        Adaptive NN Tracking Control for Periodically Time-varying Nonlinear Switching Systems

        This paper tackles the tracking control problem for a class of uncertain switching nonlinear systems with periodically time-varying parameters. To handle the unknown nonlinear functions and periodically time-varying parameters simultaneously, the radial basis function neural networks and Fourier series expansion are combined together. At the same time, the command filter approach is utilized to eliminate the “explosion of complexity” problem of the traditional backstepping technique and relax the assumption on the reference signal as well. Compared with the previous results, the filter errors are compensated by introducing the compensated signals and the upper bounds of the approximation errors are estimated as well. A compound adaptive neural network control strategy is proposed to warrant that the closed-loop system is semi-globally ultimately uniformly bounded. Two examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the reported approach.

        Amidoxime Functionalized Mesoporous SBA-15 with Various Mesostructures for Highly Efficient Concentration of U(VI)

        Many current sorbents are limited for U(VI) concentration from aqueous solutions due to their inappropriate structures and surface chemistry. Herein, we report the rapid sorption of U(VI) with high capacities and selectivity by amidoxime modified ordered mesoporous SBA-15 with two typical morphologies (i.e., rods and plates) via a post-grafting method. Variables of the geochemical conditions (contact time, pH value, initial concentration, temperature and coexisting metal ions) are investigated. The results show that the mesostructures including morphologies and pore length of SBA-15 perform the dominant function for the fast sorption kinetics (10 min for plates, 20 min for rods), while the modified amidoxime groups make the excellent U(VI) sorption capacities (646.2 mg · g -1 for plates, 499.8 mg · g -1 for rods at pH 5.0 and T 298.15 K) and high selectivity possible. U(VI) adsorbed amidoxime-functionalized SBA can also be effectively regenerated by HCl solutions and reused well after six cycles.

        Effects of lycopene on abdominal fat deposition, serum lipids levels and hepatic lipid metabolism-related enzymes in broiler chickens

        Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of lycopene on growth performance, abdominal fat deposition, serum lipids levels, activities of hepatic lipid metabolism related enzymes and genes expression in broiler chickens. Methods: A total of 256 healthy one-day-old male Arbor Acres broiler chicks were randomly divided into four groups with eight replicates of eight birds each. Birds were fed basal diet supplemented with 0 (control), 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg lycopene, respectively. Results: Dietary 100 mg/kg lycopene increased the body weight at 21 day of age compared to the control group (p<0.05). Compared to the basal diet, broilers fed diet with 100 mg/kg lycopene had decreased abdominal fat weight, and broilers fed diet with 100 and 200 mg/kg lycopene had decreased abdominal fat percentage (p<0.05). Compared to control, diets with 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg lycopene reduced the levels of total triglyceride and total cholesterol in serum, and diets with 100 and 200 mg/kg lycopene reduced the level of serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.05). The activity of fatty acid synthase (FAS) in 400 mg/kg lycopene treated broilers and the activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) in 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg lycopene treated broilers were lower than those fed basal diet (p<0.05). Lycopene increased the mRNA abundance of adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase α (AMPK-α), whereas decreased the mRNA abundance of sterol regulatory elementbinding protein 1, FAS, and ACC compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Dietary lycopene supplementation can alleviate abdominal fat deposition and decrease serum lipids levels, possibly through activating the AMPK signaling pathway, thereby regulating lipid metabolism such as lipogenesis. Therefore, lycopene or lycopenerich plant materials might be added to poultry feed to regulate lipid metabolism.         Expressing a Modified Cowpea Trypsin Inhibitor Gene to Increase Insect Tolerance Against Pieris rapae in Chinese Cabbage

        To increase the tolerance of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L. ssp. pekinensis) to Pieris rapae, weintroduced a modified cowpea trypsin inhibitor (CpTI) gene, SCK, into various cultivars. SCK was derived fromCpTI, an insect-resistance gene. The protein accumulating capacity of CpTI can be improved by adding a signalpeptide sequence at the 5' end and an endoplasmic reticulum-detained signal sequence at the 3' end. Using an optimizedAgrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation system in Chinese cabbage, we obtained a maximum transformationefficiency of ~6.83%. Insect resistance tests and CpTI enzymatic assays showed that most of the transgenic plantshad significant resistance to cabbage worm (Pieris rapae) larvae and that the plants with the highest levels of insectresistance had the greatest CpTI-related capacity, indicating a high correlation between SCK expression and insectresistance. An evaluation of segregation patterns in the independent transgenic line with the highest insect resistance,‘ZB-08-04’, showed that kanamycin resistant versus sensitive plants segregated in a 3:1 Mendelian fashion. This studyprovides a potential germplasm resource for Chinese cabbage breeding in the future.

