Lethal and trans-generational effects of Metarhizium anisopliae on red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, using age-stage, two-sex life table

        Ahmed Rizwan,Freed Shoaib,Naeem Afifa,Akmal Muhammad 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.2

Outbreaks of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier, in Pakistan are considered a very serious threat to the date industry, owing to the sudden death of date palm trees. Current integrated management strategy largely depends on insecticides, with negative impacts on the environment. Integration of bio-control strategies incorporating entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) may provide an ecologically safe alternative. In the current study the effectiveness of Metarhizium anisopliae Sorokin against R. ferrugineus was investigated using the immersion method and the effects of this fungus on biological parameters of R. ferrugineus were estimated by age-stage, twosex life table software. After treatment with M. anisopliae isolate (Ma-M 2 ), lethal concentration (LC 50 ) 1.2 × 10 6 spores/mL was determined against R. ferrugineus 3rd instar grubs. M. anisopliae infected grubs showed reduced net reproductive rate R o (75.55) and mean generation time T (113.886 days) and intrinsic rate of increase r (0.03797) compared to the untreated group. Also, adult longevity of males and females were significantly reduced in the M. anisopliae-infected group (F 1 ) as compared to the untreated group. Trans-generational studies revealed that grubs stage duration (69.34 days) and fecundity (181.32 eggs) of the M. anisopliae-infected group (F 1 ) were decreased compared to the untreated group. The use of lasting and adverse effects on the biological parameters of R. ferrugineus, indicate that treatment with EPF may provide an eco-friendly management strategy for this pest.

The changing political trends in erstwhile FATA: a study of the last three elections

Ahmed Raja Qaiser,Ishaq Mohammad,Shoaib Muhammad 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2021 International Area Studies Review Vol.24 No.4

This study investigates the changing political trends in erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Analysis of the last three elections (2008, 2013, 2018) shows a substantial change in the region. The tribal structure, local traditions, power arrangement and electoral practices have changed significantly over a decade. The extension of the Political Parties Order to the region and its merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stimulated political activities in the area that increased the political awareness of tribal people. The results of the 2013 and 2018 elections highlight the changes. Electoral activities, women participation and voter turnout increased with every election. Tribal youth joined existing political forums to demand their democratic rights. A significant percentage of the young, educated Pashtuns joined the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement in its demand for improved governance.

Amidoxime modification of polyacrylonitrile/Pterocladia capillacea-derived activated carbon composite for adsorption of toxic chromium from aquatic environment

        Amany GM Shoaib,El Nemr Ahmed,El Sikaily Amany,Masoud Mamdouh S.,Ramadan Mohamed S. 한국탄소학회 2022 Carbon Letters Vol.32 No.2

By polymerizing acrylonitrile in the presence of ammonium persulfate as an initiator and Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (P-AC) as a filler, a composite material polyacrylonitrile/Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (PAN/P- AC) was developed. By reacting hydroxylamine with the composite's nitrile groups, the prepared composite was functionalized by amidoximation. FTIR spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis were all applied to thoroughly characterize the fabricated adsorbent. For the treatment of Cr(VI) ions from synthetic solutions, the adsorption properties of amidoximated polyacrylonitrile/Pterocladia capillacea-activated carbon (PAO/P-AC) were investigated. The pH effect, uptake kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamics studies were used to characterize adsorption properties. As a kinetic model analysis, the data confirmed that the pseudo-second-order rate equation matched well the adsorption process. With coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.9998, the Tempkin isotherm model had the lowest error, suggesting that it is the best fitted model to describe this adsorption mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters demonstrated that Cr(VI) adsorption was endothermic.

Utilization of green alga Ulva lactuca for sustainable production of meso-micro porous nano activated carbon for adsorption of Direct Red 23 dye from aquatic environment

        El Nemr Ahmed,Amany GM Shoaib,El Sikaily Amany,Ragab Safaa,Mohamed Alaa El-Deen A.,Hassan Asaad F. 한국탄소학회 2022 Carbon Letters Vol.32 No.1

The production of macroalgae-derived adsorbent is of great importance to realize the idea of treating pollutants with invaluable renewable materials. Herein, a novel meso-micro porous nano-activated carbon was prepared from green alga Ulava lactuca in a facile way via chemical activation with zinc chloride. The resultant activated carbon possesses a significant specific surface area 1486.3 m2/g. The resulting activated carbon was characterized and investigated for the adsorption of Direct Red 23 (DR23) dye from an aqueous environment. Batch method was conducted to study the effects of different adsorption processes on the DR23 dye adsorption from water. Isotherms and kinetics models were investigated for the adsorption process of DR23 dye. It was found that the adsorption data were well fitted by Langmuir model showing a monolayer adsorption capacity 149.26 mg/g. Kinetic experiments revealed that the adsorptions of DR23 dye can be described with pseudo-second-order model showing a good correlation (R2 > 0.997). The prepared activated carbon from Ulava lactuca was exposed to a total of six regeneration experiments. The regeneration result proved that the fabricated activated carbon only loses 19% of its adsorption capacity after six cycles. These results clearly demonstrated the high ability of the obtained active carbon to absorb anionic dyes from the aqueous environment.

