      • Dependency of Electrochemical Performances of Silicon Lithium-Ion Batteries on Glycosidic Linkages of Polysaccharide Binders

        <P>Molecular structures of polysaccharide binders determining mechanical properties were correlated to electrochemical performances of silicon anodes for lithium-ion batteries. Glycosidic linkages (alpha and beta) and side chains (-COOH and -OH) were selected and proven as the major factors of the molecular structures. Three different single component polysaccharides were compared: pectin for a linkages versus carboxylic methyl cellulose (CMC) for beta-linkages from the linkage's standpoint, and pectin as a COOH-containing polymer and amylose as its non-COOH counterpart from the side chain's standpoint. Pectin was remarkably superior to CMC and amylose in cyclability and rate capability of battery cells based on silicon anodes. The pectin binder allowed volume expansion of silicon electrodes with keeping high porosity during lithiation due to the elastic nature the chair-to-boat conformation in a-linkages of its backbone. Physical integrity of pectin-based electrodes was not challenged during repeated lithiation/delithiation cycles without crack development that was observed in rigid CMC-based electrodes. Covalent bonds formed between carboxylic side chains of pectin and silicon surface oxide prevented active silicon mass from being detached away from electric pathways. However, hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl side chains of amylose and silicon surface oxide were not strong enough to keep the silicon mass electrochemically active after cyclability tests.</P>

        Precise base editing without unintended indels in human cells and mouse primary myoblasts

        Base editors are powerful tools for making precise single-nucleotide changes in the genome. However, they can lead to unintended insertions and deletions at the target sites, which is a significant limitation for clinical applications. In this study, we aimed to eliminate unwanted indels at the target sites caused by various evolved base editors. Accordingly, we applied dead Cas9 instead of nickase Cas9 in the base editors to induce accurate substitutions without indels. Additionally, we tested the use of chromatin-modulating peptides in the base editors to improve nucleotide conversion efficiency. We found that using both dead Cas9 and chromatin-modulating peptides in base editing improved the nucleotide substitution efficiency without unintended indel mutations at the desired target sites in human cell lines and mouse primary myoblasts. Furthermore, the proposed scheme had fewer off-target effects than conventional base editors at the DNA level. These results indicate that the suggested approach is promising for the development of more accurate and safer base editing techniques for use in clinical applications.

      • Maternal serum sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in suspected preeclampsia with twin pregnancies compared to singleton pregnancies

        Objective: To evaluate the maternal serum levels of sFlt-1, PlGF and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in suspected preeclampsia patients with twin pregnancies compared to singleton pregnancies. Methods: This was a retrospectively study on women who had received the laboratory tests including maternal serum levels of sFlt-1, PlGF and sFlt-1/PlGF ratio for the purpose of evaluation for preeclampsia at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital between March 2019 and June 2020. Two triplet pregnancies were excluded. A total of 104 singleton pregnancies and 35 twin pregnancies were included and divided into groups according to the diagnosis of preeclampsia. Obstetric and neonatal outcomes were compared in the groups classified by the well-known cut-off of the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio: below 38, 38-85, and over 85 in singletons and twins, respectively. Results: Among the study population, 35% (49/139) were diagnosed as preeclampsia (38/66 in singleton pregnancies and 11/35 in twin pregnancies). The levels of sFlt-1 and PlGF were significantly different between twins and singletons when analyzed both in the group without and with preeclampsia (p-values, all < 0.05). However, the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio were comparable between twins and singletons in the group without and with preeclampsia. The rates of preterm birth before 34 weeks of gestation were significantly different according to the cut-offs of the sFlt-1PlGF ratio in singletons (2.8% in below 38 vs. 12.5% in 38-85 vs. 43.8% in over 85, p<0.001), however the difference did not reach statistical significance in twin pregnancies. Conclusion: Unlike the sole level of sFlt-1 or PlGF, the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio in twin pregnancies with preeclampsia is not different from that in singletons. Nevertheless, the predictive value of the sFlt-1/PlGF for the adverse outcomes of preeclampsia seems to be better in singletons than twins.

      • Origin of Shape-Dependent Fluorescence Polarization from CdSe Nanoplatelets

        <P>In this study, we report the shape dependence of fluorescence polarization from colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets (NPLs). Despite the symmetry of their cubic unit cell structure, CdSe nanocrystals grow into two-dimensional platelets in the presence of acetate precursors, and the resulting NPLs exhibit polarized emission. The amount of acetate salts introduced during the synthesis plays a critical role in controlling the lateral aspect ratio of CdSe NPLs. Specifically, the more the acetate hydrate presents, the more squarelike face of NPLs emerges. As a result, we achieved CdSe NPLs with varying lateral aspect ratios ranging from 1.1 to 4.5 in our experimental conditions. At the same thickness, CdSe NPLs with higher lateral aspect ratios exhibit higher fluorescence polarization. We analyzed the shape dependence by preparing films of CdSe NPLs dropcast under an electric field and measuring emission and absorption polarizations from CdSe NPL films of known orientation parameters. The emission polarization stays nearly unchanged regardless of shape anisotropy of CdSe NPLs, while the absorption polarization is affected by the lateral aspect ratio. Now that these results allude to a likelihood that absorption polarization is responsible for the shape dependence of fluorescence polarization, we design a model to assess the correlation between the geometry of NPLs and the optical transition polarization by way of the local field effect. Theoretically estimated absorption polarization also shows shape dependence similar to experimental data, which suggests that the anisotropic local field effect is a primary denominator of shape-dependent fluorescence polarization in CdSe NPLs.</P>

