The influence of single and repeated oral pretreatment of CHUNG-HYUL-DAN(CHD). a widely used Korean traditional herbal medicines prescribed for hypertension and hyperlipidemia, on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a calcium channel blocker, nicardipine after oral administration of nicardipine was investigated in rats. The single pretreatment of CHD significantly increased area under the plasma concentration-time curve(AUC_(0-8h), but did not influence the time to reach the maximum peak plasma concentration(T_(max)), the maximum peak plasma concentration(C_(max)), terminal elimination half-life(t_(1/2) or the elimination rate constant(λ) for nicardipine. And, C_(max) and AUC_(0-8h) for nicardipine were significantly increased by with 1-week repeated pretreatment with CHD, but the other parameters were not significantly different from those of control. Also, the extent of the lowering effect of nicardipine on blood pressure in rats was significantly increased after oral administration of nicardipine with single and repeated oral pretreatment with CHD. These results indicated that single and 1-week repeated oral pretreatment with CHD should inhibit the metabolism of nicardipine in rats.

Distribution of Cortical Bone in Bovine Limbs
CHOI, Sung-Jin,LEE, Jong-Il,KIM, Nam-Soo,CHOI, In-Hyuk Japanese Society of Veterinary Science 2006 The Journal of veterinary medical science Vol.68 No.9
<P>Xenogenic bone grafts have been widely researched because they are not limited in terms of volume and size like autogenous and allogenic grafts, and the favored bone for xenografts is bovine bone. However, the efficacy of cortical bone from bovine limb for xenografts is not clearly known. In this study, the distribution of cortical bone in bovine humerus, radius, femur, and tibia were investigated. Each experimental bone was split longitudinally with a bone saw and bone marrow and cancellous bone were removed. The thicknesses of cortical layers in sample diaphyses were measured at 1cm intervals using a micrometer. The mean lengths of cortical portions were; humerus 14.7 ± 2.3 cm, radius 19.0 ± 2.6 cm, femur 19.0 ± 3.2 cm, and tibia 23.0 ± 3.1 cm. Thickest cortical bone was found at the distal caudal metaphysis of the humerus, the proximal caudal metaphysis of the radius, the craniolateral and caudomedial midshaft of the femur and the lateral and medial midshaft of tibia. The mean surface areas of cortical bone were humerus 187.4 ± 15.44 cm2, radius 229.2 ± 43.31 cm2, femur 295.8 ± 8.93 cm2, and tibia 290.0 ± 30.44 cm2. And, mean volumes of cortical bone were humerus 149.42 ± 15.35 cm3, radius 166.26 ± 20.02 cm3, in femur 220.45 ± 22.73 cm3, and tibia 214.89 ± 20.05 cm3. The results of this study can be used to produce cortical bone-based plates and screws.</P>

<P><B>OBJECTIVE</B></P><P>Various cutoff levels of hemoglobin A1c (A1C) have been suggested to screen for diabetes, although more consensus about the best level, especially for different ethnicities, is required. We evaluated the usefulness of A1C levels when screening for undiagnosed diabetes and as a predictor of 6-year incident diabetes in a prospective, population-based cohort study.</P><P><B>RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS</B></P><P>A total 10,038 participants were recruited from the Ansung-Ansan cohort study. All subjects underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at baseline and at each biennial follow-up. Excluding subjects with a previous history of diabetes (<I>n</I> = 572), the receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of the A1C cutoff. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to predict diabetes at 6 years.</P><P><B>RESULTS</B></P><P>At baseline, 635 participants (6.8%) had previously undiagnosed diabetes. An A1C cutoff of 5.9% produced the highest sum of sensitivity (68%) and specificity (91%). At 6 years, 895 (10.2%) subjects had developed incident diabetes. An A1C cutoff of 5.6% had the highest sum of sensitivity (59%) and specificity (77%) for the identification of subsequent 6-year incident diabetes. After multivariate adjustment, men with baseline A1C ≥5.6% had a 2.4-fold increased risk and women had a 3.1-fold increased risk of new-onset diabetes.</P><P><B>CONCLUSIONS</B></P><P>A1C is an effective and convenient method for diabetes screening. An A1C cutoff of 5.9% may identify subjects with undiagnosed diabetes. Individuals with A1C ≥5.6% have an increased risk for future diabetes.</P>

