    The purpose of this study is to multi-dimensionally find the positive and potential of middle-aged single-parents women, with regard to their adaptations. Therefore, mixed research methodology of quantitative and qualitative methods was used.
    The quantitative research attempted to examine the mediating effects of social supports and meanings of life in order to understand how the gender role conflict of middle-aged single-parents women leads to posttraumatic growth. For the analysis of structure model, data from 241 middle-aged single-parents women in 40s-50s were used, who have lived with one or more children and were divorced or bereaved more than 2 years ago, when they were over 40. The result of analysis suggests that the gender role conflict affects the posttraumatic growth through the medium of meaning of life and social supports. This result not only proves the firmness of gender role conflict having an affect on psychological adaptations, and the behaviors of individuals across the whole lives after the gender roles were formed at very early ages but also suggests that for the middle-aged single-parents women, the gender role conflict may be the access factor to posttraumatic growth.
    Qualitative research uses life history narrative, and study method. Data were collected from the meeting with 8 participants in order to understand the meanings and experiences of middle-aged single-parents women. The analysis of data from the depth interviews focused on the circular relationship among living, telling, re-telling, re-living of life history narrative. Moreover, it was believed that a life is processed in the time and space in which it is converted into a story, while the middle-aged single-parents women's process narrative were reorganized, their lives were also newly meaningful. The experiences of participants were suggested as 7 themes : <Living as Other in Subject>, <Recognition of Burden of Caring>, <Awakening from Myth ‘Blame It on Me’>, <Contacting with Force Disturbing Relationship>, <Responsibility for Life>, <Redefinition of Relationship> and <Finding out Real Me>. This findings suggests that in the context of internalization of gender roles and posttraumatic growth, although women internalized the responsibility for peace and caring of family their own gender roles in patriarchal family system and they undergone passive endurance with their individual desires oppressed, they gradually experienced the change of recognition, that is, the realization of inconveniences of their gender roles.
    The experiences of middle-aged single-parents women commonly found in findings of structure model and life history narrative researches showed changes of meanings in three aspects : the meanings of caring, relationship and self are not separated but formed the circular relationship in the context of internalization of gender roles and posttraumatic growth.
    The findings have some significances as follows.
    First, it has the significance for finding the positive of middle-aged single-parents women.
    Second, it was empirically found that heavy responsibility for nurturance and houseworks, caring for others more than themselves, fear for unattractiveness, fear for being victim and oppression of their insistences had an affect on the psychological health in which the gender role conflict of middle-aged single-parents women.
    Third, the empirical data which is supportive to the growth and adaptation process of middle-aged single-parents women by searching for the structural relationship in which the gender role conflict of middle-aged single-parents women affect the posttraumatic growth through the medium of meaning of life and social support, the affirmative psychological variables.
    Fourth, the usefulness of counseling applications of narrative explorations were verified.
    Firth, as an exploratory basic research, it extends the understandings of study phenomena, that is, the affirmative finding of middle-aged single-parents women by using the mixed research methodology of quantitative and qualitative researches.
    Findings provide following suggestions of counseling the actual.
    First, an opportunity to explore and correct the contents of gender role internalized is necessary when the middle-aged single-parents women are counseled. Therefore, when the middle-aged single-parents women report the difficulty of interpersonal relationship or psychological distress depending on changes of their roles, a counseling strategy to consider the integrate meanings of caring, relationship and self.
    Second, it suggests that the intervention strategy suitable for process variables be established in counseling, given the fact that the gender role conflict affect the posttraumatic growths through social supports and meaning of life.
    Third, the experiences of middle-aged single-parents women suggest that distresses are individual but an ability to cure the traumatic injury be nurtured. Hence, it may be a proper intervention strategy to understand the commonness and discrimination of growth revealed in the posttraumatic growth experiences by periods of adaptations and develop the counseling program based on the understandings.
    Fourth, an intervention to help to have a new perspective on social gender and find the positive of lives by giving the counseling program to middle-aged single-parents women, which can reorganize the experiences in the circular relationship of narrative.