      • CNN 기반 실시간 영상처리를 통한 시각장애인 스마트 보조기구

        시각장애인을 위한 국제 사회의 노력과 관심은 지속되고 있다. 하지만 아직까지 시각장애인의 안전을 위협하는 요소는 많다. 본 논문은 wearable 카메라로 실시간 영상처리를 통해 시각장애인의 근거리와 원거리에서 장애물을 검출하고 그에 대한 물체의 정보를 읽어 음성으로 전달하도록 구현하였다. 이에 더해 정확한 의약품 복용, 주의사항 그리고 복용 방법을 전달하는 기능을 구현하였다. 본 논문에서는 딥 러닝 모델 중 CNN과 하드웨어 및 소프트웨어 구현에 대한 내용을 기술하였으며, 특히 시각장애인에게 적합한 웨어러블 보조 기구를 개발해서 시각장애인들의 시각을 대체하고 안전한 의약품 복용을 돕고자 하는 것을 목표로 연구하였다. 개발 구현결과 본 논문에서 제안한 방법이 기존 시각장애인용 지팡이의 단점인 약한 내구성의 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 것을 입증하였다. 또한 CNN기반 실시간 영상처리를 통해 더욱 안전한 보행을 할 수 있다는 것과 약물오용의 경우를 방지할 수 있다는 것을 입증하였다. The attention of the international community for the visually-impaired has been increased in recent years. However, there are still many factors that threaten the safety of the blind. In this paper, through real-time image processing with a wearable camera, obstacles are detected at short and long distances from blind people and information on objects is read and delivered by mechanical voice. CNN is one of the models of deep learning, hardware and software implementation are described. In particular, we develop wearable aids suitable for blind people to replace the perspective of blind people and to help them take safe medicines. As a result of the development implementation, it was proved that the method proposed in this paper that could solve the problem of weak durability, which is a disadvantage of the existing cane for the blind. Also, it proved that CNN-based real-time image processing enables safer walking and prevents drug misuse.

        수지부 정혈과 십선혈의 관계에 대한 고찰

        Objectives : Our goals were to examine how the well points in the fingers came to be and how their placements have changed, as well as to determine how they relate to the EX-UE11 points. Methods : We reviewed the classic textbooks to understand the origin and the changes of locations of the well points in the fingers. We also compared the location and indications between well points in the fingers and EX-UE11 points. Results : At first, the tips of the fingers, which are now thought to be the locations of EX-UE11 points, were once described as containing well points. Currently, well points are positioned 0.1 F cun distal-medial (or lateral) to the medial (or lateral) corner of the nail. In addition to the locational commonality, we found similarities between the well points in the fingers and the EX-UE11 points in terms of their indications; for example, bloodletting at these places is frequently utilized to treat emergencies, including acute stroke and fever. Conclusions : We suggest that it is highly likely that well points in the fingers and EX-UE11 points were initially the same acupuncture point and later classified into two different acupuncture points, given their identical locations and indications. If the clinical relevance between the change process of the well points’ locations in the fingers and the EX-UE11 is studied in the historical literature, it is anticipated that the significance and clinical application of well points can be expanded.

        Comparison of the Effects of General and Pregnant Women’s Dentifrices on the Removal of the Dental Plaque

        Background: This study tries to compare and analyze the removal effect of dental plaque of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice and quantify the results to provide basic data so that consumers can make reasonable choices when purchasing dentifrice, and also increase interest in the dental plaque. Methods: After forming a dental plaque (carbohydrate porridge) on the labial surface of the bovine teeth, a disclosing agent was applied. Then the same experimenter brushed the surface of the bovine teeth using an electric toothbrush and took photographs using a DSLR camera. Thereafter, the residual amount of dental plaque was analyzed using the ImageJ program, and SPSS 26.0 was used for statistical processing. Results: The average residual amount of dental plaque using the general dentifrice was 11.71% for Perio, 9.45% for Cliden, and 8.47% for 2080, and the average residual amount for the three types was approximately 9.88%. The average residual amount of dental plaque of pregnant women’s dentifrice was 13.95% for Jeninmothers, 12.53% for Tntnmoms, and 12.63% for Mommiracle, and the average residual amount of the three types was approximately 13.04%. On comparing the average residual amount of dental plaque between general and pregnant women’s dentifrices, it was observed to be 3.16% higher for the latter. However, the results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: According to the research results, there was no significant difference in removal effects of general dentifrice and pregnant women’s dentifrice. In addition, when a pregnant woman uses the right toothbrushing method with pregnant women’s dentifrice, it can prevent or inhibit the progression of the gestational periodontal disease. Therefore, we recommend pregnant women to use pregnant women’s dentifrices.
