the analysis of jussives in PPZ, but the agreement relation in ZPP is better formulated fitting the original Agree operation. It is proposed that whereas root jussives may have the Jussive head with person features, embedded jussives may have the Jussive head without person features as the T head does not have phi-features in non-finite clauses. The embedded Jussive head with the fixed person feature value leads PPZ to assume the reference shifting mechanism by which the process to identify the subjects of jussive complements is complicated: valuation by Agree and then reference shifting. It is argued that without person features on the embedded Jussive head, the movement theory of control (MTC) is able to identify the subjects of jussive complements without recourse to the reference shifting mechanism.

        Comprehensive profiling of DNA methylation in Korean patients with colorectal cancer

        Alterations in DNA methylation play an important pathophysiological role in the development and progression of colorectal cancer. We comprehensively profiled DNA methylation alterations in 165 Korean patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), and conducted an in-depth investigation of cancer-specific methylation patterns. Our analysis of the tumor samples revealed a significant presence of hypomethylated probes, primarily within the gene body regions; few hypermethylated sites were observed, which were mostly enriched in promoter-like and CpG island regions. The CpG Island Methylator Phenotype- High (CIMP-H) exhibited notable enrichment of microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H). Additionally, our findings indicated a significant correlation between methylation of the MLH1 gene and MSI-H status. Furthermore, we found that the CIMP-H had a higher tendency to affect the right-side of the colon tissues and was slightly more prevalent among older patients. Through our methylome profile analysis, we successfully verified the methylation patterns and clinical characteristics of Korean patients with CRC. This valuable dataset lays a strong foundation for exploring novel molecular insights and potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of CRC.

        A Raising-to-Object Analysis of Korean ECM Constructions

          The Korean ECM constructions are accounted for in terms of Raising to Object (RTO) in this paper. First, I propose that Korean ECM constructions are not actually ECMed but raised to the matrix Spec of VP by raising to object (RTO) (Postal 1974 and Lasnik and Saito 1991). Data related with Binding Condition A and B, passivization, sentential adverb placement, floated quantifiers, NPI, scope, scrambling, cleft constructions, and others are provided to support the claim that the complement subject is actually raised. Second, I propose that raising of the complement subject to the matrix clause is not optional as argued in Yang (2003) but obligatory. Third, adopting Miyagawa (2005) and Chomsky (2005, 2(06), I propose that the V-focus feature inherited from the phase head v makes RTO possible, providing both accusative Case checking and focus reading at the matrix V. Forth, it is claimed that the Spec of CP is analyzed as an A-position by the manner the position is derived following Chomsky (2005).

        Risk of cesarean section after induced versus spontaneous labor at term gestation

        To investigate whether the cesarean section (CS) rate is increased in women whose labor was induced compared to thosewho had spontaneous labor at term pregnancy.A retrospective study was performed in women whose labor was either induced (induction group, n=497) or spontaneous (spontaneous group, n=878) at 37+0 to 41+6 weeks of gestation from January 2008 to June 2009. Maternal age, parity, body mass index (BMI), Bishop scores, gestational age, hypertension, diabetes, delivery mode, indications for CS, neonatal outcome were compared between the two groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between the CS rate and labor induction after adjusting for potential confounding variables.CS (17.3% vs. 5.3%, P<0.001) and vacuum-assisted delivery (10.7% vs. 6.4%, P<0.001) rates were significantly higher in the induction group compared to the spontaneous group. The CS rate in the induction group was higher than the spontaneous group not only in nulliparous women (25.3% vs. 8.6%, P<0.001), but also in multiparous women (3.8% vs. 0.3%, P=0.002). However, after adjusting confounding factors, the higher CS rate was significantly associated with advanced maternal age, higher BMI, lower Bishop scores and nulliparity, with no demonstrable tie to labor induction. Neonatal outcome in the two groups were comparable.Although CS rate was higher in women whose labor was induced than those who had spontaneous labor, this higher rate was associated with maternal age, BMI, Bishop scores and parity, but was not impacted by labor induction per se.

        WTC in EMI: Correlational Factors and College Learners' Perceptions

        This paper investigates the differences in college learners' perceptions and correlations of factors related to willingness to communicate (WTC) in an English mediated instruction (EMI) class. Based on a survey of 50 collegiates (33 males, 17 females) and two rounds of interviews with 15 students, the t-tests showed that there were not many statistical differences depending on learner characteristics except the learners' grade difference affecting their perception of improvement in English. However, depending on the course types, the Kruskal-Wallis test showed statistically significant differences in the categories of present level of participation, expected level of participation with L1 option, question & answer, group collaboration, active listening, and preference to EMI with L1 option. Furthermore, the factors of WTC appeared strongly correlated with their perceptions on the improvement in English, increased confidence, and the extent of learning in the EMI class. According to qualitative analyses of open-ended questions in the survey and interviews, the learners thought group presentations in English were most difficult. They also responded that their low English proficiency, peer pressure, and the student-orientedness in class made them passive and less confident. The learners, however, adopted diverse coping strategies to overcome such difficulties. They were also positive about the limited use of L1 in the EMI class. Implications for EMI are suggested.
