        DEPTH FOR TRIANGULATED CATEGORIES

        Recently a construction of local cohomology functors for compactly generated triangulated categories admitting small coproducts is introduced and studied by Benson, Iyengar, Krause, Asadollahi and their coauthors. Following their idea, we introduce the depth of objects in such triangulated categories and get that when (R, m) is a graded-commutative Noetherian local ring, the depth of every cohomologically bounded and cohomologically finite object is not larger than its dimension.

        Tissues Expression, Polymorphisms of IFN Regulatory Factor 6 (IRF6) Gene and Their Associated with Immune Traits in Three Pig Populations

        Interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6) gene is a member of the IRF-family, and plays functionally diverse roles in the regulation of the immune system. In this report, the 13,720 bp porcine IRF6 genomic DNA structure was firstly identified with a putative IRF6 protein of 467 amino acids. Alignment and phylogenetic analysis of the porcine IRF6 amino acid sequences with their homologies to other species showed high identity (over 96%). Tissues expression of IRF6 mRNA was observed by RT-PCR, the results revealed IRF6 expressed widely in eight tissues. One SNP (HQ026023:1383 G>C) in exon7 and two SNPs (HQ026023:130 G>A; 232 C>T) in the 5′ promoter region of porcine IRF6 gene were demonstrated by DNA sequencing analysis. A further analysis of SNP genotypes associated with immune traits including IFN-${\gamma}$ and IL10 concentrations in serum was carried out in three pig populations including Large White, Landraces and Songliao Black pig (a Chinese indigenous breed). The results showed that the SNP (HQ026023:1383 G>C) was significantly associated with the level of IFN-${\gamma}$ (d 20) in serum (p = 0.038) and the ratio of IFN-${\gamma}$ to IL10 (d 20) in serum (p = 0.041); The other two SNPs (HQ026023:130 G>A; 232 C>T) were highly significantly associated with IL10 level in serum both at the day 20 (p = 0.005; p = 0.001) and the day 35 (p = 0.004; p = 0.006). Identification of the porcine IRF6 gene will help our further understanding of the molecular basis of the IFN regulation pathway in the porcine immune response. All these results should indicate that the IRF6 gene can be regarded as a molecular marker associated with the IL10 level in serum and used for genetic selection in the pig breeding.

      • Molecular engineering of indoline based organic sensitizers for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells

        <P>The increasing electron-donating ability of the donor part is focused to further optimize the light-harvesting capability. Our strategy is to introduce an additional donor group into the indoline unit in the donor part to form a donor–donor structure (D–D moiety). Three different units (carbazole, fluorene and 4-methylphenyl groups) with different degrees of electron-donating capability are incorporated, thus constructing the specific donor–donor–π–acceptor (D–D–π–A) system (C-CA, F-CA and I-3) and giving a systematic view of the absorption evolution. Through molecular engineering, their light-harvesting capabilities, energy levels and photovoltaic performances were studied. As expected, utilizing strong electron-donating carbazole unit as additional donor, the IPCE spectrum of DSSC based on C-CA is successfully broadened to NIR region on the premise of suitable LUMO level, with an extraordinarily high plateau in visible region till around 700 nm. In the system of C-CA and F-CA, the introduction of <I>n</I>-pentyl group in donor part of carbazole and fluorene unit has little effect on preventing the molecular π-aggregation due to the good co-planarity of π-linker (vinyl thiophene), suggesting that the most effective way to prevent π-aggregation is still the incorporation of long alkyl groups into planar π-linker segment. However, the introducing long alkyl group can effectively prevent the electron recombination between electrons in conduction band (CB) of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and I<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>−</SUP> ions. Along with the preferable light-harvesting capability, C-CA presents excellent IPCE performance with a short-circuit photocurrent (<I>J</I><SUB>sc</SUB>) of 18.53 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>, an open-circuit photovoltage (<I>V</I><SUB>oc</SUB>) of 649 mV, a fill factor of 0.71, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency (<I>η</I>) of 8.49%.         Erythritol production by Yarrowia lipolytica mutant strain M53 generated through atmospheric and room temperature plasma mutagenesis

        Mutants of Yarrowia lipolytica with high erythritol production were generated through an atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutation system. Among these mutants, Y. lipolytica M53 exhibited the highest erythritol yield. In a batch culture, M53 produced 64.8 g/L erythritol from 100 g/L glycerol. The yields of byproducts (e.g. mannitol, arabitol, and a-ketoglutaric acid) were low, and the mechanisms underlying these changes were examined by measuring enzyme activities in the pentose phosphate pathway. Up to 145.2 g/L erythritol was produced by M53 from 200 g/L of glycerol, and erythritol accumulation was promoted by 3.7 mg/L of Cu2?, 10.15 mg/L of Mn2?, and 30.37 g/L of NaCl. Fed-batch cultivation of M53 in a 5-L fermentor produced 169.3 g/L erythritol with low levels of byproducts within 168 h. This finding confirmed the potential of M53 as an erythritol producer on a commercial scale.

