• Comparative Dielectric and Ferroelectric Characteristics of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3, CaCu3Ti4O12, and 0.5Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–0.5CaCu3Ti4O12 Electroceramics

        Singh, L.,Yadava, S. S.,Sin, B. C.,Rai, U. S.,Mandal, K. D.,Lee, Y. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of electronic materials Vol.45 No.6

The dielectric and ferroelectric characteristics of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (BNT), CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO), and 0.5Bi(0.5)Na(0.5)TiO(3)-0.5CaCu(3)Ti(4)O(12) (BNT/CCTO) ceramics are compared. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of single phase of all the ceramics after sintering at 950A degrees C for 15 h. Scanning electron microscopy images of the sintered ceramics reveal average grain sizes in the range from 200 nm to 2.5 mu m. Energy-dispersive x-ray mapping and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show the presence of the elements Bi, Na, Ca, Cu, Ti, and O with uniform distribution in the ceramics. BNT/CCTO exhibits high dielectric constant (epsilon (r) similar to 6.9 x 10(4)) compared with BNT (epsilon (r) similar to 0.13 x 10(4)) and CCTO (epsilon (r) similar to 1.68 x 10(4)) ceramics at 1 kHz and 503 K. The high dielectric constant of BNT/CCTO compared with BNT and CCTO is associated with a major contribution from grain boundaries, as confirmed by impedance and modulus analyses. The P-E hysteresis loop of all the ceramics measured at room temperature and 50A degrees C exhibited typical ferroelectric nature. The remanent polarization (P (r)) of BNT (1.58 mu C/cm(2)) and CCTO (0.654 mu C/cm(2)) ceramics are higher than that of BNT/CCTO (0.267 mu C/cm(2)) ceramic.

      • Proteomic analysis of Salmonella pullorum infected liver tissue in chicken

        Urantulkhuur.B,Baatartsogt.O,H. K. Lim,S.W Suh,Y.Y Kim,C.H Lee,P.K. Mandal,K. D. Choil 한국가금학회 2008 한국가금학회 정기총회 및 학술발표회 Vol.25 No.-

Salmonellosis in poultry is a significant health problem which causes substantial economic loss. One of the common causative agents of chicken salmonellosis is Salmonella pullorum (SP). The goal of this work was to characterize and identify gene expression profiles of chicken liver tissue after infected Salmonella pullorum. In particular, this report focuses on identification of the major proteins that could be identified in Salmonella infected liver. Hundred Hy-Line layer chicks of 10 days old were divided into 5 groups of 20 each. A1, A2, A3 group were infected with high dose(3×10⁹cfu/㎖) of S.P orally and A4, A5 group were kept as non-infected control. One chick was taken randomly from each group after 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days and liver was collected. Proteins were separated from 6 days chicks' liver. Two-dimensional electrophoresis was done and mass spectrometry(MS) will identify the protein spots. More than 289 protein spots were detected on silver stained 2DE gels. Three new proteins were found to be expressed in the infected chicken liver. Five proteins were found to have up regulated expression in infected chicken.

Profiling ethanol-targeted transcription factors in human carcinoma cell-derived embryoid bodies

        Mandal, C.,Halder, D.,Chai, J.C.,Lee, Y.S.,Jung, K.H.,Chai, Y.G. Elsevier/North-Holland 2016 Gene Vol.576 No.1

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a collective term that represents fetal abnormalities associated with maternal alcohol consumption. Prenatal alcohol exposure and related anomalies are well characterized, but the molecular mechanism behind this phenomenon is not yet understood. Few insights have been gained from genetic and epigenetic studies of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Our aim was to profile the important molecular regulators of ethanol-related alterations of the genome. For this purpose, we have analyzed the gene expression pattern of human carcinoma cell-derived embryoid bodies in the absence or presence of ethanol. A cDNA microarray analysis was used to profile mRNA expression in embryoid bodies at day 7 with or without ethanol treatment. A total of 493 differentially expressed genes were identified in response to 50mM ethanol exposure. Of these, 111 genes were up-regulated, and 382 were down-regulated. Gene ontology term enrichment analysis revealed that these genes are involved in important biological processes: neurological system processes, cognition, behavior, sensory perception of smell, taste and chemical stimuli and synaptic transmission. Similarly, the enrichment of disease-related genes included relevant categories such as neurological diseases, developmental disorders, skeletal and muscular disorders, and connective tissue disorders. Furthermore, we have identified a group of 26 genes that encode transcription factors. We validated the relative gene expression of several transcription factors using quantitative real time PCR. We hope that our study substantially contributes to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathology of alcohol-mediated anomalies and facilitates further research.

