        Efficient Proxy Re-encryption Scheme for E-Voting System

        With the development of information and communication technologies, especially wireless networks and cell phones, the e-voting system becomes popular as its cost-effectiveness, swiftness, scalability, and ecological sustainability. However, the current e-voting schemes are faced with the problem of privacy leakage and further cause worse vote-buying and voter-coercion problems. Moreover, in large-scale voting, some previous e-voting system encryption scheme with pairing operation also brings huge overhead pressure to the voting system. Thus, it is a vital problem to design a protocol that can protect voter privacy and simultaneously has high efficiency to guarantee the effective implementation of e-voting. To address these problems, our paper proposes an efficient unidirectional proxy re-encryption scheme that provides the re-encryption of vote content and the verification of users’ identity. This function can be exactly applied in the e-voting system to protect the content of vote and preserve the privacy of the voter. Our proposal is proven to be CCA secure and collusion resistant. The detailed analysis also shows that our scheme achieves higher efficiency in computation cost and ciphertext size than the schemes in related fields.

        The Use of Toluidine Blue Staining Combined with Paraffin Sectioning and the Optimization of Freeze-thaw Counting Methods for Analysing Root-Knot Nematodes in Tomato

        Root-knot nematodes (RKNs) (Meloidogyne spp.) are one of the most damaging crop pests and cause severeyield losses worldwide. Easier and more efficient methods are needed for assessing nematode infestations and hostplant resistance. In the present study, we combined toluidine blue staining and paraffin sectioning to observe theestablishment of giant cells (GCs; redifferentiated cells induced by nematode feeding) and the developmental status ofRKNs in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The number of RKNs was counted using a modified freeze-thaw countingmethod. Finally, three tomato lines with different levels of RKN resistance, but otherwise identical genetic backgrounds,were tested to verify the applicability of the combined method. The results suggested that using toluidine blue stainingcombined with paraffin sectioning and freeze-thaw counting accurately reflects the level of RKN resistance of tomato plants.

        Wind characteristics of a strong typhoon in marine surface boundary layer

        High-resolution wind data were acquired from a 100-m high offshore tower during the passage of Typhoon Hagupit in September, 2008. The meteorological tower was equipped with an ultrasonic anemometer and a number of cup anemometers at heights between 10 and 100 m. Wind characteristics of the strong typhoon, such as mean wind speed and wind direction, turbulence intensity, turbulence integral length scale, gust factor and power spectra of wind velocity, vertical profiles of mean wind speed were investigated in detail based on the wind data recorded during the strong typhoon. The measured results revealed that the wind characteristics in different stages during the typhoon varied remarkably. Through comparison with non-typhoon wind measurements, the phenomena of enhanced levels of turbulence intensity, gust factors, turbulence integral length scale and spectral magnitudes in typhoon boundary layer were observed. The monitored data and analysis results are expected to be useful for the wind-resistant design of offshore structures and buildings on seashores in typhoon-prone regions.

        Protective enzymes and genes related to the JA pathway are involved in the response to root-knot nematodes at high soil temperatures in tomatoes carrying Mi-1

        Root-knot nematodes (RKNs; Meloidogyne spp.) are obligate endoparasites that infect a large number of crop plants and cause severe yield losses. Tomato cultivars carrying the Mi-1 gene conferring root-knot nematode resistance have been widely used, but this gene loses its effectiveness at soil temperatures above 28°C. In this study, the mechanism of the loss of resistance to RKNs at high soil temperatures was examined using LA0655 (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Anahu), which contains the Mi-1 gene. It was found that high soil temperatures delayed the expression of the Mi-1 gene and reduced the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, chitinase, and β-1,3-glucanase. Although genes in the jasmonic acid (JA) pathway exhibited an obvious response at high soil temperatures, this response could not prevent the invasion of RKNs; indeed, at 30 days after inoculation with RKNs, the plants produced large numbers of root knots and egg masses at a soil temperature of 32°C.