    Fifth, self-realization task needs to be explored in counseling with middle-aged single-parents women. It also may be an important intervention strategy for counseling to help clients to confront with a fact that middle-aged is the period in which they make a relationship with their unconscious world, the forgotten inner one again, conduct an integrated experience accessing themselves and have an opportunity to specifically apply it.

    본 연구의 목적은 중년여성 한부모의 적응과 관련하여 그들의 잠재력과 긍정성을 다차원적으로 발견하는 데 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 위하여 양적 연구와 질적 연구의 혼합 연구방법을 사용하였다.
    양적 연구는 중년여성 한부모의 성역할갈등이 어떻게 외상 후 성장에 이르게 되는지에 대해 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미의 매개효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 구조모형 분석을 위하여 40세 이후에 배우자와 사별하였거나 또는 이혼한 뒤 2년 이상 경과하였고, 한 명 이상의 자녀와 함께 생활하고 있으며, 재혼하지 않은 40대-50대 중년여성 한부모 241명의 자료를 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 성역할갈등이 외상 후 성장에 영향을 미치며, 삶의 의미를 매개로 외상 후 성장에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또, 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미를 매개로 하여 외상 후 성장에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 생의 초기에 형성되어 전 생애에 걸쳐 개인의 심리적 적응과 행동에 영향을 미치는 성역할갈등의 견고함을 확인한 것이기도 하지만, 중년여성 한부모에게 있어서 성역할갈등이 외상 후 성장에 대한 접근 요인이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
    질적 연구는 중년여성 한부모는 성역할 내면화 과정을 어떻게 경험하며, 그 경험에서 나타나는 외상 후 성장의 주제는 무엇인지를 이해하고자 생애사 내러티브 연구방법을 사용하였다. 참여자 8명의 심층면담 자료는 삶의 이야기를 살아가기(living), 삶의 이야기를 말하기(telling), 삶의 이야기를 다시 말하기(re-telling), 삶의 이야기를 다시 살아가기(re-living)의 내러티브 순환 과정에 초점을 두고 분석하였다. 또한, 삶은 이야기되는 순간의 시간과 공간 속에서 실행되며 과정적 내러티브가 재구성되는 동안 중년여성 한부모의 삶 역시 새롭게 의미화된다고 보았다. 참여자들의 경험은 ‘성역할 내면화와 외상 후 성장’ 맥락에서 <주체 안에서 타자로 살아옴>, <돌봄의 버거움을 인식함>, <문제는 모두 내 잘못이라는 신화에서 깨어나기>, <관계를 방해하는 힘과 마주침>, <삶에 대한 책임감>, <관계를 재정의함>, <진정한 나를 발견함>의 7가지 주제로 나타났다. 이러한 결과로 참여자들은 가부장적 가족제도 안에서 타인 돌봄에 대한 책임을 여성의 성역할로 내면화하였고 결혼관계에서 자신의 욕구는 억압된 채 수동적인 견딤을 경험하지만, 성역할 기대에 대한 불편함을 깨닫는 인식의 변화를 거치며 자기 발견과 성장을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다.
    구조모형 연구와 생애사 내러티브 연구 결과에서 공통적으로 발견된 중년여성 한부모의 경험은 세 가지 측면의 의미 변화인 것으로 나타났다. 돌봄의 의미, 관계의 의미, 자기(self)의 의미는 분리된 경험이 아니고 성역할 내면화와 외상 후 성장의 맥락 속에서 순환적인 관계를 형성하고 있었다.
    본 연구 결과는 다음과 같은 의의를 가진다.
    첫째, 중년여성이 경험하는 한부모됨의 의미는 자기긍정의 맥락을 형성하고 있음을 확인하였다.
    둘째, 중년여성의 성역할갈등인 양육과 가사에 대한 과중한 책임, 타인을 우선 돌봄, 매력 없음에 대한 두려움, 피해자가 되는 것에 대한 두려움, 자기주장 억제 등이 중년여성 한부모의 심리적 건강에 영향을 준다는 것을 경험적으로 확인하였다.