Effect of Varying Levels of Dietary Minerals on Growth and Nutrient Utilization in Lambs

        Sharma, L.C.,Yadav, P.S.,Mandal, A.B.,Sunaria, K.R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2004 Animal Bioscience Vol.17 No.1

Hisardale male lambs (n=24, 4-5 month of age) were maintained on a conventional ration for a month, to equilibrate the body mineral status. Six lambs were sacrificed after one month of feeding; the samples of organs were analyzed to ascertain mineral status. The remaining 18 lambs were divided into 3 groups of 6 each on body weight basis. Three dietary treatments containing 100 ($T_1$), 110 ($T_2$) and 120% ($T_3$) of minerals (Ca, P, S, Zn and Mn) as specified by NRC (1985) were formulated and each treatment was alloted ad libitum to a group for 120 days. Blood and wool samples were collected at monthly intervals. At the end of the experiment a balance trial of 5 days duration was conducted to study the balance of mineral elements. The effective intake of minerals was Ca, 111 and 120, P, 110 and 122; S, 112 and 129; Zn, 112 and 126 and Mn, 109 and 123 percent in $T_2$ and $T_3$, respectively, in comparison to $T_1$ (100). The additional mineral supplementation had no significant effect on dry matter intake. The average daily weight gain was higher (p<0.01) in $T_2$ and $T_3$ than the control ($T_1$). The lambs under treatments $T_2$ (8.72) and $T_3$ (8.47 kg) consumed apparently lesser amount of dry matter per unit gain as compared to $T_1$ (10.81 kg). Significantly higher (p<0.05) dry matter and crude protein digestibility (%) were observed in $T_2$ and $T_3$ than in $T_1$. The mean balances for different elements were Ca, 1.14, 1.68 and 1.67 g; P, 1.70, 1.95 and 2.18 g; S, 0.54, 0.92 and 1.11 g; Zn, 22.56, 25.30 and 28.71 mg; Cu, 7.94, 5.71 and 5.53 mg; Fe, 33.19, 32.94 and 31.03 mg and Mn, 8.24, 14.40 and 16.07 mg/lamb/day. The retention of supplemental minerals increased (p<0.01) while that of Cu decreased (p<0.01) due to supplementation of minerals (Ca, P, S, Zn and Mn). Retention as per cent of intake increased statistically for S and Mn while that of Cu decreased. It can be concluded that supplementation of minerals (Ca, P, S, Zn and Mn) higher than the recommended level improved body weight gain and feed to gain ratio. The retention of minerals increased due to supplementation. Therefore, an additional supplementation of deficient minerals (Ca, P, S, Zn and Mn) by 10% was beneficial for Hisardale male lambs under tropical condition in India.

      • Anti-tumor effect of Euphorbia hirta on Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma in mice

        Kumarappan, CT,Sunderi, S Karpagam Kumara,Jaswanth, A,Lakshmi, S Mohana,Mandal, Subhash C Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Research Center 2007 Oriental pharmacy and experimental medicine Vol.7 No.2

Anti-tumor activity of Euphorbia hirta (50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) has been evaluated against Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC) in Swiss albino mice. Intraperitoneal (i.p) administration of Euphorbia hirta was effective in reducing solid tumor mass development induced by EAC cells. It exhibited significant anti-tumor activity in mice, when used at the dose of 100 mg/kg/day i.p., for 14days. The administration of Euphorbia hirta (100 mg/kg/day i.p.) resulted in an increase (P<0.001) of the life span (59.9%) of ascites tumor bearing mice as compared to the control group. After 14 days, on developed tumor masses, Euphorbia hirta administration brought about significant reduction in tumor volume and it reverse the changes in the hematological parameters, responding to tumor inoculation. The results are indicative of the anti-tumor activity of Euphorbia hirta against EAC induced tumor in a dose dependent manner.

Diversity Assessment of Bachaur Cattle from India: A Draft Breed Still Relevant in Mechanized Era

        Rekha Sharma,A. K. Pandey,S. C. P. Singh,Y. Singh,B. P. Mishra,S. R. Singh,K. G. Mandal,P. K. Singh,G. Singh,S. P. S. Ahlawat 한국유전학회 2007 Genes & Genomics Vol.29 No.3

Genetic diversity of Bachaur cattle- a draft breed of India bordering Nepal, was investigated by utilizing microsatellite markers. Forty seven random animals of the breed were typed with a set of 23 microsatellites proposed by the FAO for the biodiversities studies. All the microsatellites amplified well and exhibited polymorphism. The observed number of alleles (No) per locus varied from 3 (ILSTS011) to 13 (ILSTS034) with the mean number of alleles 6.30 ± 2.16. Our results showed that this draft breed which is still relevant in its breeding tract due to socio-economic conditions possesses sufficient genetic variability as demonstrated by the values for the expected and observed mean heterozygosity (0.694 and 0.534, respectively). Twelve microsa.tellite loci are in Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium and FIS shows higher value (0.228), suggesting heterozygote deficiency in the population. The results reflect the need for a conservation plan for this breed.

Experiences with Some Toxic and Relatively Accessible Heavy Metals on theSurvival and Biomass Production of Amphora costataW. Smith

        S. K. Mandal,T. Ishimaru,B. Jha,D.C. Bhatt,H.V.Joshi 한국조류학회I 2006 ALGAE Vol.21 No.4

Amphora costata W. Smith 1853 is a down thrown diatom species and also known as metal corrosive ship-fouling organism. A. costata was isolated from Alang ship breaking yard, Alang and evaluated the toxicity tolerance and growth responses of the cultures exposed to different doses of toxic and relatively accessible heavy metals, such as Fe, Mn, Cd, Co, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb in the constantly monitored laboratory culture conditions. The strongest toxic effect was observed on A. costata exposed to Cd even at relatively low concentrations as compared to other metals . The following trend of decreasing order of toxicity i.e. Cd>Zn>Ni>Co>Pb>Cu>Fe was observed, when they were exposed to equal concentration and expose time.
