The purpose of this study was to compare the EMG activities of four-forearm muscles during Kumdo head striking. The four skilled and unskilled Kumdo club members were selected from D university in B city. Investigated muscles were left brachioradialis, right brachioradialis and left flexor carpi radialis, right flexor carpi radialis. Raw EMG data were collected during the head striking motions and the average EMG were calculated by the frame width of 0.05s, and then the average %MVC were calculated. The average %MVC values of each muscle in each group were compared. The results are as follows. 1) In each group, there were no significant statistical differences between every muscle over the all phases. 2) There were significant differences, however, between skilled group and unskilled group. The former got higher average %MVC at left flexor carpi radialis and the latter at right brachioradialis in the ready phase and in the impact phase.

Background: The chemical constituents of Panax ginseng are changed by processing methods such as steaming or sun drying. In the present study, the chemical change of Panax ginseng induced by steaming was monitored in situ. Methods: Samples were separated from the same ginseng root by incision during the steaming process, for in situ monitoring. Sampling was sequentially performed in three stages; FG (fresh ginseng) / SG (steamed ginseng) / RG (red ginseng) and 60 samples were prepared and freeze dried. The samples were then analyzed to determine 43 constituents among three stages of P. ginseng. Results: The results showed that six malonyl-ginsenoside (Rg1, Rb1, Rb3, Rc, Rd, Rb2) and 15 amino acids were decreased in concentration during the steaming process. In contrast, ginsenoside-Rh1, 20(S)-Rg2, 20(S, R)-Rg3 and Maillard reaction product such as AF (arginine-fructose), AFG (arginine-fructoseglucose), and maltol were newly generated or their concentrations were increased. Conclusion: This study elucidates the dynamic changes in the chemical components of P. ginseng when the steaming process was induced. These results are thought to be helpful for quality control and standardization of herbal drugs using P. ginseng and they also provide a scientific basis for pharmacological research of processed ginseng (Red ginseng).

<P><B>Background and Aim</B></P> <P>This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of scheduled second-look endoscopy (EGD) with endoscopic hemostasis on peptic ulcer rebleeding and to identify the risk factors related to the need for second-look EGD.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>We prospectively randomized patients who had endoscopically confirmed bleeding peptic ulcer with stigmata of active bleeding, visible vessel, or adherent clot into 2 groups between August 2010 and January 2013. Hemoclip application or thermal coagulation and/or epinephrine injection were allowed for initial endoscopic therapy. The same dosage of proton pump inhibitor was injected intravenously. The study group received scheduled second-look EGD 24 to 36 hours after the initial hemostasis, and further therapy was applied if endoscopic stigmata persisted, as above. Those patients who developed rebleeding underwent operation or radiologic intervention despite the additional endoscopic therapy. Outcome measures included rebleeding, amount of transfusion, duration of hospitalization, and mortality.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>After initial endoscopic hemostasis, 319 eligible patients were randomized into 2 groups. Sixteen (10.1%) and 9 (5.6%) patients developed rebleeding (<I>P</I> = .132), respectively. There was also no difference in surgical intervention (0, 0% vs 1, .6%, <I>P</I> >.999) or radiologic intervention (3, 1.9% vs 2, 1.2%, <I>P</I> = .683), median duration of hospitalization (6.0 vs 5.0 days, <I>P</I> = .151), amount of transfusion (2.4 ± 1.7 vs 2.2 ± 1.6 units, <I>P</I> = .276), and mortality (2, 1.3% vs 2, 1.2%, <I>P</I> > .999) between the 2 groups. Multivariate analysis showed that grades 3 to 4 of endoscopists’ estimation to success of initial hemostasis, history of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and larger amounts of blood transfusions (≥4 units of red blood cells) were the independent risk factors of rebleeding.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>A single EGD with endoscopic hemostasis is not inferior to scheduled second-look endoscopy in terms of reduction in rebleeding rate of peptic ulcer bleeding. Repeat endoscopy would be helpful in the patients with unsatisfactory initial endoscopic hemostasis, use of NSAIDs, and larger amounts of transfused blood. Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by fibrous obliteration of intrahepatic bile ductules. Although the etiopathogenesis of PBC remains unclear, several studies suggest that a disordered immune response may be involved. This disease is commonly associated with various autoimmune diseases, such as Sjogren`s syndrome, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto`s thyroiditis, polymyositis, and pernicious anemia. More than 80% of cases with PBC are accompanied by at least one autoimmune disorder, and 40% by two or more. Sjogren`s syndrome, defined by dry eyes and xerostomia, may be found in 69 to 81% of PBC patients. However, concurrent coexistence of PBC and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has been rarely described in the literature. We report a 46-year-old female with PBC and Sjogren`s syndrome who also satisfied a classification criteria of SLE.

Density of malaria vector mosquito was monitored at 24 sites in Korea to estimate malaria epidemic from 2004 to 2009. Twenty four locations include six in Gwangwon province and nine in Kyonggi province and nine in Incheon metropolitan city. Mosquitoes collected by public health centers in 24 sites were sent to each RIPHE(Research Institute of Public Health & Environment) then the RIPHE identified the malaria vector mosquitoes. KCDC analysed the results. Number of malaria vector mosquito collected in 2009 shapely decreased over 33 % when compared with number of mosquito collected from 2004 to 2009. In 2009, malaria vector mosquitoes firstly were collected at Injegun on 2nd week of April (6-13, April) and the highest peak of collected mosquito was demonstrated on 3rd week of August. Number of collected mosquito sharply decreased below 10 at 3rd week of september and None of mosquito was collected 2nd week October. Decrease of number of malaria vector mosquito collected in 2009 seem to be related with lowest temperature around midnight and precipitation days per month.

Afferent loop syndrome (ALS) accompanying acute pancreatitis is characterized by abdominal pain, vomiting and elevation of serum amylase. Thus, it is difficult to differentiate ALS from other causes of acute pancreatitis. However, the history of gastrectomy can be an important clue for diagnosing ALS. We experienced two cases of ALS accompanying acute pancreatitis. The laboratory findings of the patients showed elevation of serum amylase and they were initially diagnosed as only acute pancreatitis. However, the diagnosis were modified as ALS with the aid of computed tomography. After appropriate management, the abdominal pain disappeared and serum amylase level decreased. In conclusion, ALS should be considered as a cause of acute pancreatitis in patients who have the elevated level of serum amylase and a history of gastrectomy.
