The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortex (HPA) axis is the central mediator of the stress response. The supramammillary (SuM) region is relatively unique among the hypothalamic structures in that it sends a large, direct projection to the hippocampal formation. It has been shown that mild stress could activate the SuM cells that project to the hippocampus. However, the role of these cell populations in modulating the stress response is not known. The present study examined the effect of stress on different populations of SuM cells that project to the hippocampus by injecting the fluorescent retrograde tracer, fluorogold (FG), into the hippocampus and utilizing the immunohistochemistry of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF), serotonin (5-HT), glutamate decarboxylase (GAD), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and NADPH-d reactivity. Immobilization (IMO) stress (2 hr) produced an increase in the expression of ChAT- immunoreactivity, and tended to increase in CRF, 5-HT, GAD, TH-immunoreactivity and nitric oxide (NO)-reactivity in the SuM cells. Fifty-three percent of 5-HT, 31% of ChAT and 56% of CRF cells were double stained with retrograde cells from the hippocampus. By contrast, a few retrogradely labeled cells projecting to the hippocampus were immunoreactive for dopamine, ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and NO. These results suggest that the SuM region contains distinct cell populations that differentially respond to stress. In addition, the findings suggest that serotonergic, cholinergic and corticotropin releasing cells projecting to the hippocampus within the SuM nucleus may play an important role in modulating stress-related behaviors.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon levels and risk assessment for food from service facilities in Korea

<P>In this study, levels of benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), dibenzo[a,h]anthracene, benzo[g,h,i]perylene and indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene in 412 food items collected from food service facilities in Korea were analysed. The concentrations of the eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) ranged 0.13-0.48g/kg. The concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene in all food samples were <1 g/kg, which is the lowest maximum limit in foods regulated by European Union legislation. PAH contents were employed to conduct exposure and risk assessment. The chronic daily intake of PAHs from 412 food samples was 5.48 x 10(-6)-4.70 xx 10(-4)mu g-TEQ(BaP)/kg/day with margins of exposure of 1.04 x 10(9)-1.16 x 10(11).</P>

Ultrasonic cleaning is performed by cavitation which is caused by the change of the sound pressure due to the vibration in a cleaning tank. In this study, experiments on electric power and sound pressure with various temperatures, dissolved oxygen and the level of the fluid was done in order to find out how the changes in a cleaning tank affect cavitation. As a result of a series of experiments, we found that transducer impedance changes periodically in response to the variances of fluid and have a direct influence on cleaning efficiency.

Purpose: To report cases of corneal perforation among corneas treated with cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive. Methods: We performed cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive application on 1 case of corneal perforation due to fungal keratitis, one case of corneal perforation due to neurotrophic keratitis, one case of corneal fistula due to foreign body and one case of corneal perforation due to corneal stromal dystrophy. After cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive removal, amniotic membrane transplantation was conducted in two cases, and keratoplaty was performed in another two cases. Results: Postoperative follow-up period was 12 months on average. In all four cases, ocular integrity was successfully restored. There was no sign of recurrence, infection or inflammation. Conclusions: Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive monotherpy can restore ocular integrity successfully in various type of corneal perforation and After cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive removal, amniotic membrane transplantation and keratoplaty can be performed additionally.

