The present study investigated the habitats of Korean fir trees (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson) on Mt. Baekwun (Baekwun-san), determined the current distribution, quantified the contribution of biological and nonbiological environmental factors affecting the distribution, derived actual and potential habitats, presented a plan for the establishment of protected areas, applied RCP 8.5 climate change scenario to analyze the effects of climate change on the future distribution of Korean fir trees, and predicted future potential habitats. According to the results of the study, 3,325 Korean fir trees (DBH >= 2.5 cm) inhabited Mt. Baekwun, and their distribution area was approximately 150 ha. Populations of Korean fir trees were confirmed to exist at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and were distributed up to 1,200 m. Based on potential distribution, areas appropriate for habitation by Korean fir trees were analyzed to be 450 ha, three times the current distribution area, with a focus on Sang Peak (Sang-bong), Eokbul Peak (Eokbul-bong), Ddari Peak (Ddari-bong), and Dosol Peak (Dosol-bong). The forest stands near Sang Peak, the main peak, were evaluated as those with the most appropriate potential for the habitation of Korean fir trees, and populations of the trees tended to prefer the northern slope rather than the southern slope. When climate change scenario RCP 8.5 was applied and future potential distribution was analyzed, the habitats were expected to decrease in area to 20 ha by 2050, with a focus on Sang Peak, and areas appropriate for habitation were predicted not to exist by 2080. Judging from such results, as global warming accelerates, the habitats of Korean fir trees are clearly expected to move from lowlands to highlands.
Effect of Dome Curvature on Failure Mode of Type4 Composite Pressure Vessel
Cho, Sung-Min,Kim, Kwang-Seok,Lee, Sun-Kyu,Jung, Geun-Sung,Lee, Seung-Kuk,Lyu, Sung-Ki Korean Society for Precision Engineering 2018 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.19 No.3
In this work, a series of burst tests and structural analyses have been carried out to demonstrate that, in terms of failure mode, Type 4 composite cylinder is saferwith a dome designed according to the isotensoid dome theory. In the test series, three sample vessels were used: (1) designed as guided by the isotensoid dome theory (called iso-dome cylinder); (2) with dome longer compared to uniform-stress design (called prolate cylinder); and (3) with dome wider than uniform-stress design (called oblate cylinder). Structural analyses have been performed using ABAQUS finite element code based on the periodic symmetry to circumferential direction. As a result, the maximum stresses are induced around the bodies of all three cylinders. However, the analyses, with the assumption of possible defect demonstrate that the maximum stresses are induced around the dome knuckles for the prolate and the oblate cylinders. The results of the ambient hydraulic burst tests for the three cylinders, conducted in compliance with KGS AC411-2015, show that the burst initiates from the cylinder body of the iso-dome cylinder and from the dome knuckles of the prolate and the oblate cylinders. Finally, it is recommended that, to comply with DOT CFFC 2007, the dome shape should be designed and fabricated as guided by the isotensoid dome theory.

Acaricidal activities of 63 commecial pesticides against the longhorned tick, H. logicornis were investigated. Twenty-two pesticides (4 cabamates, 5 organophophates, 9 pyrethroids, 1 octopamine receptor agonists, 1 diamides, and 1 unknown) against adults H. logicornis showed >80% mortalities after 72 h of treatment. The residual effect of 22 pesticides was investigated at 1, 2, 3, 7, and 10 day intervals on grass for H. logicornis adults and nymphs. Eight and twenty pesticides in H. logicornis adults and nymphs showed >80% acaricidal activity at 3 days after the treatment, respectively. 7 days after the treatment, H. logicornis adults showed <60% acaricidal activity in all pesticides, but 7 pesticides (benfuracarb, gamma cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, lammda cyhalothrin, fenvalerate, cyantraniliprole, fluxametamide) showed >80% acaricidal activity in nymphs. all pesticides exhibited <60% acaricidal activity after 10 days of treatment both adults and mymphs, except benfuracarb showed 96.7% mortality in H. logicornis nymph.

Ferroelectric properties of Pb-free (Bi,La)4Ti3O12 (BLT) films were optimized on a newly developed MTP cell structure. BLT films were coated on Pt/IrOx/Ir bottom electrode using sol-gel solutions. The composition of the optimized BLT film was about Bi3.25La0.75Ti3.0O12, which was analyzed by ICP-MS method. The switchable polarization obtained in a 100nm-thick BLT film was about 20 uC/cm2 at the 3 V applied voltage, and the optimized BLT film showed little fatigue loss about 10% up to 1×1011 cycles. The imprint properties of the BLT film were also characterized at 25 °C and 90 °C operating temperature after 125 °C data storage. Regardless of operating temperature, switchable polarization of BLT had a sufficiently large margin for device operation up to 10 years.

Ferromagnetic NiFe nanowire arrays were fabricated on porous alumina templates by an electrochemical method. The nanowires were controlled to have different diameter (100, 200 nm) and length (10, 20, 30 ¿m) in order to understand the magnetostatic interactions between nanowires. Through the control of geometry of the arrays, the magnetization direction was shown to change from parallel to perpendicular to wire direction. The anisotropy field of these arrays was measured much higher than 1 kOe, which resulted in excellent microwave properties, particularly for noise suppression properties over 10 GHz.

Background: We recently showed that gintonin, an active ginseng ingredient, exhibits antibrain neurodegenerative disease effects including multiple target mechanisms such as antioxidative stress and antiinflammation via the lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) receptors. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a spinal disease characterized by neurodegenerative changes in motor neurons with subsequent skeletal muscle paralysis and death. However, pathophysiological mechanisms of ALS are still elusive, and therapeutic drugs have not yet been developed. We investigate the putative alleviating effects of gintonin in ALS. Methods: The G93A-SOD1 transgenic mouse ALS model was used. Gintonin (50 or 100 ㎎/㎏/day, p.o.) administration started from week seven. We performed histological analyses, immunoblot assays, and behavioral tests. Results: Gintonin extended mouse survival and relieved motor dysfunctions. Histological analyses of spinal cords revealed that gintonin increased the survival of motor neurons, expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factors, choline acetyltransferase, NeuN, and Nissl bodies compared with the vehicle control. Gintonin attenuated elevated spinal NAD(P) quinone oxidoreductase 1 expression and decreased oxidative stress-related ferritin, ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1-immunoreactive microglia, S100b-immunoreactive astrocyte, and Olig2-immunoreactive oligodendrocytes compared with the control vehicle. Interestingly, we found that the spinal LPA1 receptor level was decreased, whereas gintonin treatment restored decreased LPA1 receptor expression levels in the G93A-SOD1 transgenic mouse, thereby attenuating neurological symptoms and histological deficits. Conclusion: Gintonin-mediated symptomatic improvements of ALS might be associated with the attenuations of neuronal loss and oxidative stress via the spinal LPA1 receptor regulations. The present results suggest that the spinal LPA1 receptor is engaged in ALS, and gintonin may be useful for relieving ALS symptoms.
