Three studies under the project were performed this year and presented in this report : a review of taxonomic literatures and the construction of distribution maps by Woo-Tchul Lee, pollen morphology by Sang-Tae Lee and Moo-Yeol Kim, and wood anatomy by Woong-Young Soh and Kwan-Bae Jeon.

      • BEZ235 (PIK3/mTOR inhibitor) Overcomes Pazopanib Resistance in Patient-Derived Refractory Soft Tissue Sarcoma Cells

        <P><I>BACKGROUND:</I> Although pazopanib treatment has become the standard chemotherapy in salvage setting for metastatic sarcoma patients, most patients progress after pazopanib treatment in 4 to 6 months. After failure to pazopanib, patients have limited options for treatment. Therefore, subsequent therapy in patients who failed to pazopanib is urgently needed and the use of patient derived cells or patient derived tumors for accompanying testing with various pharmacological inhibitors could offer additional treatment options for these patients. <I>METHODS:</I> Patient derived tumor cells were collected from ascites at the time of progression to pazopanib and a 13-drug panel was tested for drug sensitivity. We confirmed the results using <I>in vitro</I> cell viability assay and immunoblot assay. We also performed the genomic profiling of PDX model. <I>RESULTS:</I> The growth of patient derived tumor cells was significantly reduced by exposure to 1.0 μM AZD2014 compared with control (control versus AZD2014, mean growth = 100.0% vs 16.04%, difference = 83.96%, 95% CI = 70.01% to 97.92%, <I>P</I> = .0435). Similarly, 1.0 μM BEZ235 profoundly inhibited tumor cell growth <I>in vitro</I> when compared to control (control versus BEZ235, mean growth = 100.0% vs 7.308%, difference = 92.69%, 95% CI = 78.87% to 106.5%, <I>P</I> < .0001). Despite the presence of CDK4 amplification in the patient-derived tumor cells, LEE011 did not considerably inhibit cell proliferation when compared with control (control vs LEE011, mean growth = 100.0% vs 80.23%, difference = 19.77%, 95% CI = 1.828% to 37.72%, <I>P</I> = .0377). The immunoblot analysis showed that BEZ235 treatment decreased pAKT, pmTOR and pERK whereas AZD2014 decreased only pmTOR. <I>CONCLUSION:</I> Taken together, upregulation of mTOR/AKT pathway in sarcoma patient derived cells was considerably inhibited by the treatment of AZD2014 and BEZ235 with downregulation of AKT pathway (greater extent for BEZ235). These molecules may be considered as treatment option in STS patient who have failed to pazopanib in the context of clinical trials.</P>

      • The Safety and Efficacy of Daclatasvir and Asunaprevir with Chronic HCV Genotype 1 Infection and Hemodialysis

        Aims: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Daclatasvir (DAV) and Asunaprevir (ASV) in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) and chronic renal failure (CRF). Methods: 22 chronic hemodialysis patients with HCV infection at 12 medical centers have prospectively enrolled from Feb, 2016 to Feb, 2017 (NCT02580474). Of those, 9 patients who were followed 12 weeks after treatment ended were included. We evaluated the virological responses at each week 4, 12, 24 and the 12-week sustained virologic response (SVR12). The tolerability and safety of patients were also evaluated. Results: Of these 20 patients, there had no resistance-associated variant of NS5A (NS5A RAVs) and 2 patients showed indeterminate NS5A RAVs. 12 patients (54.5%) completed the 24 weeks treatment of DAV and ASV. 6 patients (27.2%) have continued, but 4 patients discontinued study prior to 12 weeks. Overall, all patients (n=9) achieved SVR12. Virologic response at week 4, 12 and 24 showed 94.4% (17/18), 93.3% (14/15), and 100% (12/12) respectively. DCV and ASV were well tolerated among the majority of patients and discontinuation of the treatment due to adverse events (hypertension, bradycardia, leukemia) was occurred in 3 patients. In two patients with indeterminate NS5A RAVs, one achieved SVR12 but the other showed viral breakthrough and discontinued treatment. Conclusions: In this study, DAV and ASV combination therapy for chronic hemodialysis patients with HCV infection achieved high sustained virological response with few adverse events. Close monitoring of safety and tolerability may be necessary when treating chronic hepatitis C patients with CRF receiving DCV and ASV.

