Removal of nitrate from constructed wetland in winter in high-latitude areas with modified hydrophyte biochars

        Bo Wang,Si-yao Liu,Fayun Li,Zhiping Fan 한국화학공학회 2017 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.34 No.3

In high-latitude areas, nitrate treatment from constructed wetlands is often not so good in winter. The study aims to develop an efficient and economic technology to remove nitrate from constructed wetland under the conditions of winter temperature. We conducted laboratory experiments to investigate the removal of nitrate from aqueous solution and wastewater by modified hydrophyte biochars from constructed wetlands. The second-order model fit the nitrate desorption kinetics of modified hydrophyte biochars with a high coefficient of determination (R2>0.99). Freundlich isotherms performed well to fit the nitrate sorption data (R2>0.98) of modified hydrophyte biochars. Batch adsorption experiments also showed that both initial solution pH and coexisting anions could affect the adsorption of nitrate onto modified hydrophyte biochars. Our results suggested that modified hydrophyte biochars might be a promising alternative wastewater treatment technology for nitrate removal from constructed wetland in winter in high-latitude areas.

Polymorphisms in TYMS for Prediction of Capecitabine-Induced Hand-Foot Syndrome in Chinese Patients with Colorectal Cancer

        Si-Qi Dong,Tong-Min Wang,Jiang-Bo Zhang,Yong-Qiao He,Wen-Qiong Xue,Zi-Yi Wu,Da-Wei Yang,Lian-Jing Cao,Jing-Wen Huang,Xi-Zhao Li,Pei-Fen Zhang,Xiao-Hui Zheng,Wei-Hua Jia 대한암학회 2021 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.53 No.3

Purpose Capecitabine is an extensively used oral prodrug of 5-fluorouracil in treatment of colon cancer and is known to cause hand-foot syndrome (HFS). As the target enzyme for capecitabine, thymidylate synthase (TYMS) plays a key role for 5-fluorouracil metabolism and has been associated with some side effects caused by capecitabine. The aim of our study is to identify the possible genetic predictors of capecitabine-induced HFS (CAP-HFS) in Chinese colorectal cancer patients.Materials and Methods Whole exons of TYMS were sequenced for 288 extreme phenotype HFS patients, including 144 severe or early-onset (first 2 cycles) moderate HFS extreme cases and 144 extreme controls with no reported HFS. The associations between polymorphisms and CAP-HFS were analyzed using logistic regression under an additive model. Results We identified a novel risk mutation (c.1A>G, chr18:657743), was associated with severe HFS in an extreme case who was affected during the first cycle of treatment. Moreover, we identified three new variants, rs3786362, rs699517, rs2790, and two previously reported variants, 5’VNTR 2R/3R and 3′-untranslated region 6-bp ins-del, which were significantly associated with CAP-HFS (p < 0.05). In silico analysis revealed that the effect of these polymorphisms in the TYMS region on the development of HFS might not be restricted solely to the regulation of TYMS expression, but also the TYMS catalytic activity through the indirect effect on ENOSF1 expression. Conclusion This study identified new polymorphisms in TYMS gene significantly associated with CAP-HFS, which may serve as useful genetic predictors for CAP-HFS and help to elucidate the underlying mechanism of HFS.

Micro Convexity Elimination of Tungsten Carbide in Electrical Discharge Milling for Lens Moulds

        Tianfeng Zhou,Si-Bo Wang,Xin Liu,Zhi-Qiang Liang,Xibin Wang 한국정밀공학회 2017 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.18 No.12

Electrical discharge milling (ED milling) using spherical electrode is considered to fabricate tungsten carbide (WC) lens moulds for high volume and cost efficient mass production comparing with hemispherical electrode whose wear is noticeably larger. However, micro convexity with dome shape generating in the center of the mould leads to poor surface quality of moulds when using spherical electrode. Therefore, based on boundary layer theory, the forming mechanism of the micro convexity is analyzed in detail by measuring its height and profile by virtue of 3D laser scanning microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The relationship between the boundary layer thickness and the discharge gap is subsequently established, which can be utilized to reduce the convexity to improve the surface quality of lens mould. Then a method to eliminate the micro convexity is proposed. In addition, experiments of different discharge gaps were carried out to confirm the boundary layer theory. Results show that the height of micro convexity can be reduced to 4 μm when the discharge gap was specified to the boundary layer thickness at certain rotational speed.

Functional significance of cholesterol metabolism in cancer: from threat to treatment

        Xiao Mingming,Xu Jin,Wang Wei,Zhang Bo,Liu Jiang,Li Jialin,Xu Hang,Zhao Yingjun,Yu Xianjun,Shi Si 생화학분자생물학회 2023 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.55 No.-

Cholesterol is an essential structural component of membranes that contributes to membrane integrity and fluidity. Cholesterol homeostasis plays a critical role in the maintenance of cellular activities. Recently, increasing evidence has indicated that cholesterol is a major determinant by modulating cell signaling events governing the hallmarks of cancer. Numerous studies have shown the functional significance of cholesterol metabolism in tumorigenesis, cancer progression and metastasis through its regulatory effects on the immune response, ferroptosis, autophagy, cell stemness, and the DNA damage response. Here, we summarize recent literature describing cholesterol metabolism in cancer cells, including the cholesterol metabolism pathways and the mutual regulatory mechanisms involved in cancer progression and cholesterol metabolism. We also discuss various drugs targeting cholesterol metabolism to suggest new strategies for cancer treatment.

Molecular cloning of the duck MEF2C gene cDNA coding domain sequence and its expression during fetal muscle tissue development

        Ling-Li Sun,He-he Liu,Hao-han Wang,Jian-Ming Si,Hai-bo Jin,Xin-xin Li,Chao Yang,Liang Li,Jiwen Wang 한국유전학회 2013 Genes & Genomics Vol.35 No.3

Myogenic enhancer transcription factor 2c (MEF2c), one of the members of the MEF2 family of transcription factors, plays an important role in mammalian muscle development. However, the role of MEF2c in avian muscle development still remains unclear. To understand the function of MEF2c in avian muscle development, we first cloned the duck MEF2c coding domain sequence (CDS) and analyzed MEF2c expression in duck muscle tissues of embryos from 10 days of incubation to 1 week after birth using real-time PCR technology. The results showed that the duck MEF2c CDS consists of 1,398nucleotides that encode 465 amino acids. The MEF2c duck protein contains a MADS domain, a MEF2 domain and a HJURP_C domain with high homology to related proteins in other organisms. Different expression levels of MEF2c were found in skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle. Therefore, these results indicated that duck MEF2c has two conserved domains (a MADS and a MEF2 domain), is an indispensable regulator of muscle development, and plays an important role in the development of duck muscle.
