Response of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to salt‐stressed maize plants

        Wang Zai‐Ling,Haseeb Muhammad,Zhang Run‐Zhi 한국곤충학회 2021 Entomological Research Vol.51 No.11

Salt-stressed maize is an economically important crop in many arid and semi-arid regions of the world where soil salinization is most common, and the invasive fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda threatens global maize production. It thus poses a puzzle of whether FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants are becoming more or less invasive. Here, we evaluated the FAW response to salt-stressed maize plants by examining effects of salt-stressed maize plants on FAW survival, development and fecundity. We found a longer larval development time (salt-stressed, 12.9 ± 0.8 d; non-stressed, 11.3 ± 0.4 d), but unaffected survival rate and pupal mass accumulation in FAW feeding on salt-stressed maize plants. Moreover, the lifetime egg production of FAW females feeding on salt-stressed maize plants (633.5 ± 62.7 eggs) was reduced by nearly half compared with those feeding on non-stressed maize plants (1255.9 ± 70.3 eggs). Overall, FAW showed a negative response to salt-stressed maize plants. Due to limited population increase potential, FAW populations feeding on salt-stressed maize plants should pose less of a problem than ones feeding on non-stressed maize plants do. In practice, salt-stressed maize plants are quite common in arid and semi-arid regions where the relatively high-salinity groundwater is often used to irrigate maize plants, potentially limiting FAW population size. Thus, salt-stressed maize plants would contribute to practical applications of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies in controlling FAW.

Dynamical behavior of a harvest single species model on growing habitat

        Zhi Ling,Lai Zhang 대한수학회 2014 대한수학회보 Vol.51 No.5

This paper is concerned with a reaction-diffusion single species model with harvesting on n-dimensional isotropically growing domain. The model on growing domain is derived and the corresponding comparison principle is proved. The asymptotic behavior of the solution to the problem is obtained by using the method of upper and lower solutions. The results show that the growth of domain takes a positive effect on the asymptotic stability of positive steady state solution while it takes a negative effect on the asymptotic stability of the trivial solution, but the effect of the harvesting rate is opposite. The analytical ndings are validated with the numerical simulations.

The Beneficial Effects of Dietary Astragali Radix Are Related to the Regulation of Gut Microbiota and Its Metabolites

        Zhi Chai,Zhen-Yu Li,Ling Wang,Lan Yang,Xiao-Ling Cheng,Xue-Mei Qin 한국식품영양과학회 2024 Journal of medicinal food Vol.27 No.1

Astragali Radix (AR) or its extract has been used as an herbal medicine and dietary supplement in China,Europe, and the United States. The gut microbiota could provide new insights for exploring dietary supplements’ underlyingmechanism on organisms. However, no reports have focused on the regulatory effect of AR on the gut microbiota as a dietarysupplement. In this study, healthy ICR mice of either sex were divided into AR and control (CON) groups and given AR waterextract (4.55 mg/kg$day-1) or saline by gavage for 14 days, respectively. Then 16S rRNA gene sequencing and ultra-highperformanceliquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry-based fecal metabolomics wereintegrated to investigate the benefits of dietary AR. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis was also introduced toinvestigate the metabolites with highly synergistic changes. AR supplementation influenced the structure of intestinal microflora, especially enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria g_Coprobacillus, g_Prevotella, and g_Parabacteroides. AR also significantly altered the fecal metabolome, mainly related to amino acid metabolism, nucleotidemetabolism, and bile acid (BA) metabolism. Moreover, the increased secondary BAs and BA-sulfates might closely relate tointestinal microflora. These findings provide valuable insights for future research of dietary AR as a functional food.

Falcine Sinus: Incidence and Imaging Characteristics of Three-Dimensional Contrast-Enhanced Thin-Section Magnetic Resonance Imaging

        Ling Lin,Jin-Hua Lin,Jian Guan,Xiao-Ling Zhang,Jian-Ping Chu,Zhi-Yun Yang 대한영상의학회 2018 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.19 No.3

Objective: To evaluate the incidence, characteristics, and variations of the falcine sinus with contrast-enhanced threedimentional (3D) thin-section magnetic resonance (MR) images. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review identified 1531 patients (745 males and 786 females, 2 months to 85 years) who underwent cranial MR imaging including T1-weighted imaging, T2-weighted imaging, T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, contrast-enhanced 3D thin-section sagittal scans, and MR venography, from June 2014 to January 2016. The incidence, characteristics of the falcine sinus, and coexisted intracranial lesions were confirmed by two neuroradiologists. Results: Falcine sinuses were identified in 81 (38 males and 43 females) cases (5.3%, 81/1531, 5 months to 76 years of age) with calibers ranging from 2.3 mm to 17.0 mm. Three major forms of falcine sinuses were defined: arch-like (n = 47), stick-like (n = 22), and bifurcated (n = 12). Persistent falcine sinuses were found in 57 cases, among which 3 cases showed complicated cerebral anomalies, and 2 cases showed smaller straight sinuses. Recanalization of falcine sinuses were found in 24 cases, including 17 cases with tumor compression, 6 cases with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and one case with hypertrophic meningitis. Conclusion: Falcine sinus is not as rare as has been reported previously. Most falcine sinuses are not associated with congenital cerebral abnormalities. Diseases that cause increased pressure in the venous sinus may lead to recanalization of falcine sinus. Illustrating the characteristics of falcine sinus may prompt a more comprehensive understanding and diagnosis of associated diseases, and avoid potential surgical damage in the future.