        EU의 Biomass를 이용한 에너지 생산

        EU 국가들의 1993년부터 1999년까지의 6년간 재생에너지 사용량 변화를 살펴보기 위하여 절대량 증가와 증가율을 조사하였다. 많은 나라들이 높은 사용량 증가 또는 증가율을 나타내었다. 초기에 재생에너지 사용이 적었던 나라들은 1999년에도 실질적인 생산량은 적지만 기간 중 높은 증가율을 보였다. 반면에 1993년에 이미 사용량이 높았던 나라들은 낮은 증가율을 보였으나 전체사용량은 높은 수준이었다. 재생 에너지 사용의 성공 여부는 보급 확대를 위해 많은 장해물들을 극복한 후에 성취될 수 있다. 보급 확대를 위한 요인들로는 정치적, 제도적, 재정적, 행정적인 지원과 기술개발, 홍보, 교육 및 훈련 등이 있다. Biomass를 이용한 에너지 생산 및 보급에 성공한 덴마크, 핀란드, 독일, 스페인 및 스웨덴의 송공 요인들을 소개하였다. In order to identify those Member State/technology combinations where there has been most success in achieving renewable energy penetration over the six-year period 1993-1999, the two selection criteria such as absolute increase and percentage of increase have been applied. Many Member States show either a large absolute increase in renewable energy output, or a large percentage of increase. Member States with only very low initial levels of renewable energy use may demonstrate rapid growth rates even though the actual quantity of output is still only small. Conversely, Member State with levels of renewable energy use that were already relatively high in 1993 show a less rapid percentage growth rate, but these Member States may still Have added significant quantities to the overall output. Successful penetration of renewable energy can only be achieved after overcoming many varied obstacles to an increase in their exploitation. Factors, which can influence the successful implementation of renewable energy projects, include political, legislative, financial administration, technological development, information, education and training. Examples of successful penetration of biomass power were shown for Denmark, Finland, Germany, Spain and Sweden.

        This study was concerned with effects of gas velocity(0.23∼0.69 cm/sec), liquid velocity(0.42-0.71 cm/sec) and particle size(0.24-0.48cm/sec) on individual phase holdups, local solid holdups and axial dispersion coefficients. Ca-alginate yeast gel beads(s.g.=1.08) were used as the solid phase. In this experimental range, bed porosity decreased with increase in gas velocity but it increased with liquid velocity. And the correlations of axial dispersion coefficients with gas velocity, liquid velocity and particle size were as follows. ?? Especially, axial dispersion coefficients in this column were more increased of liquid velocity than gas velocity.

        찰옥수수연구 XVIII 시설하우스에서 2기작 찰옥수수 교잡종의 주요 생육특성 비교

        The major characteristics of the developed corn hybrids were compared at each different planting time; 1st time(April 28) and 2nd time(August 20), respectively. Among traits surveyed, stem height showed highly at 1st time than 2nd, while ear height, stem diameter and ear length were similar at two times. Sugar content of the used hybrids showed highly at 2nd planting time than 1st. Pericarp thickness was also high at 2nd planting time. Especially, among hybrids CNU99 was the highest in stem height and ear length, CNU11 and CNU56 were high in sugar content, and CNU51 and CNU124 were thiner than other hybrids in pericarp thickness. Accordingly, these hybrids will be planted and recognized in 2nd yield trial for superior corn hybrid selection.

        Serveral physiological characterstics of sulfur­oxidizing bacteria such as Thiobacillus thiooxidans and T. concretivorus are described. 1) Effect of pH on inhibitory function of pyruvate. The rate of oxygen uptake was reduced in accordance with decrease of pH. And on the other hand inhibition rate of pyruvate was more severe in lower pH than in higher pH. High concentration of hydrogen ion seemed to accelerate inhibitory function of pyruvate. Limiting concentration of pyruvate which absolutely inhibit oxygen uptake was lowered with time. In O time, 10^-2M of pyruvate absolutely inhibited oxygen uptake in pH 5. After 24 hours limiting concentration was lowered to 10^-3M. 2) Effect of organic compounds on the oxygen uptake of T. concretivorns. Effect of glucose, fructose, xylose, glutamate, succinate, malate, glycine, lactate, acetate, pyruvate, citrate, formate, and cis­aconitate on thiosulfate oxidation and availability of these compounds as sloe source of energy by T. concretivorus were observed. A 0.5% concentration of malate and glycine accelerated thiosulfate oxidation almost react somewhat inhibitory. Pyruvate and citrate inhibited thiosulfate oxidation. In thiosulfate­free medium, organic compounds except formate and pyruvate affected no significant influences on oxygen uptake. 3) Enzyme assay. Of enzymes concerned TCA cycle and glycolysis, T. concretivorus had most of those enzyme activities even though they were low. Activities of hexokinase and succinic dehydrogenase were somewhat high and that of aconitase was very low on the contrary. 4) Optimum condition of mass culture of sulfur oxidizing bacteria. In a large jar fermenter opimum conditions including agitations speed, volume of supplying gases, and constitution rate of oxygen and carbon dioxide, etc. were experimented. The sulfur­oxidier, T. thiooxidans was grown most effectively under the condition of autom­atically controlled pH of 1.0, and with the aeration of oxygen and carbon dioxide mixture (5 : 1) at the flow rate of 0.05 vvm, and at the agitation velocity of 200 rpm in this laboratory scale fermenter.

The formula for calculating the penetration depth, tieforce of anchor and maximum bending moment of sheet-pile wall by fixed earth supported Method in case of waterfront structure, have been arranged. It have been cleared the design parameters, anchor pull ratio and penetration ratio and maximum bending moment ratio, are respectively function of independent variables which are geometrical condition and soil properties.

        Early repolarization is a common electrocardiographic (ECG) feature found in young adults, men and athletes, and has been considered to be a benign feature for the last several decades. But recent studies suggest that early repolarization may be related to idiopathic ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death. We report a young man, 35 years old, who had life threatening ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac arrest. He was evaluated for cardiac causes of ventricular fibrillation. There was no explanation other than that his ECG showed an early repolarization pattern so we treated him with implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Thus, we suggest that early repolarization may be related with life threatening ventricular arrhythmia.