        A New Composite Truss Bridge and a Study on Its Dynamic Characteristics with FE and Experimental Methods

        Improvements to the dynamic characteristics and stiffness of composite girder bridges are necessary to expand their applications and capabilities. The natural frequency of a bridge directly reflects the dynamic characteristics of a structure. From the calculation principle for the natural frequency, the natural frequencies of a bridge can be significantly increased if the load increases slightly while the structural stiffness increases significantly. Based on this, a new type of concrete-steel composite truss bridge is proposed. The new bridge has a reasonable new arrangement for the position of the concrete and steel, according to the bending moment law for continuous girders. The mechanical analysis of the new bridge shows that it has the characteristic of adding a small amount of load at a reasonable position, which can significantly improve the stiffness. Therefore, it is possible to achieve the purpose of improving the dynamic characteristics so that they are far better than those of a conventional composite truss bridge. To further study the dynamic characteristics of the new composite truss bridge, the finite element (FE) method was used to analyse the new bridges, and the results are compared with those of conventional composite truss bridges. Furthermore, several parameters that influence the dynamic characteristics of the new composite truss bridge were studied. Finally, the dynamic characteristics of the small-span new bridge were studied by finite element analysis (FEA) and experiment. The results show that the new composite truss bridges with different span arrangements and different second-stage dead loads always have better natural frequencies and stiffness advantages. Therefore, the new composite truss bridge is suitable for girder bridges with strict requirements for their stiffness and dynamic characteristics, especially for super-long span high-speed railway girder bridges.

        Effects of vitamin A supplementation in the diet of breeding geese on offspring intestinal tissue morphology and immune performance

        Objective: The effects of maternal and offspring dietary vitamin A (VA) supplementation on early body weight, digestive tract function and immune function in goslings were studied. Methods: Yangzhou geese (180 d old) were randomly divided into 5 experimental groups of 15 females and 3 males (the males were kept until slaughter). Eggs were collected for hatching during the peak laying period. A total of 96 goslings were selected from each treatment group (each fed a basic diet supplemented with 0, 4,000, 8,000, 12,000 or 16,000 IU/kg VA) and randomly divided into 2 groups, with 6 replicates in each group and 8 goslings in each replicate. The gosling diet was supplemented with 0 or 9,000 IU/kg VA. Results: i) Villus length, villus width and the muscle thickness of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were increased and the crypt depth was reduced after adding 12,000 IU/kg VA to the goslings’ diet (p<0.05). Adding 9,000 IU/kg VA to the offspring diet increased the length of the duodenal villi and width of the ileum and decreased the crypt depth of the ileum (p<0.05). ii) Supplementing the maternal diet with 12,000 IU/kg VA increased immune organ weight, the immune organ index and immunoglobulin content in goslings (p<0.05). The bursa weight and immunoglobulin G content of offspring were higher in the 9,000 IU/kg VA supplementation group than in the group with no supplementation (p<0.05). Conclusion: Offspring growth and development were affected by the amount of VA added into maternal diet. The negative effect of maternal VA deficiency on offspring can be compensated by adding VA to the offspring diet. Continued VA supplementation in the offspring diet after excessive VA supplementation in the maternal diet is unfavorable for gosling growth and development.

        Identification of Volatile Components in Phyllanthus emblica L. and Their Antimicrobial Activity

        The volatile components and in vitro antimicrobial activities of Emblica (Phyllanthus emblica L.) essential oils (EOs) obtained by hydrodistillation (HD-EO) and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE-EO) were investigated. The compositions of volatile compounds in these oils were tentatively determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activites of these two extracts were investigated with microbiological tests against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and three pathogenic fungi. The main components of both oils were β-caryophyllene, β-bourbonene, 1-octen-3-ol, thymol, and methyleugenol. Both essential oils showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against all the tested microorganisms. Gram-positive bacteria were more sensitive to the investigated oils than Gram-negative bacteria. SFE-EO exhibited a higher antifungal activity compared to HD-EO.

        Morphological characteristics and gene mapping of a dense panicle (dp2) mutant in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

        A dense panicle mutant (dp2) derived from theOryza sativa ssp. japonica cultivar Nipponbare through ethylmethane sulfonate mutagenesis was used in present study. Compared to the wild type, the panicle of dp2 mutantexhibited more branches and denser grains. Further more, thenumber of spikelets per panicle, number of primary branchesand secondary branches of dp2 mutant were significantlyincreased while the panicle length, and 1,000-grain weightwere significantly decreased. The results from the geneticanalysis indicated that the dense panicle phenotype wascontrolled by a single dominance nuclear gene. Polymorphicanalysis of SSR and InDel markers demonstrated that theDP2 gene was located at the long arm of chromosome 2,which was further mapped between SSR markers RM341and RM13356 in a physical region of 398 kb. Within thisregion, the RCN2 (LOC_Os02g32950) gene which wasannotated relating to the development of rice panicle wasfound. Compared to the wild type, the sequence of RCN2gene in the dp2 mutant showed that two SNPs replacementhad taken place in the promoter region (G–A) and the intronregion (A–T), respectively. The dp2 mutant could be a novelmutant of RCN2 gene and this novel mutant might be usefulfor further studies on this gene.

        Multi-objective particle swarm optimization with dynamic population size

        There are many complex multi-objective optimization problems in the real world, which are difficult to solve using traditional optimization methods. Multi-objective particle swarm optimization is one of the effective algorithms to solve such problems. This paper proposes a multi-objective particle swarm optimization with dynamic population size (D-MOPSO), which helps to compensate for the lack of convergence and diversity brought by particle swarm optimization, and makes full use of the existing resources in the search process. In D-MOPSO, population size increases or decreases depending on the resources in the archive, thereby regulating population size. On the one hand, particles are added according to local perturbations to improve particle exploration. On the other hand, the non-dominated sorting and population density are used to control the population size to prevent the excessive growth of population size. Finally, the algorithm is compared with 13 competing multi-objective optimization algorithms on four series of benchmark problems. The results show that the proposed algorithm has advantages in solving different benchmark problems.
