This study intends to understand the meaning and the essence of the experience of single mothers who divorced because of family violence. It applied the analytical phenomenological research methodology of Max Van Manen. Putting its focus on the essence of the experience, this study conducted existent examination, analytical phenomenological reflection, and analytical phenomenological writing. Based on the results of analyzing data collected, essential themes of experience emerged;
<The marriage was wrong from the beginning, which caused the divorce.>, <They became stable, escaping from the depression of bringing up kids alone>, <Double burden of bringing up their kids and taking the responsibility for living>, <Their husbands were bad fathers, but the mothers can't make up for the fathers' absence to the full.>, <They do their best to prevent their kids from being teased as fatherless kids.>, <They are worried about their kids' excessive behaviors.>, <Establishment of the identity of single mothers> The conclusion about single mother's experience of woman who divorced because of family violence is as follows：First, single mother experience is to consider others' thinking a lot so they cut down or re-adjust their social relations. Secondly, the participants experience difficulties in playing the double role of making a living and taking care of their children as mothers. Third, the participants feel psychologically free and easy in their current life, but they can't be free from social prejudice. Fourth, the participants feel their children's behaviors are different from the behaviors of children of other general families, and they get embarrassed. Fifth, single mother experience is to find their potentiality, escaping from the violence.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 가정폭력으로 이혼한 여성의 한부모 체험에 대한 의미와 본질이 무엇인지를 이해하는데 있다. 이에 Max Van Manen의 해석학적 현상학 연구방법을 적용하여 체험의 본질에 집중, 실존적 조사, 해석학적 현상학의 반성, 해석학적 현상학의 글쓰기로 구성된 총 10단계를 밟아 연구를 수행하였다.
본 연구의 참여자는 가정폭력으로 이혼하여 자녀를 양육하고 있는 30대 여성 한부모이며 총 7명이 연구에 참여하였다. 총 자료수집 기간은 2008년 9월부터 2009년 5월까지 심층면담을 통한 체험 진술 자료를 수집하였으며, 그 외에도 그림, 시 등을 수집하였다. 이와 더불어 여성 한부모에 대한 이해를 돕기 위해 문학 및 예술작품, 인터넷, 대중매체를 통해 접한 다양한 자료를 수집하였다.
연구 참여자들의 체험 진술과 다양하게 수집된 자료를 토대로 하여 분석한 결과 <시작부터 잘못된 결혼으로 인해 이혼을 초래함>, <홀로 자녀를 양육해야하는 절망감에서 점차 안정을 찾게 됨>, <자녀양육과 동시에 생계유지를 책임져야하는 이중적 부담>, <혼자 생활이 홀가분하나 사회적 편견에 신경이 쓰임>, <못난 아빠였지만 엄마가 채워주지 못하는 아빠의 빈자리>, <아빠 없는 자식이란 소리 듣지 않게 혼신을 다함>, <아이가 보이는 지나친 행동이 걱정스러움>, <한부모로 살아가는 정체성 확립>의 총 8개의 대주제 아래 19개의 하위 주제들로 본질적 주제를 범주화하였다.
이와 같이 도출해낸 본질적 주제를 통해 가정폭력으로 이혼한 여성의 한부모 체험에 관한 의미와 본질은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 여성의 한부모 체험은 주변 사람들을 의식하며 사회적 관계들을 재조정하는 경험이다. 둘째, 여성의 한부모 체험은 부양자의 역할과 어머니의 역할을 이중적으로 감당함에 있어 어려운 체험이다. 셋째, 여성의 한부모 체험은 이혼한 현재 생활에 대해 심리적으로 홀가분한 반면에 사회적 편견에 자유롭지 못하는 체험이다. 넷째, 여성의 한부모 체험은 자신의 자녀가 보이는 행동이 일반 가정 아동과는 다르다고 느끼는 당혹스러운 경험이다. 다섯째, 가정폭력으로 이혼한 여성의 한부모 체험은 폭력에서 벗어나는 상황을 직면하면서, 자신의 잠재력을 발견하게 되는 경험이다.