      • Immunohistochemical Expression of B Cell Lymphoma-2 with Clinicopathological Correlation in Triple Negative Breast Cancers in Northern Pakistan

Zubair, Muhammad,Hashmi, Shoaib Naiyar,Afzal, Saeed,Muhammad, Iqbal,Din, Hafeez Ud,Ahmed, Rabia Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.7

Background: Triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are high grade aggressive tumors generally with a poor prognosis, not responding to hormonal and anti Her2 Neu therapy. Expression of the antiapoptotic B cell lymphoma 2 gene (Bcl-2) is associated with low grade, slowly proliferating hormone receptor positive tumors with improved survival. Anti Bcl2 agents can be used as alternative targeted therapy in triple negative cancers. Materials and Methods: The objective of this study was to determine the immunohistochemical expression of Bcl2 in triple negative breast cancers and any correlation with clinicopathological variables in Northern Pakistan. Results: All 52 patients were females, aged between 28 and 80 years(average $48.0{\pm}12.1$). 28 cases (53.8%) were positive for Bcl2, this being associated with low grade invasive ductal carcinomas, lymph node metastasis and lymphovascular invasion. Conclusions: Bcl-2 may be an important prognostic factor and its expression might be used for targeted therapy using Anti Bcl2 drugs.

Can parents prevent tooth loss related to dental avulsion? An assessment of knowledge related to permanent teeth

        Sivaramakrishnan Gowri,Abawi Deena,Shoaib Fatima Mohammad,Bucheery Fatema,Salman Ahmed Ali,Kadhem Majeed Jasim,AlSulaiti Fatema,Alsobaiei Muneera,AlSalihi Leena 대한외상학회 2023 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.36 No.1

Purpose: Dental avulsion injuries have a poor prognosis that largely depends on the immediate steps taken to manage the avulsed tooth. A lack of knowledge about the initial management can lead to tooth loss, with further adverse implications for esthetics, phonetics, and overall growth and function. Hence, the present study aimed to assess parents’ knowledge regarding dental avulsion and the variables associated with their knowledge of avulsion injuries. Methods: A series of closed-ended questions on parents’ knowledge regarding avulsion, such as immediate management, storage media, handling, and urgency of visiting the dentist, was asked. Univariate associations between the outcomes were assessed using the Pearson chi-square test. The chi-square goodness-of-fit test was used to check whether the sample data were representative of the population. Results: In total, 211 mothers and 149 fathers were included, of whom 46.7% had experienced dental trauma during their own childhood. Sixty-one percent of mothers believed that they knew everything necessary about tooth avulsion and its management. A significant number of participants who thought that they had a good level of knowledge about avulsion chose water, tissue, or paper wrap to transport the tooth, and preferred tap water, alcohol, or antiseptic to clean the avulsed tooth. Conclusions: Both mothers and fathers had poor knowledge about tooth avulsion, indicating that there is an immediate need for educational programs focusing on this issue. Since a substantial proportion of participants believed incorrect information, it is vital to disseminate accurate information.

Corrosion and wear behavior of TiN PVD coated 304 stainless-steel

        Awais Awan,Riffat Asim Pasha,Muhammad Shoaib Butt,Rizwan Ahmed Malik,Ibrahim M Alarifi,Meshal Alzaid,무하마드 라티프,Ammar Naseer,Mohsin Saleem,Hussein Alrobei 대한기계학회 2020 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.34 No.8

Ti/TiN multilayered physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings were deposited on stainless-steel by cathodic arc deposition method. Bare sample of stainless steel 304 was compared with monolithic TiN coating and TiN coating having 2, 4, 6 and 8 Ti interlayers. The properties like corrosion and wear resistance were studied and analyzed comparatively. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed that highest corrosion resistance was indicated by TiN coating with 8 Ti interlayers. Sample having 8 Ti interlayers have high corrosion potential (E corr ) and low corrosion current density (I corr ) as compared to other samples. This may be attributed to the arrangement of interlayers that prevents the corrosive agents to penetrate surface. All multilayered coatings show better results than the substrate material. Pin on disk wear test revealed that coating having monolithic TiN layer have the lowest coefficient of friction and consequently have less wear volume and wear rate as compared to other coatings with Ti interlayers. These results made the investigated coated stainless steel 304 valuable for wide range of industrial applications that required wear and corrosion resistance.

Resilience Assessment Framework for an Urban Road Network Subjected to Disruptions

Syed Qasim Abbas Kazmi,Syed Ahsan Ali Naqvi,Etikaf Hussain,Shoaib Ahmed 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.12

This research paper introduces a novel framework for assessing the resilience of urban transport networks. Traditional approaches to quantify resilience primarily focus on evaluating resilience based on the accessibility and vulnerability of network links. However, this study proposes a different approach by considering the dynamic role of links within the overall network, including their ability to accommodate additional traffic demand from other links. To accomplish this, a comprehensive scanning network approach is implemented using an iterative traffic assignment performed. The framework is applied to the urban transport network of Karachi, Pakistan. The model incorporates parameters for calibrations derived from volume delay functions, specifically alpha and beta, which are obtained from actual traffic travel times during free-flow and peak hours. The accuracy of the model is validated by comparing observed traffic counts at various locations with the simulated traffic volumes, resulting in an average error of 9% and a standard deviation of 7.4%. The study’s findings reveal significant losses within the network and identify critical links that are particularly susceptible to disruptions. The analysis provides valuable insights into delays experienced by travellers and the additional distances travelled when specific links are closed. Furthermore, the framework enables the evaluation of the overall impacts of disruptions at the network level. The proposed methodology will allow traffic engineers and decision-makers to effectively plan rerouted through alternative links during disruptions.