        Electrospun Fibrous Silk Fibroin/Poly(L-Lactic Acid) Scaffold for Cartilage Tissue Engineering

        For successful tissue engineering of articular cartilage, a scaffold with mechanical properties that match those of natural cartilage as closely as possible is needed. In the present study, we prepared a fibrous silk fibroin (SF)/poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffold via electrospinning and investigated the morphological, mechanical, and degradation properties of the scaffolds fabricated using different electrospinning conditions, including collection distance, working voltage, and the SF:PLLA mass ratio. In addition, in vitro cell-scaffold interactions were evaluated in terms of chondrocyte adhesion to the scaffolds as well as the cytotoxicity and cytocompatibility of the scaffolds. The optimum electrospinning conditions for generating a fibrous SF/PLLA scaffold with the best surface morphology (ordered alignment and suitable diameter) and tensile strength (~1.5 MPa) were a collection distance of 20 cm, a working voltage of 15 kV, and a SF:PLLA mass ratio of S50P50. The degradation rate of the SF/PLLA scaffolds was found to be determined by the SF:PLLA mass ratio, and it could be increased by reducing the PLLA proportion. Furthermore, chondrocytes spread well on the fibrous SF/PLLA scaffolds and secreted extracellular matrix, indicating good adhesion to the scaffold. The cytotoxicity of SF/PLLA scaffold extract to chondrocytes over 24 and 48 h in culture was low, indicating that the SF/PLLA scaffolds are biocompatible. Chondrocytes grew well on the SF/PLLA scaffold after 1, 3, 5, and 7 days of direct contact, indicating the good cytocompatibility of the scaffold. These results demonstrate that the fibrous SF/PLLA scaffold represents a promising composite material for use in cartilage tissue engineering.

        Visual Fatigue Reduction Based on Depth Adjustment for DIBR System

        A depth adjustment method for visual fatigue reduction for depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) system is proposed. One important aspect of the method is that no calibration parameters are needed for adjustment. By analyzing 3D image warping, the perceived depth is expressed as a function of three adjustable parameters: virtual view number, scale factor and depth value of zero parallax setting (ZPS) plane. Adjusting these three parameters according to the proposed parameter modification algorithm when performing 3D image warping can effectively change the perceived depth of stereo pairs generated in DIBR system. As the depth adjustment is performed in simple 3D image warping equations, the proposed method is facilitative for hardware implementation. Experimental results show that the proposed depth adjustment method provides an improvement in visual comfort of stereo pairs as well as generating comfortable stereoscopic images with different perceived depths that people desire.

        Prediction of vibration and noise from steel/composite bridges based on receptance and statistical energy analysis

        The noise from the elevated lines of rail transit has become a growing problem. This paper presents a new method for the rapid prediction of the structure-borne noise from steel or composite bridges, based on the receptance and Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), which is essential to the study of the generation mechanism and the design of a low-noise bridge. First, the vertical track-bridge coupled vibration equations in the frequency domain are constructed by simplifying the rail and the bridge as an infinite Timoshenko beam and a finite Euler-Bernoulli beam respectively. Second, all wheel/rail forces acting upon the track are computed by taking a moving wheel-rail roughness spectrum as the excitation to the train-track-bridge system. The displacements of rail and bridge are obtained by substituting wheel/rail forces into the track-bridge coupled vibration equations, and all spring forces on the bridge are calculated by multiplying the stiffness by the deformation of each spring. Then, the input power to the bridge in the SEA model is derived from spring forces and the bridge receptance. The vibration response of the bridge is derived from the solution to the power balance equations of the bridge, and then the structure-borne noise from the bridge is obtained. Finally, a tri-span continuous steel-concrete composite bridge is taken as a numerical example, and the theoretical calculations in terms of the vibration and noise induced by a passing train agree well with the field measurements, verifying the method. The influence of various factors on wheel/rail and spring forces is investigated to simplify the train-track-bridge interaction calculation for predicting the vibration and noise from steel or composite bridges.

        Caspase-3 inhibitor inhibits enterovirus D68 production

        Enterovirus D68 (EVD68) is an emerging pathogen that recently caused a large worldwide outbreak of severe respiratory disease in children. However, the relationship between EVD68 and host cells remains unclear. Caspases are involved in cell death, immune response, and even viral production. We found that caspase-3 was activated during EVD68 replication to induce apoptosis. Caspase-3 inhibitor (Z-DEVDFMK) inhibited viral production, protected host cells from the cytopathic effects of EVD68 infection, and prevented EVD68 from regulating the host cell cycle at G0/G1. Meanwhile, caspase-3 activator (PAC-1) increased EVD68 production. EVD68 infection therefore activates caspase-3 for virus production. This knowledge provides a potential direction for the prevention and treatment of disease related to EVD68.

        Prebiotics enhance the biotransformation and bioavailability of ginsenosides in rats by modulating gut microbiota

        Background: Gut microbiota mainly function in the biotransformation of primary ginsenosides into bioactive metabolites. Herein, we investigated the effects of three prebiotic fibers by targeting gut microbiota on the metabolism of ginsenoside Rb1 in vivo. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were administered with ginsenoside Rb1 after a two-week prebiotic intervention of fructooligosaccharide, galactooligosaccharide, and fibersol-2, respectively. Pharmacokinetic analysis of ginsenoside Rb1 and its metabolites was performed, whilst the microbial composition and metabolic function of gut microbiota were examined by 16S rRNA gene amplicon and metagenomic shotgun sequencing. Results: The results showed that peak plasma concentration and area under concentration time curve of ginsenoside Rb1 and its intermediate metabolites, ginsenoside Rd, F2, and compound K (CK), in the prebiotic intervention groups were increased at various degrees compared with those in the control group. Gut microbiota dramatically responded to the prebiotic treatment at both taxonomical and functional levels. The abundance of Prevotella, which possesses potential function to hydrolyze ginsenoside Rb1 into CK, was significantly elevated in the three prebiotic groups (P < 0.05). The gut metagenomic analysis also revealed the functional gene enrichment for terpenoid/polyketide metabolism, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, propanoate metabolism, etc. Conclusion: These findings imply that prebiotics may selectively promote the proliferation of certain bacterial stains with glycoside hydrolysis capacity, thereby, subsequently improving the biotransformation and bioavailability of primary ginsenosides in vivo.