목적: 낚시 중 발생한 낚시추에 의한 안와 내 이물 1예를 경험하였기에 국내 최초로 보고하고자 한다. 대상과 방법: 40세 남자 환자가 낚시 중 발생한 좌안의 통증과 시력저하를 주소로 전원되었다. 나안시력은 좌안 안전수동으로 교정되지 않았다. 검사상 좌측 하안검의 열상과 함께 녹색의 끊어진 낚시줄이 열상을 통해 밖으로 돌출되어 관찰되었다. 안와전산화단층촬영에서 큰 금속성의 이물이 좌측안와 하측에 존재하며, 안구가 상측으로 이동되는 소견이 관찰되었다. 결과: 이물 제거술을 시행하여 1.6×2.0 cm, 25 g의 낚시 추를 제거하였다. 술 후 1일째에 안구 운동은 정상으로 회복되었으며 시력은 20/200이었다. 수상 8개월 후 최종시력은 20/40이었다. 결론: 저자들은 낚시 중 발생한 안와 내 이물을 성공적으로 치료하였기에, 이를 문헌 고찰과 함께 국내 최초로 보고하는 바이다. Purpose: To report a case of intraorbital foreign body by a fishing-line sinker. Methods: A 40-year-old man, complained of severe pain and decreased vision in the left eye after fishing injury in which a fishing-line sinker struck his left eye, was referred to the hospital for further evaluation and management. Visual acuity was counter finger OS. Examination revealed left lower eyelid laceration and a long, green-colored string protruding from laceration wound. Computed tomographic (CT) scan of head and orbits revealed a large metallic foreign body in the left inferior orbit, displacing the globe superiorly. Results: He underwent surgery and a 1.6×2.0 cm, 25 g of fishing-line sinker was removed. Eye examination on the first postoperative day showed a visual acuity of 20/200 OS, with a complete recovery of eyeball movement. Eight months after the original trauma, the patient manifested a visual acuity of 20/40 OS. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of intraorbital foreign body by a fishing-line sinker.

Objectives This study determines the effects of comorbidity of mood disorder and alcohol use disorder on suicide behavior. Methods We converted data from the electronic medical records of one university hospital into a common data model and utilized it in our analysis. We selected 9551 patients with diagnosis codes of mood disorders or alcohol use disorders and divided them into three groups: mood disorder (MD) only, alcohol use disorder (AUD) only, and comorbidity of mood disorder and alcohol use disorder (MD+AUD). The mood disorder group was also subgrouped with depressive (DD) or bipolar affective disorder (BD) groups, and the comorbidity group was classified in the same way. Then, we applied logistic regression analysis to assess the risk of suicide attempts between the diagnostic groups. Subgroup analysis according to age also was conducted. Results The MD+AUD group had 2.7 (odd ratio [OR]=2.70, 95% confidence intervals [CI]=1.91- 3.81, p<0.0001) and the DD+AUD group had 2.78 (OR=2.78, 95% CI=1.95-3.98, p<0.0001) times higher risk of suicide attempts than the MD only and DD only group, respectively. Furthermore, according to the age subgroup, the risk of suicide attempts was the highest (OR=5.17, 95% CI=2.35-11.40, p<0.0001) in the DD+AUD group for those aged 40-59. There were no significant results in BD. Conclusion The results showed that the comorbidity of mood disorder and alcohol use disorder could increase suicide risk. This study suggested that alcohol use behavior needs to be assessed as well as mood symptoms for suicide prevention.

An abnormally enlarged right ovary and a mass in fat surrounding the right kidney were discovered in a dairy cow during routine postmortem examination at slaughter. The ovary was dark reddish and multinodular in shape. Numerous cystic structures were identified in the mass. Histopathologically, the ovary was completely replaced with large, uniform, polyhedral neoplastic cells containing vesicular nuclei and prominent nucleoli. The mitotic index was high. In the lymphatic vessels, tumor emboli were observed. Another mass in the fat surranding the right kidney had the same histological features as the ovarian mass. This animal was diagnosed with malignant dysgerminoma and metastasis to other peritoneal organs.
Principles and applications of nanomaterial-based hyperthermia in cancer therapy

Over the past few decades, hyperthermia therapy(HTT) has become one of the most promising strategies totreat cancer. HTT has been applied with nanotechnologyto overcome drawbacks such as non-selectivity and invasivenessand to maximize therapeutic effi cacy. The hightemperature of HTT induces protein denaturation that leadsto apoptosis or necrosis. It can also enhance the eff ects ofother cancer therapies because heat-damaged tissues reduceradioresistance and help accumulate anticancer drugs. Goldnanoparticles and superparamagnetic iron oxide with differentenergy sources are commonly used as hyperthermiaagents. New types of nanoparticles such as those whose surfaceis coated with several polymers and those modifi ed withtargeting moieties have been studied as novel HTT agents. In this review, we introduce principles and applications ofnanotechnology-based HTT using gold nanoparticles andsuperparamagnetic iron oxide.