A piecewise linear transverse shear transfer model for bolted side-plated beams

        Ling-Zhi Li,Chang-Jiu Jiang,Ray Kai-Leung Su,Sai-Huen Lo 국제구조공학회 2017 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.62 No.4

The performance of bolted side-plated (BSP) beams is affected by the degree of transverse partial interaction, which is a result of the interfacial slip caused by transverse shear transfer between the bolted steel plates and the reinforced concrete beams. However, explicit formulae for the transverse shear transfer profile have yet to be derived. In this paper, a simplified piecewise linear shear transfer model was proposed based on force superposition principle and simplification of shear transfer profiles derived from a previous numerical study. The magnitude of shear transfer was determined by force equilibrium and displacement compatibility condition. A set of design formulae for BSP beams under several basic load cases was also derived. Then the model was verified by test results. A worked example was also provided to illustrate the application of the proposed design formulae. This paper sheds some light on the shear force transfer mechanism of anchor bolts in BSP beams, and offers a practical method to evaluate the influence of transverse partial interaction in strengthening design.

      • Risk assessment of the Cropland Conversion Program in western China

        Zhi Ling,Xu Huili,Liu Yan,Cai Jiangfa 인하대학교 정석물류통상연구원 2009 인하대학교 정석물류통상연구원 학술대회 Vol.2009 No.10

To asses the risks of a large scale cropland conversion program in western China, an indicator system including 4 risk types, (Farmer livelihood risk, program policy risk, ecological risk and market risk) was established. Zhijin County in Guizhou Province was used as a case study, in which the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to assess the risks of the implementation of the cropland coversion program in the county. The results indicated that the risk of cropland conversion program is small. Among the 4 risk types, policy risk was the most threatening, while market risk was small. Based on an analysis of social variables of the program risks, some countermeasures are proposed for risk management of the cropland conversion program.

Random vibration analysis of train-slab track-bridge coupling system under earthquakes

        Zhi-ping Zeng,Xian-feng He,Yan-gang Zhao,Zhi-wu Yu,Ling-kun Chen,Wen-tao Xu,Ping Lou 국제구조공학회 2015 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.54 No.5

This study aimed to investigate the random vibration characteristic of train-slab track-bridge interaction system subjected to both track irregularities and earthquakes by use of pseudo-excitation method (PEM). Each vehicle subsystem was modeled by multibody dynamics. A three-dimensional rail-slabgirder-pier finite element model was created to simulate slab track and bridge subsystem. The equations of motion for the entire system were established based on the constraint condition of no jump between wheel and rail. The random load vectors of equations of motion were formulated by transforming track irregularities and seismic accelerations into a series of deterministic pseudo-excitations according to their respective power spectral density (PSD) functions by means of PEM. The time-dependent PSDs of random vibration responses of the system were obtained by step-by-step integration method, and the corresponding extreme values were estimated based on the first-passage failure criterion. As a case study, an ICE3 high-speed train passing a fifteen-span simply supported girder bridge simultaneously excited by track irregularities and earthquakes is presented. The evaluated extreme values and the PSD characteristic of the random vibration responses of bridge and train are analyzed, and the influences of train speed and track irregularities (without earthquakes) on the random vibration characteristic of bridge and train are discussed.

Deep Recurrent Neural Network for Multiple Time Slot Frequency Spectrum Predictions of Cognitive Radio

        ( Zhi-ling Tang ),( Si-min Li ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2017 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.11 No.6

The main processes of a cognitive radio system include spectrum sensing, spectrum decision, spectrum sharing, and spectrum conversion. Experimental results show that these stages introduce a time delay that affects the spectrum sensing accuracy, reducing its efficiency. To reduce the time delay, the frequency spectrum prediction was proposed to alleviate the burden on the spectrum sensing. In this paper, the deep recurrent neural network (DRNN) was proposed to predict the spectrum of multiple time slots, since the existing methods only predict the spectrum of one time slot. The continuous state of a channel is divided into a many time slots, forming a time series of the channel state. Since there are more hidden layers in the DRNN than in the RNN, the DRNN has fading memory in its bottom layer as well as in the past input. In addition, the extended Kalman filter was used to train the DRNN, which overcomes the problem of slow convergence and the vanishing gradient of the gradient descent method. The spectrum prediction based on the DRNN was verified with a WiFi signal, and the error of the prediction was analyzed. The simulation results proved that the multiple slot spectrum prediction improved the spectrum efficiency and reduced the energy consumption of spectrum sensing.
