        Fluoroscopically Guided Three-Tube Insertion for the Treatment of Postoperative Gastroesophageal Anastomotic Leakage

        Objective: To retrospectively evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of three-tube insertion for the treatment of postoperative gastroesophageal anastomotic leakage (GEAL). Materials and Methods: From January 2007 to January 2011, 28 cases of postoperative GEAL after an esophagectomy with intrathoracic esophagogastric anastomotic procedures for esophageal and cardiac carcinoma were treated by the insertion of three tubes under fluoroscopic guidance. The three tubes consisted of a drainage tube through the leak, a nasogastric decompression tube, and a nasojejunum feeding tube. The study population consisted of 28 patients (18 males, 10 females) ranging in their ages from 36 to 72 years (mean: 59 years). We evaluated the feasibility of three-tube insertion to facilitate leakage site closure, and the patients’ nutritional benefit by checking their serum albumin levels between pre- and post-enteral feeding via the feeding tube. Results: The three tubes were successfully placed under fluoroscopic guidance in all twenty-eight patients (100%). The procedure times for the three tube insertion ranged from 30 to 70 minutes (mean time: 45 minutes). In 27 of 28 patients (96%), leakage site closure after three-tube insertion was achieved, while it was not attained in one patient who received stent implantation as a substitute. All patients showed good tolerance of the three-tube insertion in the nasal cavity. The mean time needed for leakage treatment was 21 ± 3.5 days. The serum albumin level change was significant, increasing from pre-enteral feeding (2.5 ± 0.40 g/dL) to post-enteral feeding (3.7 ± 0.51 g/dL) via the feeding tube (p < 0.001). The duration of follow-up ranged from 7 to 60 months (mean: 28 months). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the insertion of three tubes under fluoroscopic guidance is safe, and also provides effective relief from postesophagectomy GEAL. Moreover, our findings suggest that three-tube insertion may be used as the primary procedure to treat postoperative GEAL.         Loess record of the evolution history of severe sandstorms in the Tengger Desert during the Last Interglacial Period (MIS5)

        The Shagou loess section recorded the evolution information of severe sandstorms in the Tengger Desert during the Last Interglacial (MIS 5). By analyzing the grain size data of the loess samples using the grain size class-standard deviation, we selected the grain size component between 209 and 550 µm to reconstruct the evolution history of the severe sandstorms in the Tengger Desert during the Last Interglacial. The results indicate that there were at least 12 periods of frequently occurring severe sandstorms in that location over this time period. There were two periods in each of S1SS1 and S1SS2, four periods in S1LL1, three periods in S1LL2 and one in S1LL4. The occurrence frequency and intensity of the severe sandstorms presented a characteristic increase from the early to the late period of the Last Interglacial. Combined with the calcium carbonate results, this evidence suggests that climatic change is closely related to sandstorms. A warm and wet climate could restrict the occurrence of severe sandstorms; conversely, a cold and dry climate easily induces severe sandstorms. Meanwhile, with a warm and dry climate background, the relationship between climatic change and the occurrence of sandstorms is quite complex: severe sandstorms are also able to occur in such a climate. A cold and dry climate, however, does not mean a certainty of severe sandstorms.

        Effects of strain on the optical and magnetic properties of Ce-doped ZnO

        The magnetic and optical properties of Ce-doped ZnO systems have been widely demonstrated, but the effects of different strains of Ce-doped ZnO systems remain unclear. To solve these problems, this study identified the effects of biaxial strain on the electronic structure, absorption spectrum, and magnetic properties of Ce-doped ZnO systems by using a generalized gradient approximation + U (GGA + U) method with plane wave pseudopotential. Under unstrained conditions, the formation energy decreased, the system became stable, and the doping process became easy with the increase in the distances between two Ce atoms. The band gap of the systems with different strains became narrower than that of undoped ZnO without strain, and the absorption spectra showed a red shift. The band gap narrowed, and the red shift became weak with the increase of compressive strain. By contrast, the band gap widened, and the red shift became significant with the increase of tensile strain. The red shift was significant when the tensile strain was 3%. The systems with −1%, 0%, and 1% strains were ferromagnetic. For the first time, the magnetic moment of the system with −1% strain was found to be the largest, and the system showed the greatest beneficial value for diluted magnetic semiconductors. The systems with −3%, −2%, 2%, and 3% strains were non-magnetic, and they had no value for diluted magnetic semiconductors. The ferromagnetism of the system with −1% strain was mainly caused by the hybrid coupling of Ce-4f, Ce-5d, and O-2p orbits. This finding was consistent with Zener's Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida theory. The results can serve as a reference for the design and preparation of new diluted magnetic semiconductors and optical functional materials.

