Objective: To evaluate the association of GRIK2 and NLGN1 with autism spectrum disorder in a Chinese population. Methods: We performed spatio-temporal expression analysis of GRIK2 and NLGN1 in the developing prefrontal cortex, and examined the expression of the genes in ASD cases and healthy controls using the GSE38322 data set. Following, we performed a case-control study in a Chinese population. Results: The analysis using the publicly available expression data showed that GRIK2 and NLGN1 may have a role in the development of human brain and contribute to the risk of ASD. Later genetic analysis in the Chinese population showed that the GRIK2 rs6922753 for the T allele, TC genotype and dominant model played a significant protective role in ASD susceptibility (respectively: OR=0.840, p=0.023; OR=0.802, p=0.038; OR=0.791, p=0.020). The NLGN1 rs9855544 for the G allele and GG genotype played a significant protective role in ASD susceptibility (respectively: OR=0.844, p=0.019; OR=0.717, p=0.022). After adjusting p values, the statistical significance was lost (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our results suggested that GRIK2 rs6922753 and NLGN1 rs9855544 might not confer susceptibility to ASD in the Chinese population.

A novel blue-emitting phosphor of Eu2+-doped Ba2MgP4O13 phosphate was prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phosphor was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements and confirmed to be the pure crystalline phase of Ba2MgP4O13. The emission and excitation spectra of the phosphor were studied. The phosphor could be excited by UV light from 220 nm to 400 nm and emitted a blue luminescence peaked at 410 nm, which corresponds to the 4f 65d1→4f 7 transition of Eu2+ ions. The dependence of luminescence intensities of Eu2+-doped Ba2MgP4O13 on the heating temperature and doping concentrations were investigated. The phosphor had an excellent thermal stability to temperature quenching effects. The luminescence decay (lifetimes) of the phosphor is also discussed in order to further investigate its potential applications for white light-emitting diode phosphors pumped by a near-UV chip.

Snake venom cystatin (sv-cystatin) is a member of the cystatin family of cysteine protease inhibitors. To further evaluate the possibility of sv-cystatin in cancer therapy, this study examined the effects of sv-cystatin on the invasion and metastasis of liver cancer cells (MHCC97H) in vitro and in vivo as well as the underlying mechanism. sv-cystatin cDNA was transfected into MHCC97H cells and the anti-invasion and antimetastasis effects of sv-cystatin were determined using migration and matrigel invasion assays and a lung-metastasis mice model. The results suggest that sv-cyst clone (sv-cystatin expression in MHCC97H cells) delayed the invasion and metastasis in vitro and in vivo compared to the parental, mock and si-sv-cyst clone cells (inhibited sv-cystatin expression by siRNA). The decreased activities of cathepsin B, MMP-2 and MMP-9 and EMT change index including higher E-cadherin, lower N-cadherin and decreased Twist activity were observed in the sv-cyst clone, which contributes to the change in invasion and metastasis ability of MHCC97H cells. This study provides evidence that expression of the sv-cystatin gene in MHCC97H cells inhibits tumor cell invasion and metastasis through the reduction of the proteinases activity and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), which might contribute to the anticancer research of the sv-cystatin protein.

The crystal phases were confirmed via X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) measurements together with Rietveld refinements. The morphological and chemical properties of the samples were investigated by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and the specific surface area measurements. The optical absorptions and the band structures of the two double perovskites were discussed based on the on the experimental results and theoretical calculation. The d–d allowed transitions in Ni2 +–O octahedra have great contributions to the narrow band-gap. The Ni2+-containing tungstate perovskites were potential photocatalysts, which are efficient for its photodegradation for methylene blue (MB) under the irradiation of visible light (λ<ce:italic/>> 420nm). The photocatalytic activities were attributed to the special structure properties and multivalent Ni and W ions in the perovskite lattices.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>A</I> 2NiWO6 (<I>A</I> =Ca, Sr) nano-perovskite were prepared via the sol–gel method. </LI> <LI> The crystalline crystal structure was refined. </LI> <LI> The optical absorption and band structure were clarified. </LI> <LI> The photocatalysis activities were discussed on structural properties. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