<P>Bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) family proteins are representative epigenetic modulators that read acetylated lysine residues and transfer cellular signals. Recently, the BET protein inhibitor JQ1 was developed and has been extensively studied in many cancer cell types. We demonstrated that JQ1 effectively suppressed the MYC-AP4 axis and induced antitumorigenic effects by targeting a bidirectional positive loop between MYC and AP4 which was first proposed in the present study. MYC and AP4 are the direct targets of BRD4, as demonstrated by chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay and BRD4 loss-of-function experiments. Although inhibition of the MYC/MAC dimer suppressed AP4, the efficacy of suppression was not as effective as BRD4 inhibition. Notably, AP4 loss-of-function studies demonstrated that AP4 is a major critical target of JQ1 and that MYC is a novel downstream target of AP4, as demonstrated by AP4 binding to the MYC promoter. Taken together, our results suggest that the epigenetic reader BRD4 is a key mediator of the activated MYC-AP4 axis, which supports the possibility that targeting BET protein is a novel therapeutic strategy for MYC-AP4 axis-activated cancers.</P>

A directly heated $SO_3$ decomposer for the sulfur-iodine and hybrid-sulfur processes has been introduced and analyzed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code CFX 11. The use of a directly heated decomposition reactor in conjunction with a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) allows for higher decomposition reactor operating temperatures. However, the high temperatures and strongly corrosive operating conditions associated with $SO_3$ decomposition present challenges for the structural materials of decomposition reactors. In order to resolve these problems, we have designed a directly heated $SO_3$ decomposer using RA330 alloy as a structural material and have performed a CFD analysis of the design based on the finite rate chemistry model. The CFD results show the maximum temperature of the structural material could be maintained sufficiently below 1073 K, which is considered the target temperature for RA 330. The CFD simulations also indicated good performance in terms of $SO_3$ decomposition for the design parameters of the present study.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effects of intensity and timing of disturbances on recovery of marine benthic organisms were investigated on a rocky intertidal shore in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. We hypothesized that the recovery pattern of the benthic community structure would be affected by disturbance intensity and season. Twenty‐eight permanent plots were set up, with disturbance intensity (cleared plots and sterile plots) and seasonal disturbance (fall 1999 and spring 2000) incorporated into the experimental design. To monitor natural seasonal variation in benthic community abundances, we established seven permanent unmanipulated plots. Turf‐forming algae were observed in the unmanipulated plots throughout the experimental period, whereas green algae and invertebrate presence varied with season. In the disturbance‐intensity experiment, turf‐forming and green algae were dominant in cleared plots. The highest coverage of sessile organisms was observed in sterile plots, which exhibited the highest species richness because of their relatively low macroalgal coverage. Seasonal effects of disturbance were an important factor in the recovery pattern of benthic organisms under high disturbance intensity. Coverage of green algae was higher in sterile spring plots than in sterile fall plots; this result was attributed to low spatial competition, as the disturbances occurred just before green algal blooms. On the other hand, the abundances of barnacles and bivalves were highest on sterile fall plots, as these organisms were suppressed by green algal blooms in other periods. These results indicate that the effects of disturbance intensity on benthic community recovery patterns can be influenced by season of disturbance.</P>
Total hip replacement in a dog
Nam-Soo Kim,Md.Rafiqul Alam,In-Seong Jeong,Jong-Il Lee,In-Hyuk Choi 대한수의학회 2005 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.6 No.2
An intact male German shepherd dog (4 y, body wt. 35.5 kg) was referred to the Animal Medical Center, Chonbuk National University with severe lameness, pain and gait abnormality on the right hind limb. Survey radiographs of the pelvis revealed dysplasia of the right coxofemoral joint with subluxation. The dog was surgically treated performing total hip replacement (THR) using Modular Biolox Canine Modular THR System. The dog began to bear weight and slowly returned to a normal exercise pattern 2 months after surgery. THR resulted in satisfactory clinical functions with 6 months follow up and no complications were observed. Canine modular THR could be a successful modality for the management of disabling conditions of the coxofemoral joint.