    셋째, 중년여성 한부모의 성역할갈등이 긍정 심리변인인 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미를 매개로 외상 후 성장에 미치는 구조적 관계를 살펴봄으로써 중년여성 한부모의 적응 과정과 성장에 도움이 될 경험적 자료를 확보하였다.
    넷째, 내러티브 탐색의 상담적 활용에 대한 유용성을 확인하였다.
    다섯째, 혼합 연구방법을 사용하여 중년여성 한부모의 긍정성 발견이라는 연구 현상에 대한 이해를 확장하는 탐색적 연구로서 의의가 있다.
    혼합 연구방법을 사용하여 나타난 본 연구 결과는 상담 실제에 다음과 같은 시사점들을 제공한다.
    첫째, 중년여성 한부모를 상담할 때 내면화한 성역할의 내용을 탐색하고 수정할 기회를 제공할 필요가 있다. 이렇게 함으로써 중년여성 한부모가 역할 변화에 따른 심리적 고통 또는 대인관계의 어려움을 호소할 때 돌봄, 관계, 자기의 의미를 통합적으로 고려할 수 있는 상담 전략을 마련할 수 있을 것이다.
    둘째, 성역할갈등이 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미를 통해 외성 후 성장에 영향을 미친다는 점을 고려했을 때 상담 과정에서 이들 과정 변인들에 대한 적절한 개입 전략을 수립할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
    셋째, 중년여성 한부모의 경험에서 드러난 것은 한부모됨의 고통은 개별적이지만 외상의 상처를 치유할 힘을 길러야 한다는 것이다. 그러므로 외상 후 성장에서 드러나는 경험의 공통성과 차별성을 적응 과정의 시기별로 이해하고, 이를 바탕으로 한 상담프로그램을 제공하는 개입 전략이 필요할 것이다.
    넷째, 중년여성 한부모가 사회적 성(gender)에 대해 새롭게 보고 삶의 긍정성을 발견하기 위해 상담을 진행할 때 내러티브를 활용할 필요가 있다. 의미치료(logotherapy)는 삶에 대한 근본적인 질문과 개인적 성찰의 내러티브를 통해 상실에서 겪게 될 공허감을 다룰 수 있으므로, 삶의 의미를 찾도록 돕는 효과적인 상담 방법의 하나가 될 수 있을 것이다.
    다섯째, 중년여성 한부모를 상담할 때 자기실현 과제를 탐색할 필요가 있다. 중년기가 지금까지 잊어버렸던 내면세계인 무의식 세계와 다시 관계를 맺는 시기임을 직면시키고 상담자는 내담자가 자기(self)에 가까워지는 통합된 경험을 하도록 촉진하며, 그것을 구체적으로 적용할 기회를 갖도록 돕는 것 또한 중요한 개입 전략이 될 것이다.

    질적 연구는 중년여성 한부모는 성역할 내면화 과정을 어떻게 경험하며, 그 경험에서 나타나는 외상 후 성장의 주제는 무엇인지를 이해하고자 생애사 내러티브 연구방법을 사용하였다. 참여자 8명의 심층면담 자료는 삶의 이야기를 살아가기(living), 삶의 이야기를 말하기(telling), 삶의 이야기를 다시 말하기(re-telling), 삶의 이야기를 다시 살아가기(re-living)의 내러티브 순환 과정에 초점을 두고 분석하였다. 또한, 삶은 이야기되는 순간의 시간과 공간 속에서 실행되며 과정적 내러티브가 재구성되는 동안 중년여성 한부모의 삶 역시 새롭게 의미화된다고 보았다. 참여자들의 경험은 ‘성역할 내면화와 외상 후 성장’ 맥락에서 <주체 안에서 타자로 살아옴>, <돌봄의 버거움을 인식함>, <문제는 모두 내 잘못이라는 신화에서 깨어나기>, <관계를 방해하는 힘과 마주침>, <삶에 대한 책임감>, <관계를 재정의함>, <진정한 나를 발견함>의 7가지 주제로 나타났다. 이러한 결과로 참여자들은 가부장적 가족제도 안에서 타인 돌봄에 대한 책임을 여성의 성역할로 내면화하였고 결혼관계에서 자신의 욕구는 억압된 채 수동적인 견딤을 경험하지만, 성역할 기대에 대한 불편함을 깨닫는 인식의 변화를 거치며 자기 발견과 성장을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다.