        Preparation and Characterization of Disorderly PCL Crystal Lamellae Electrostatic Direct Writing Scaffolds with Polydopamine Coating

        Polycaprolactone (PCL) exhibits limited applicability in the application of biological tissue engineering scaffolds due to its lower surface hydrophilicity and surface energy. In this paper, PCL crystal lamellae scaffolds with different surface roughness were fabricated by immersing electrostatic direct-written PCL scaffolds in PCL/Amyl acetate (AC) solution for 15 , 30 , 60 and 120 min, respectively, using solution incubation for crystallization. The rough scaffolds were subsequently coated with polydopamine (PDA) for 4 h, 8 h, 12 h and 16 h. Surface morphology, chemical properties and water contact angle tests were performed on both types of scaffolds. To evaluate the feasibility of the modified scaffold as a bionic scaffold, L929 mouse fibroblasts were inoculated on the surface of the scaffold and cultured for 1, 3 and 7 days. When compared to the untreated scaffolds, the surface of the scaffolds treated for 15 , 30 , 60 , and 120 min, respectively exhibited a distinct PCL crystal lamellae structure, accompanied by a significant increase in surface roughness and corresponding water contact angle elevation. In the cell experiments, the 30 min treatment group demonstrated superior cellular activity compared to the other experimental groups. The water contact angle of the PDA-modified scaffolds decreased over time with extended treatment durations, ultimately reaching 0°. In the cell experiments, the 8 h treatment scaffolds exhibited a more pronounced improvement in activity compared to the other groups. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the PDA-modified PCL crystal lamellae electrostatic direct-write scaffold promotes cell proliferation and differentiation, thereby facilitating tissue regeneration.

        Novel Nucleotide Variations, Haplotypes Structure and Associations with Growth Related Traits of Goat AT Motif-Binding Factor (ATBF1) Gene

        The AT motif-binding factor (ATBF1) not only interacts with protein inhibitor of activated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) (PIAS3) to suppress STAT3 signaling regulating embryo early development and cell differentiation, but is required for early activation of the pituitary specific transcription factor 1 (Pit1) gene (also known as POU1F1) critically affecting mammalian growth and development. The goal of this study was to detect novel nucleotide variations and haplotypes structure of the ATBF1 gene, as well as to test their associations with growth-related traits in goats. Herein, a total of seven novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (SNP 1-7) within this gene were found in two well-known Chinese native goat breeds. Haplotypes structure analysis demonstrated that there were four haplotypes in Hainan black goat while seventeen haplotypes in Xinong Saanen dairy goat, and both breeds only shared one haplotype (hap1). Association testing revealed that the SNP2, SNP5, SNP6, and SNP7 loci were also found to significantly associate with growth-related traits in goats, respectively. Moreover, one diplotype in Xinong Saanen dairy goats significantly linked to growth related traits. These preliminary findings not only would extend the spectrum of genetic variations of the goat ATBF1 gene, but also would contribute to implementing marker-assisted selection in genetics and breeding in goats.

        Effects of quercetin and coated sodium butyrate dietary supplementation in diquat-challenged pullets

        Objective: This study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that dietary quercetin (QUE) and coated sodium butyrate (SB) supplementation alleviate oxidative stress in the small intestine of diquat (DIQ)-challenged pullets. Methods: A total of 200 13-week-old pullets were divided into four groups: the control group (CON), the DIQ group, the QUE group, and the coated SB group, and injected intraperitoneally with either saline (CON) or diquat (DIQ, QUE, and SB) to induce oxidative stress on day 0. Results: On the first day, the malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations in the SB group were significantly different from those in the DIQ and QUE groups (p<0.05), and dietary supplementation with SB increased serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) levels compared with the DIQ group (p<0.05). Quercetin and SB increased the levels of CLAUDIN-1 and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) in the jejunum. On the tenth day of treatment, QUE attenuated the decrease in GSH-PX levels compared to those of the CON group (p<0.05), while SB increased SOD, GSH-PX, and total antioxidant capacity levels compared to those of the DIQ group. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) mRNA levels in the QUE and SB groups increased (p<0.05) and CLAUDIN-1 mRNA levels in the QUE and SB groups were upregulated compared to those in the DIQ group ileum tissue. Conclusion: Supplementation of QUE and SB demonstrated the ability to relieve oxidative stress in pullets post DIQ-injection with a time-dependent manner and QUE and SB may be potential antioxidant additives for relieving oxidative stress and protecting the intestinal barrier of pullets.
