Accelerating Palladium Nanowire H<sub>2</sub> Sensors Using Engineered Nanofiltration

<P>The oxygen, O-2, in air interferes with the detection of H-2 by palladium (Pd)-based 11, sensors, including Pd nanowires (NWs), depressing the sensitivity and retarding the response/recovery speed in air relative to N-2 or Ar. Here, we describe the preparation of H-2 sensors in which a nanofiltration layer consisting of a Zn metal organic framework (MOF) is assembled onto Pd NWs. Polyhedron particles of Zn-based zeolite imidazole framework (ZIF-8) were synthesized on lithographically patterned Pd NWs, leading to the creation of ZIF-8/Pd NW bilayered H-2 sensors. The ZIF8 filter has many micropores (0.34 nm for gas diffusion) which allows for the predominant penetration of hydrogen molecules with a kinetic diameter of 0.289 nm, whereas relatively larger gas molecules including oxygen (0.345 nm) and nitrogen (0.364 nm) in air are effectively screened, resulting in superior hydrogen sensing properties. Very importantly, the Pd NWs filtered by ZIF-8 membrane (Pd NW5@ZIF-8) reduced the H-2 response amplitude slightly (Delta R/R-o = 3.5% to 1% of H-2 versus 5.9% for Pd NWs) and showed 20-fold faster recovery (7 s to 1% of H-2) and response (10 s to 1% of H-2) speed compared to that of pristine Pd NWs (164 s for response and 229 s for recovery to 1% of H-2). These outstanding results, which are mainly attributed to the molecular sieving and acceleration effect of ZIF-8 covered on Pd NWs, rank highest in H-2 sensing speed among room -temperature Pd-based H-2 sensors.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The impermeability and moisture damage resistance should be enhanced if railway asphalt mixture (RAM) applied in seasonal frozen area. This paper presents an selection of anti-freeze additives for RAM by conducting highway-based laboratory tests. Five powder alternatives, hydrated lime, fly ash, red clay brick powder, Portland cement and U-type expensive agent (UEA) with different ratio and components, were prepared in terms of concepts with filling, bonding, waterproofing, reinforcing, anti-freezing and self-impermeability. Replacing 50% by weight of mineral filler was proposed in the fabrication of RAM, and the other test conditions were kept in consistence. By experiencing Marshall test, permeability test, indirect tensile test and linear shrinkage test, the results indicated that (i) the bituminous cement made from asphalt binder, mineral filler and different additives can significantly influence the performance of RAM; (ii) A potential combination with hydrated lime (40%), fly ash (20%), red clay brick powder (20%) and Portland cement (20%) can enhance the anti-freeze ability and water damage resistance of RAM; (iii) UEA commonly used in concrete with the concept of self-compaction is not appropriate for being as anti-freeze additive component for RAM.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A clear definition to railway asphalt mixture (RAM) was made. </LI> <LI> Five expected abilities of anti-freeze additive selection for RAM were proposed. </LI> <LI> A combination of four components is recommended for anti-freeze additive. </LI> <LI> UEA is not suitable for being as anti-freeze additives for RAM. </LI> </UL> </P>

Both the calcium and collagen in bone powder are hard to be absorbed by the body. Although enzymatic hydrolysis by protease increased the bio-availability of bone powder, it was a meaningful try to further increase Ca2+ release, oligopeptide formation and antioxidant activity of the sheep bone hydrolysate (SBH) by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation. Lactobacillus helveticus was selected as the starter for its highest protease-producing ability among 5 tested LAB strains. The content of liberated Ca2+ was measured as the responsive value in the response surface methodology (RSM) for optimizing the fermenting parameters. When SBH (adjusted to pH 6.1) supplemented with 1.0% glucose was inoculated 3.0% L. helveticus and incubated for 29.4 h at 36℃, Ca2+ content in the fermented SBH significantly increased (p<0.01), and so did the degree of hydrolysis and the obtaining rate of oligopeptide. The viable counts of L. helveticus reached to 1.1×1010 CFU/mL. Results of Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated that LAB viable counts, Ca2+ levels, obtaining rates of oligopeptide and the yield of polypeptide were positively correlated with each other (p<0.01). The abilities of SBH to scavenge the free radicals of DPPH, OH and ABTS were also markedly enhanced after fermentation. In conclusion, L. helveticus fermentation can further boost the release of free Ca2+ and oligopeptide, enhance the antioxidant ability of SBH. The L. helveticus fermented SBH can be developed as a novel functional dietary supplement product.

Their structures were identified by spectroscopic evidences. In particular, the absolute configurations of side chain of compounds 1 and 2 were determined using computational methods.