    구조모형 연구와 생애사 내러티브 연구 결과에서 공통적으로 발견된 중년여성 한부모의 경험은 세 가지 측면의 의미 변화인 것으로 나타났다. 돌봄의 의미, 관계의 의미, 자기(self)의 의미는 분리된 경험이 아니고 성역할 내면화와 외상 후 성장의 맥락 속에서 순환적인 관계를 형성하고 있었다.
    본 연구 결과는 다음과 같은 의의를 가진다.
    첫째, 중년여성이 경험하는 한부모됨의 의미는 자기긍정의 맥락을 형성하고 있음을 확인하였다.
    둘째, 중년여성의 성역할갈등인 양육과 가사에 대한 과중한 책임, 타인을 우선 돌봄, 매력 없음에 대한 두려움, 피해자가 되는 것에 대한 두려움, 자기주장 억제 등이 중년여성 한부모의 심리적 건강에 영향을 준다는 것을 경험적으로 확인하였다.
    셋째, 중년여성 한부모의 성역할갈등이 긍정 심리변인인 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미를 매개로 외상 후 성장에 미치는 구조적 관계를 살펴봄으로써 중년여성 한부모의 적응 과정과 성장에 도움이 될 경험적 자료를 확보하였다.
    넷째, 내러티브 탐색의 상담적 활용에 대한 유용성을 확인하였다.
    다섯째, 혼합 연구방법을 사용하여 중년여성 한부모의 긍정성 발견이라는 연구 현상에 대한 이해를 확장하는 탐색적 연구로서 의의가 있다.
    혼합 연구방법을 사용하여 나타난 본 연구 결과는 상담 실제에 다음과 같은 시사점들을 제공한다.
    첫째, 중년여성 한부모를 상담할 때 내면화한 성역할의 내용을 탐색하고 수정할 기회를 제공할 필요가 있다. 이렇게 함으로써 중년여성 한부모가 역할 변화에 따른 심리적 고통 또는 대인관계의 어려움을 호소할 때 돌봄, 관계, 자기의 의미를 통합적으로 고려할 수 있는 상담 전략을 마련할 수 있을 것이다.
    둘째, 성역할갈등이 사회적 지지와 삶의 의미를 통해 외성 후 성장에 영향을 미친다는 점을 고려했을 때 상담 과정에서 이들 과정 변인들에 대한 적절한 개입 전략을 수립할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
    셋째, 중년여성 한부모의 경험에서 드러난 것은 한부모됨의 고통은 개별적이지만 외상의 상처를 치유할 힘을 길러야 한다는 것이다. 그러므로 외상 후 성장에서 드러나는 경험의 공통성과 차별성을 적응 과정의 시기별로 이해하고, 이를 바탕으로 한 상담프로그램을 제공하는 개입 전략이 필요할 것이다.
    넷째, 중년여성 한부모가 사회적 성(gender)에 대해 새롭게 보고 삶의 긍정성을 발견하기 위해 상담을 진행할 때 내러티브를 활용할 필요가 있다. 의미치료(logotherapy)는 삶에 대한 근본적인 질문과 개인적 성찰의 내러티브를 통해 상실에서 겪게 될 공허감을 다룰 수 있으므로, 삶의 의미를 찾도록 돕는 효과적인 상담 방법의 하나가 될 수 있을 것이다.
    다섯째, 중년여성 한부모를 상담할 때 자기실현 과제를 탐색할 필요가 있다. 중년기가 지금까지 잊어버렸던 내면세계인 무의식 세계와 다시 관계를 맺는 시기임을 직면시키고 상담자는 내담자가 자기(self)에 가까워지는 통합된 경험을 하도록 촉진하며, 그것을 구체적으로 적용할 기회를 갖도록 돕는 것 또한 중요한 개입 전략이 될 것이다.