        Effects of exposure to trace pyriproxyfen on the intestinal bacterial diversity and immune signal pathways of silkworm (Bombyx mori) larvae

        Silkworm (Bombyx mori) is a widely used lepidopteran model insect. Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator (IGR) that can be used to control pests such as lepidoptera and diptera, and there is no research about its in fluence on the intestinal bacterial diversity and immune signal pathway of non-target lepidopteran insect larvae. In this study, we treated fifth-instar silkworms with trace pyriproxyfen (10 − 4 mg/L). The results showed that the abundance and diversity of silkworm larvae intestinal flora at the level of phylum, class, order, family and genus were all changed. The function prediction result showed that the functional changes mainly focused on tran scription, amino acid transport and metabolism, carbohydrate transport and metabolism, signal transduction mechanisms, energy production and conversion et al. after exposure to trace pyriproxyfen. Furthermore, qRTPCR results showed that trace pyriproxyfen exposure activated the transcriptions of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) genes regulated by Toll and IMD pathways. This research can lay the foundation for the study on the resistance of lepidopteran insects to pyriproxyfen and other juvenile hormone pesticides.

        Maximum magnetic entropy change modulated toward room temperature in perovskite manganites La0.7−xNdx(Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3

        With Nd3þ doping and Ca2+, Sr2+ modulating in the solegel technique, a series of polycrystalline perovskite samples La0.7-xNdx(Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25) was prepared, their maximum magnetic entropy changes were tuned to room temperature (ΔSH=-1.47 J/kg K at 298 K for La0.45Nd0.25(Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3), an enhancement of the maximum magnetic entropy change (ΔSH=-1.89 J/kg K at 315 K) and its refrigerant capacity (about 45.3 J/kg) had also been obtained under 9 kOe magnetic field variation for La0.55Nd0.15(Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3 contrast to La0.7(Ca,Sr)0.3MnO3.

        Earthquake response analysis of series reactor

        A direct transfer substructure method is presented in this paper for analyzing the dynamic characteristics and the seismic random responses of a series reactor. This method combines the concept of FRF (frequency response function) and the transfer matrix algorithm with the substructure approach. The inner degrees of freedom of each substructure are eliminated in the process of reconstruction and the computation cost is reduced greatly. With the convenient solution procedure, the dynamic characteristics analysis of the structure is valid and efficient. Associated with the pseudo excitation algorithm, the direct transfer substructure method is applied to investigating the seismic random responses of the series reactor. The numerical results demonstrate that the presented method is efficient and practicable in engineering. Finally, a precise time integration method is employed in performing a time-history analysis on the series reactor under El Centro and Taft earthquake waves.

      • Research on Intelligent Power Supply Control Based on Sensor-less Temperature Identification of Electric Submersible Motor

        This paper proposes a sensor-less temperature identification and an intelligent power supply method for Electric Submersible Motor (ESM) in oil wells. With measurements obtained from the proposed identification, a thermodynamics module is established for the temperature and the fault detection. Besides, the relationship between the rotor temperature and the load can be calculated. Then based on different loads, suitable ratios of voltage to frequency in different conditions can be captured. Finally, the control of the ratio enables power supply to match the oil pump output automatically. The experimental results from an ESM (12kW) in lab are shown to validate the proposed method. The whole scheme is effective and reliable and is therefore suitable to reduce the maintenance frequency of oil pumps and the power consumption of oil wells.

        BiFeO3 Thickness Dependence of the Exchange Bias in Polycrystalline BiFeO3/NiFe Bilayers

        A clear exchange bias has been observed at room temperature in a series of BiFeO3(t)/NiFe(3.6nm) bilayers, in which the BiFeO3 layers are single-phase polycrystalline with t varied from 8 nmto 240 nm. With increasing t, both the exchange bias field (HE) and the coercivity (HC) increasesharply and approach maxima when t is about 40 nm, which is close to one half the spin cycloidalmodulation period (64 nm) of the bulk BiFeO3 material. The oscillatory variations of HE and HCwith the BiFeO3 layer thickness suggest that the cycloidal spin structure may exist in polycrystallineBiFeO3 thin films. The angular dependence of the exchange bias exhibits collinear unidirectionaland uniaxial anisotropies in the present BiFeO3/NiFe bilayers.

        Methylation-associated silencing of BASP1 contributes to leukemogenesis in t(8;21) acute myeloid leukemia

        The AML1-ETO fusion protein (A/E), which results from the t(8;21) translocation, is considered to be a leukemiainitiating event. Identifying the mechanisms underlying the oncogenic activity of A/E remains a major challenge. In this study, we identified a specific down-regulation of brain acid-soluble protein 1 (BASP1) in t(8;21) acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A/E recognized AML1-binding sites and recruited DNA methyltransferase 3a (DNMT3a) to the BASP1 promoter sequence, which triggered DNA methylation-mediated silencing of BASP1. Ectopic expression of BASP1 inhibited proliferation and the colony-forming ability of A/E-positive AML cell lines and led to apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. The DNMT inhibitor decitabine up-regulated the expression of BASP1 in A/E-positive AML cell lines. In conclusion, our data suggest that BASP1 silencing via promoter methylation may be involved in A/E-mediated leukemogenesis and that BASP1 targeting may be an actionable therapeutic strategy in t(8;21) AML.
